Im really tired of the fake enlightenment amongst people I know pushing toxic positivity online. Like, Ive been very open that a decade ago I had what can be scientifically described using Zen Buddhist language as a satori a literal Moment of Nirvana via a subjective mystical experience built off regimented studying, regular meditation, and minor chemical alterations for the sake of legitimate personal change of mind and behaviors. In the time since I have shared online plenty of quotes and stuff on spirituality, philosophy, politics, etc usually with a positive or optimistic perspective, but not always given history can be a bummer at times (to say the least).
What fundamentally bothers me about this fakeness is that the entire point of all forms of enlightenment, mystical experiences, profound realizations, etc is noting that its not special in terms of uniqueness. Everyone can do it in one form or another. Youre not a superior being just because you, maybe, shed a layer of your ego. In fact, that mentality is just reinforcing the very egotistical behavior one thinks theyre getting rid of. What we have inside of us in terms of esotericism and psychological aspects of ego can, and arguably should, be dying-renewing regularly across ones life time. This can be positive, self induced ego death; or it can be a product of circumstances that press upon you to rise up or fall down. And even after falling theres the whole cliche Phoenix phenomenon that sees people rise out of the ashes of their deepest despair.
My point here is, is that this fake enlightenment is not just obvious grifter behavior and convincing people of a lot of wrong ideas about themselves subjectively as well as the objective world around them; it just is frankly a perversion of the millennia old traditions of spirituality that go so far back in history that we arguably see other hominids like Neanderthals have forms of it. To fake oneself into a notion of enlightenment is an evolutionary dead end. Its like thinking an expression of a gene trait is the peak of evolution and thus one must never change by clinging to it as their entire identity. Its bad, wrong, and dumb.

Has to be king. Non negotiable.

In the market for something nice, but not like, bank breaking. I know they're supremely expensive and what I'm getting in to.

What are some good brands in the like, lower parts of the upper tiers? I see obviously Sleep Number advertised everywhere, are they actually good or do they just flood the market with ads? Any other sleeper companies I should look into?

Can be memory foam. I don't really know what else there is these days in terms of what the actual mattress is made of.

I think they're modifying it due to concerns that the next mutation might totally escape the current vaccine

I went to a brewery a while ago where they give you a wristband. All the taps were self service. You scan your wristband at the one you want, then pour as much as you want and it racks up the amount based on how much is flowing. So you can make yourself a bunch of flights and whatnot, sample accordingly, etc.

It's a cool concept, but when you think about how you're playing for the samples and also the first second or so of foam that bartenders usually let go down the drain, it's pretty wack. I did only get one beer because I didn't have much time, but it was about standard for a craft brewery draft, like $5.

BUT. You don't have to tip. So depending on how much you drink, you'd actually come out ahead since you wouldn't need to add on the commensurate 20% or whatever.

https://www.npr.org/2022/07/15/1111648759/covid-19-coronavirus-omicron-variant-ba5-cdc-vaccines-masks-mayo-clinic

The BA.5 omicron subvariant, which is now the most prevalent coronavirus strain in the United States, is four times more resistant to COVID-19 vaccines, according to a new study.

The strain, which is considered "hypercontagious," according to the Mayo Clinic, is more defiant against messenger RNA vaccines, which include Pfizer and Moderna.

The BA.5 strain represented 65% of cases from July 3 to 9, according to data from the Centers of Disease Control and Prevention.

It is contributing to increases in COVID-19 hospitalizations and admissions to intensive care units across the country.

But vaccines still provide much better protection than going without the safeguards.

Unvaccinated people have about a five times higher chance of contracting the virus than those who are vaccinated and boosted, while chances of hospitalization are 7.5 times higher, and chances of death are 14 to 15 times higher, said Dr. Gregory Poland, head of the Mayo Clinic's Vaccine Research Group.

"Let me make a clear, clear point here that's a little tough to hear: Whether you've been vaccinated, whether you've been previously infected, whether you've been previously infected and vaccinated, you have very little protection against BA.5 in terms of getting infected or having mild to moderate infection," he said. "You have good protection against dying, being hospitalized or ending up on a ventilator."

The CDC still recommends getting tested if you experience COVID-19 symptoms, and wearing masks depending on the number of cases where you live.

The more contagious omicron variant was first detected in the U.S. in December 2021.

As the BA.5 strain becomes more popular, incidences of the BA.1, BA 1.1 and BA.2 omicron subvariants have declined.

Bro we all know they offered you a big fat check. You can drop the charade.

A guy at my old company had worked there like two decades ago and left, then about five years ago came back. He was saying the job he had prior to coming back had him living at a florida beachhouse driving a convertible, and he said he "gave it all up because (colleague of his) called him up and wanted him to come join the company and how we're driving towards something great here and how much he loves the challenge of building something"

again, bro just say we offered you more. nobody in your old situation would've moved here for, and i'm quoting, "the challenge of building something great."

80/80

I have a Nespresso Pixie model, pretty small and basic.

You press button A to turn it on, then you can press button B or C depending on if you want Lungo or not.

Prior to today, I would press button A to boot up the machine. Buttons B and C would flash on and off indicating the machine was warming up. Once they became solid white, they were ready.

