I notice a lot of people expressing surprise, or describing surprise others felt, about Jordan Peele's switch from a comedy sketch guy to a horror director, but there were a surprising number of really creepy horror sketches on that show that in retrospect Peele obviously directed - they were funny but also really well made, so when he made an actual horror film I knew right away I had to see it

I am a little more 'amnesia again?' when it comes to it applying to other characters vs the main character (which is almost always to serve some sort of mechanical function that has a purpose), but even then it often leads to pretty fun mysteries.

I'm actually one of the people who voted for the "Villain hellbent on world domaination" option. Most of these don't really seem that bad to me -

Amnesia - Honestly, this is a really useful cliche. I get that it feels overused but it has a really strong purpose in games specifically - to put the player character and the player on the same level of information so that you can grow at the same rate as they do. It might be a bit of an eyerollingly overused cliche, but it really does work when deployed well and there are some games that could barely function without it.

Character who joins, leaves, joins, leaves, and joins your party again - Nah I think these are fun. Feels like a very specifically jrpg-oriented cliche (about half of these do).

Choices that don't matter - An overrated boogeyman, in my opinion. This can be frustrating in games where it seems like a choice SHOULD matter but ends up at the same point anyway, but in a lot of instances I don't really want wildly branching choices as much as people seem to anyway. I get particularly annoyed by the sort of player who seems to expect every game has like 30 different endings personally tailored to your exact set of circumstances - it just doesn't bother me when games only have one or two endings and the choices are just the journey along the way (see: Life is Strange).

Dead character gets resurrected - Is this a gaming cliche? I can't even name an instance of this happening off the top of my head and it wouldn't necessarily be annoying if it did.

"Let's split up, even though it's smarter to stick together!" - This also doesn't seem like a cliche to me but I think splitting up character rosters is fun because it means you get to see different interactions than you would normally and it incentivizes you to use characters you wouldn't normally.

Power of Friendship - This was my runner up choice, I do think it's kind of a dull cliche especially in jrpgs. But at least it's kind of sweet and positive and mostly harmless at the end of the day - it's nice to emphasize the power of friendship!

Silent Protagonist - It's bad in some games but it's good in others. This is just a style choice that isn't inherently good or bad in my opinion. It can be a perfectly fine choice in games where the storytelling is more about building the world around the character (external) than it is about building the character you're playing (internal) - Zelda and Chrono Trigger are examples of games where the silent protagonist works (although I can imagine a CT where Crono talks that works just fine - can't say the same for most Zelda games).

Unstoppable Hero until there's a cutscene - Sort of a bad, lazy writing cliche but I get why it happens. I do think writers should try their hardest to intergrate scenes around a boss fight such that beating the boss feels like it actually matters vs the boss getting the upper hand at the end anyway (but you still need to win the fight) but it doesn't bother me that desperately.

Villains hellbent on world domination, on the other hand, absolutely are overused in my opinion, unless it's played for comedy/camp - everyone loves a good Dr. Wily or Dr. Robotnik. But I get really sick of games, especially jrpgs, where the stakes are comedically high to the point that you're fighting for the fate of the universe against some kind of unrealistically malevolent bad guy. This cliche bothers me more when it's a villain hellbent on *destroying* the world, but still, world-level scope is just way overused and I'm just not really a big fan of black-and-white good vs evil stories.

Like how Magus goes from having 6666 HP as a boss, then has HP in the hundreds when he joins you? Yeah, this one drives me nuts.

I can't even imagine being bothered by this one, this is just the realities of the game's combat system. The compromises would either be that the Magus boss fight is weak and lame, or Magus is so overpowered that it renders the game trivial.

no, the scenes aren't cringey. yes, mcgregar plays the character really well. but those things don't make the scenes good. even as a kid, i thought the obi-wan stuff was mostly boring.

I don't think they're soulful, but I do grant that they're unique in a way that only the PT can ever really deliver

Yeah I mean I think I could agree with the notion that PT sells it dialog in a much hammier, almost shakespearian (badly) sort of way, whereas ST tries to go for a more natural sort of vibe (big scare quotes around that of course, nobody in movies talk how people in real life do), which could definitely lead to the PT lines being more memorable/memeable

I have a hard time starting new games because of the increased attention span I need to divert into enveloping myself in the new game's world and language - it's stressful because it really feels like I need to focus on it 100% until I've gotten used to the game

Eh, I wouldn't be surprised if the latter happens when kids who watched the sequels have nostalgia for them when they get older. The sequels have meme-worthy lines out there ("MORE!" "Every single word in that sentence was wrong," among others).

also I'm glad someone could think of ST memes because I was struggling to think of them but I know they exist (haven't seen the movies in a while)

We have meme culture now, but there aren't really any memes based on ST lines. Either the PT dialogue was different in some way or we're gonna see a ton of ST memes after the kids who grew up on them take over internet culture. I think it's the former.

I mostly feel like this is a matter of right time, right place, though. People just weren't receptive to the ST in the same way, for some reasons in its control, and for some reasons not in its control (i.e. happening in the late 10's instead of the early 00's)

I think it comes from Lucas' theatrical dialog. The original Star Wars is one of the most frequently quoted movies in pop culture because so many of the lines are just silly, and the prequels retain that, which is why they're so ripe for memes. I can quote a bunch of lines from the prequels off the top of my head - "A surprise to be sure, but a welcome one," "Now THIS is podracing," "I don't think the system works," "I don't like sand," "Not just the men, but the women and the children," "Hello there/General Kenobi!" the entire Darth Plagueis speech, "It's treason, then," (basically ANYTHING said by Palpatine in all 3 movies, in fact,) but the Disney movies? I can only remember a few lines that are just incredibly bad. A lot of the quotable lines from the prequels are bad but funny, but the sequel lines I can think of are just bad. "You were always scum." "Rebel scum?" is one of the worst one-liners I've ever seen in a completed movie - the only impression it leaves is that the writers couldn't think of anything better.

This sounds like historical revisionism to me. The only reason these lines are memorable is because there's been a huge meme culture rising up to make them memorable - I wouldn't have remembered any of this shit immediately after watching the movie (aside from the Palpatine stuff, agreed that that is all instantly memorable but that's because Ian McDiarmid puts in a goddamn oscar-worthy performance). At the time the movies came out the only line everyone was really quoting was NOOOOOOOOOOO

The only thing about 7 that strikes me as eye-rollingly similar to 4 is Starkiller Base and blowing up planets - that one I agree feels like a weird rerun of ANH, but nothing about the rest of the movie really strikes me as especially similar outside of some superficial details (like yeah, they clearly wanted to recreate the cantina scene, but it happens at a different time in the movie and serves a different purpose)

I've seen this desperately gatekeepy argument made before but I don't understand the premise - 7/8/9 feel "more like Star Wars" to me than 1/2/3 do, I've really never bought into the PT's vision of what Star Wars is like at all

There's definitely modern country that's still good but the godawful redneck dudebro country seems to take up a lot of oxygen and is sort of increasingly entrenched in a gross culture war. There's country that's not like that though
