But relative to Watergate, which erupted over a simple "uh hum," today is significant.

I wouldn't expect impeachment proceedings to begin immediately following the testimony (although House Democrat Al Green has promised that he's drafting up the papers now).

Tempered expectations: Comey's testimony may prompt the Senate Intelligence Committee to call upon Jeff Sessions (and others) to testify about their communications with Comey.

I'm personally not a fan of pop music being grafted onto video games, film and television, but at least they made an attempt to integrate this one with the traditional FF arpeggio.

Ho man, the original score for FFXV is amazing though. The only thing holding it back from being the indisputable best of the series is a weak main villain theme, imo.

What does this mean? I've seen Seinfeld before but didn't know about his distaste for hugs.

The show is a critique on social convention. The Seinfeldian ethos asks, "why should I lift a finger or make myself even slightly uncomfortable for the sake of a stranger?" Life is too short. Seinfeld is pretty much the antithesis of the Parable of the Good Samaritan.

But when that story came out about him trying to blend in with the curtains (and when I saw the video of him awkwardly peeling himself off of the wall) I gained a new level of admiration for him. You know, Octillery... I think I might have to agree with you on this. Normally I'm very pro-leak; I think Snowden is a hero, for example. But this NSA doc deals with some seriously dangerous, destabilizing stuff.

It's one thing if most of the population (myself included) believes that our President is mentally unfit to serve, is surrounded by treasonous advisers and may have participated in treason himself. Even if Trump tries to dismantle the institutions designed to keep him in check, even if the hyper-partisan Congress drags their feet, I still believe in our democracy because I know that the 2018 and 2020 elections provide a legitimate opportunity to undo the damage that's been done.

However, once you cast doubt on the legitimacy of the vote count itself... then we have a very big problem. This particular leak doesn't go quite that far but it tiptoes right up to the line. Once we step over that line, when people say "not my president" they might literally mean it. If the NSA is holding onto something more, it might be best if they hold onto it a little longer, until there is a process in place to re-legitimize and stabilize our government.

I assume you're talking about Louis CK's coffee barista joke? If so, the difference is that Louis CK's joke is much easier to parse. He spends maybe 30 seconds painting a picture of this hard-working dude before throwing out the n-word as a shocking synonym for "hard-working."

Maher's joke only has a one-sentence setup and it seems that it flew right over a lot of critics' heads. Maher is mocking the n-word in his joke but it requires more thought to parse out the meaning and Maher provides less space for the audience to do so.

-When a Guardian Shield pops off, you know that shit is about to go down. This ability heralds the beginning of a huge battle.

I haven’t crunched the numbers on this, and let me be clear, I am a fan of crunching the numbers when it comes to matters of inclusion and diversity (or the lack of it that is still the hallmark of too many segments of the TV industry).
...
So, given my penchant for numbers, charts and data when it comes to these issues, I am fully aware that one anecdotal list does not prove anything definitively. Lots of shows get canceled every year, especially in spring and early summer, when the networks are clearing the decks for their next few rounds of acquisitions. If someone wanted to make a counter-argument, they most certainly could do so by mentioning that “Last Man Standing” and “The Odd Couple,” two shows with white male leads, were also canceled in recent weeks. WGN America didn’t just cancel “Underground,” it also canceled the predominantly white “Outsiders.”

The article is leading but also thoroughly acknowledges its speculative nature. The author asks a valid question, given the history of the industry. Unfortunately, she doesn't provide a substantive answer. But she raises an issue worthy of investigation and discussion.

Aren't most Zelda games like that? The plot in each game reiterates time and time again that Ganon is about to destroy Hyrule (especially near the end), and yet there's nothing stopping you from taking your sweet ass time to fish or take pictures or derp around.

I think that BotW is noticeably more hands-off (btw, for me that's not a flaw). At the other extreme end you have Majora's Mask, which feels like it's constantly breathing down your back. You have infinite time to explore the world of Termina too, but it doesn't feel like it.

BotW doesn't really place much pressure on the player and the tone is extremely laid-back. Other Zelda games fall on a spectrum between BotW and MM.

My problem with the Borg Queen is twofold:
-She's antithetical to the concept of the Collective
-She's got too much human personality (lacks the cold, efficient, uncaring, Terminator-esque demeanor)

The Borg were terrifying at first because they didn't stop to have a conversation with anyone. When Picard tries diplomacy the first time in the TV series, the Borg just start talking over him like he's nothing, and then start carving up the ship. When Locutus is trotted out as a mouthpiece for the Borg, it's chilling because he doesn't behave like the Borg Queen; it's just Picard's body with the mechanical voice of the Collective.

Where were they supposed to go with it, you ask? They ought to have kept Borg appearances rare and used them sparingly (i.e. not run them into the ground like they did in Voyager). They should have shown restraint. When you overexpose the monster, it loses its mystique and is no longer terrifying.

I feel like all of the TNG movies dropped the ball, tbh. They killed off characters without really earning it and without much reason. First Contact is by far the best of them, but the Borg Queen almost ruins the Borg for me.

I dunno... they're still enjoyable, but I feel that there are dozens of TV episodes that are better than the movies. First Contact is really the only film I'd rank among my favorite TNG stories, mainly because everything other than the Borg Queen is actually pretty excellent.

Most entertainment is pandering, to a degree. Most movies, games and comic books are inherently gratuitous and indulgent.

Where racial/etc pandering crosses a line for me is when it's highlighted in a conspicuous way that doesn't serve any greater purpose... Or alternatively, when the character is written with a style and register which are a clear mismatch (i.e. it's obvious that someone behind the scenes, with zero knowledge of a certain culture, is shoehorning a poor representation of said culture into the work in question).