Well, today, I learned that I can press button A to start warming up the machine, and then I could IMMEDIATELY press B or C to queue up the espresso. So once the machine was ready, it would automatically start the cycle of B or C.

It's great. Previously I would press the power button and stand there for ~30 seconds while it warmed up because 30 seconds wasn't really enough time to go do anything and come back. Now, I press both buttons, and then go log into my work computer and set myself to online (and join the 9am if I have one).

The more you know.

TopicThese 14 states had significant miscounts in the 2020 census
TaylorHeinicke
05/19/22 12:15:36 PM

https://www.npr.org/2022/05/19/1099810793/census-undercount-by-state-arkansas-florida-illinois-mississippi-tennessee-texas

For the 2020 census, all states were not counted equally well for population numbers used to allocate political representation and federal funding over the next decade, according to a U.S. Census Bureau report released Thursday.

A follow-up survey the bureau conducted to measure the national tally's accuracy found significant net undercount rates in six states: Arkansas (5.04%), Florida (3.48%), Illinois (1.97%), Mississippi (4.11%), Tennessee (4.78%) and Texas (1.92%).

It also uncovered significant net overcount rates in eight states Delaware (5.45%), Hawaii (6.79%), Massachusetts (2.24%), Minnesota (3.84%), New York (3.44%), Ohio (1.49%), Rhode Island (5.05%) and Utah (2.59%).

For the other 36 states, as well as Washington, D.C., the bureau did not find statistically significant net over- or undercount rates.

These revelations come after the population totals from a census beset by the coronavirus pandemic and years of interference from former President Donald Trump's administration have already been used to divvy up seats in the House of Representatives, as well as votes in the Electoral College, for the next decade.

During a press briefing on Wednesday, bureau officials emphasized the follow-up survey's estimates, which were delayed largely because of the pandemic, will not change each state's share of representation in the House or the Electoral College.

The Supreme Court ruled in 1999 that statistical sampling, which would be needed to factor in the states' over- and undercount rates, cannot be used to produce the census data for reapportioning Congress.

Last year, the House clerk certified each state's new share of House seats based on the 2020 population tallies.

The bureau, however, does plan to use these estimates from its Post-Enumeration Survey in planning for the 2030 census that is already underway.

"It's a monumental task to count everybody. And this helps us inform how well we do," said Timothy Kennel, assistant division chief for statistical methods, during the briefing.

The bureau has been under pressure to release more quality metrics

Kennel, who led the follow-up survey's design, said that the new results were "in line with past censuses" that had over- and undercounts among various states.

Still, the 2020 results stand in stark contrast to the findings from the bureau's follow-up survey for the 2010 census, which had no statistically significant over- or undercounts for any state.

Concerned about the impact of COVID-19 and interference by Trump administration officials, many state and local officials, civil rights groups and other census stakeholders have been pressing for more quality metrics from the bureau.

Past counts have shown that census participation and the quality of the final numbers can vary greatly between neighborhoods and demographic groups.

In March, the bureau released follow-up survey findings that showed significant national net undercount rates for Black people and Latinos, as well as Native Americans living on reservations.

The bureau also found significant national net overcount rates for white people who do not identify as Hispanic and Asian Americans.

The statistical agency, however, is not expected to release state-level over- or undercount rates by race and ethnicity or any rates for counties, cities or towns.

"We are interested in producing the highest quality estimates that people can rely on and trust. And we have to meet our standards, and we can't really say anything below the state level," Kennel said, noting that the bureau's plans for the 2020 count did not include producing more detailed metrics as it had in the past.

To try to ameliorate the effects of the over- and undercounts, the bureau has set up an internal team that plans to research how to factor the follow-up survey's results into the bureau's population estimates, which, along with census data, help guide the distribution of an estimated $1.5 trillion a year in federal money to local communities.

This is a bit of an unintended fallout from the block feature.

Take, for example, the user who blocks everyone who disagrees with them. This user spends loads of time trying to convince other users that this user's viewpoint is correct. On any subject, be it politics, covid, video games, or whatever. We'll call this user A.

User A spends time making posts designed to change the minds of users who disagree with user A. These posts consist of statistics and anecdotes. Other users occasionally respond, we'll use User B as an example, who responds in kind to user A.

Ultimately, user A is frustrated, and due to the quick-trigger nature of the mind of the echo chamber living user, hammers the block feature on user B in order to expand user A's safe space. At this point, user B can no longer see user A's posts.

Here's what doesn't make sense; if I, user A, still want to fight my battles, why would I want to prevent user B from still at least seeing my posts? Sure, user A's initial interaction was ultimately unsuccessful in swaying user B, but perhaps B just needed more convincing. It's not out of the ordinary for one to change his or her mind, after all.

So if I'm user A, why am I using the block feature rather than the ignore feature? I still accomplish my goal of expanding my safe space by no longer seeing user B's posts. However, user B is no longer able to see my posts, thus inadvertently accomplishing the exact same thing for user B. If I, user A, am trying to spread my knowledge, then why would I deliberately want to prevent those very people I'm trying to sway from seeing my knowledge at all?

Food for thought.
