The book Brave New World addressed this, where they mention technology is advanced enough that nobody needs to work, but people would be miserable with that much free time and no purpose, so they create assembly line jobs. Its not BS, not having to work sounds great but it would probably lead to skyrocketing drug addiction and depression.
