I actually think the memes hurt it way more than helped - led people to believe that it's a game that isn't worth experiencing outside of youtube clips. Thats the thing though, if it maintained the tone they showed off in marketing all the way through, it really would be worth it only for the memes (and gameplay). The shift in tone is the payoff, and the real twist. But unlike the obvious twist, it doesnt seem like people see that coming until they play it.
