If we're talking about putting years at their strongest and allowing consoles, why not allow rereleases? Don't see why we can't allow, say, 1999 to have Pokemon Yellow since it is a distinct game from Red/Blue.

1999 with Pokemon Yellow as its lead and Final Fantasy VIII + Smash Bros backup could seriously threaten 1997 imo.

Sure, but I'm trying to examine this within the rule constraints that SBAllen gave us at the start of the contest. It was pretty clear that re-releases (apart from full-fledged remakes like, well, REMake) would not be allowed, while consoles would be. Consoles were mentioned with enough frequency that people logically assumed they'd be a big part of this contest. They were almost invisible.

or 06 getting the wii/ps3, or 1989 getting its trifecta

the console argument has been the worst argument this contest.

Why are you lumping it under one umbrella "argument"? There aren't many entrants in this contest; it's easy to examine them individually.

The NES was a huge deal in 1985 (though not big enough to reverse a tripling).
The SNES was a huge deal in 91.
The N64 was a huge deal in 96.

Apart from the Wii (which hasn't aged well), I'm not sure if there are any consoles that were that hyped in their launch year. I think the voters would have recognized that, which is why I feel the SNES is a much bigger deal for 91 than the PS1 would have been for 95.

True, and I think that definitely extends to the PS1. Sony consoles need a year to get cooking. Nintendo consoles have almost always released with a killer app and immediate hype.

85 was tripled, there was no saving that year
95 gets PS1 = 01 getting three systems that were a bigger deal in 01 than the PS1 was in 95
96 gets N64 = 00 actually getting its four best games. I think that easily swings it, especially since at that point, 96 would be tripling down on Nintendo appeal while facing really popular Zelda and Pokemon games

If we give each year their absolute best pictures within the format, I don't think any of those results above would flip. But I think 91/94 might have, certainly with a higher likelihood than the matches above.

It's not nearly as good as New York's, but the bus system is serviceable. Also, you CAN still own a car no matter where you're living in L.A. I've heard that owning a car in the heart of NYC is extremely difficult and expensive.

I've only been to NYC once (when my family first immigrated to the States). Based on everything I've heard, gotta easily go with L.A. Los Angeles is sprawling, and you have plentiful options whether you want to live in a big city condo and take public transit, or whether you want a quieter suburbanite lifestyle. Costs are expensive, but again, there seems to be a wider range than New York (where everything is super expensive and there's nothing you can do about it).

You're close to some of the best beaches and theme parks in the world. Entertainment options are limitless, though that has to be the case in both cities. And this is subjective, but I really enjoy the L.A. weather, where it's almost never cold and the heat is manageable.

Maybe I'm giving NYC an unfair shake, though. Enlighten me, NYC dudes.

I think 91/94 is the least likely result to flip (91 got six great pictures and 94 was missing MMX, likely its #3 game). However, if there's one console that MIGHT have been able to swing a match, it's the SNES. If both years are coming in at full strength, I can't totally discount the X-factor that one console represents.

If you're throwing 1991 vs. 1994 in there, you can argue that 1995 would've beaten 2001 with the PS1 in the pic.

And no PS1 games for the year? Doubtful. Plus, 2001 has three systems that were all excluded. I think a picture that showcased the GC + Xbox + GBA could have helped 2001 become even stronger. I think 95 reached its peak in R3 when it got awesome pictures of four SNES games.

I now think there are four matches where, even within the constraints of SBAllen's chosen format, the loser may at least plausibly bring up the point of pictures costing them the match:

2006 vs 2011
1996 vs 2000
1991 vs 1994
2001 vs 1997

I'm sure somewhere, there exists a person whose only four misses are the ones above. You have my sword, sir.

(I'm 2-2 myself so I'll hereby stop complaining about that 2000 match)

It really doesn't matter when you consider that nowadays, everything changes in the last week when rallies become a possibility and Nintendo fans decide to "come home." In order to get expected results throughout a contest, you basically need to purposely manufacture a boring contest - like this one or rivals. Other contests have all had craziness go down, especially at the end, since late 2010. In retrospect, I now think it's very impressive that Cloud was able to pull two clutch wins against Samus and Snake and actually reach the finals in early 2010, since it seemed like the voters were distancing themselves from results like that even back then.

Basically, X-Stats and the "earlier matches" of a contest tell you that Chrono Trigger would beat Uncharted worse than Ocarina would. Potentially helpful for an Oracle prediction, but not useful when the best are actually up against the best.

I thought it was quite different. Here come the big spoilers. Please only read if you've already seen this movie or if you REALLY don't give a crap about the series plot.

My favorite part of Prometheus, by far, was the introduction of the Engineers. I loved the first scene when an Engineer dissolved himself to essentially create human DNA, I loved the buildup as the space crew uncovered more about the Engineers, and I really fucking loved the moment where they finally found a live one. That confrontation was probably my favorite moment in the series; I was so intrigued by this race and their motives - why they made humanity, why they wanted to destroy us, what it was they feared or desired. I felt you could have built an awesome series of movies around that.

In Alien: Covenant, the entire race of Engineers are killed in a single two-minute flashback. It was probably the most disappointing movie scene I've watched in years, because it pissed away ALL the potential that Prometheus built, and it reduced the Engineers to a mere plot point.

So basically, David and the lone surviving female from the last movie (Dr. Shaw?) are flying the huge spaceship from the last movie and find the Engineers' home planet. As soon as they arrive, David drops a ton of Xenomorph bio-bombs on the population, infecting and killing all of them. That's the only time we see any Engineers during the whole movie. That lone two-minute scene where they all die.

Another space crew discovers this planet a decade later. There are no more Engineers or anything interesting. There's just Xenomorphs and David, who has since killed/experimented on Dr. Shaw and is now a textbook "mad scientist" trope. He loves to cultivate and experiment on Xenomorphs because he thinks they're the "perfect organism." He's egotistical and hates humans and wants the Xenomorphs to infect them all.

And I guess enough people consider this more interesting than the Engineers from the last movie. To each their own, but... I just don't get it.

Allen has been running and entering the contests (for fun; he is not allowed to compete for any prizes) for years. A few of us joked about pic sabotage but none of us seriously think he's rigging things just to earn a spot on the leaderboard. As creativename said, he's just made some very questionable pic choices. It sucks for the people who are getting screwed over, but you can blame him for a poor understanding of what the best pictures are, not for intentionally messing with the results.

FFVII isn't gonna clutch every match. Nothing does that. MGS had the "clutch" reputation for a while and lost it to Shadow of the Colossus twice in a row. Mario has it occasionally but has also faltered, most notably against Vivi.

Even Zelda has fallen to rallies twice in a row, and OoT didn't even bother putting up a fight last time.

Whether we're running multiple matches a day or utilizing the 12-hour format, we haven't seen one of those in seven years now. We have no idea where a lot of these characters stand, and I think such a contest will be a ton of fun because the internet is more meme-driven than ever before, so every character could be a 1-day all star.
