https://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/after-harvey-the-trump-administration-reconsiders-flood-rules-it-just-rolled-back/2017/09/01/c3a051ea-8e56-11e7-8df5-c2e5cf46c1e2_story.html
A couple of weeks ago President Trump scrapped Obama-era rules, intended to reduce the risks posed by flooding, that established new construction standards for roads, housing and other infrastructure projects that receive federal dollars.

Trump derided these restrictions, which were written in response to growing concerns over the impact of climate change, and other federal rules as useless red tape holding back the economy.

“This overregulated permitting process is a massive, selfinflicted wound on our country — it’s disgraceful — denying our people much-needed investments in their community,” he said in the lobby of Trump Tower in New York during an event to tout his infrastructure policies.

But now, in the wake of the massive flooding and destruction caused by Hurricane Harvey along the Gulf Coast, the Trump administration is considering whether to issue similar requirements to build higher in flood-prone areas as the government prepares to spend billions of dollars in response to the storm.

This potential policy shift underscores the extent to which the reality of this week’s storm has collided with Trump officials’ push to upend President Barack Obama’s policies and represents a striking acknowledgment by an administration skeptical of climate change that the government must factor changing weather into some of its major infrastructure policies.

White House homeland security adviser Tom Bossert said in an interview that the administration had already been planning to replace the 2015 standard that Trump rescinded Aug. 15 as part of a broader executive order on infrastructure. But Bossert added that, given the damage the storm has wrought and the money the government is poised to spend, “It might expedite our efforts to reach coordinated consensus here as we institute policy.”

“We don’t just want to build back faster; we want to build back better, faster and stronger,” Bossert said.

In revoking the flood standard last month, Trump shelved two significant rules that were waiting to be finalized. One, at the Federal Emergency Management Agency, would have required that construction projects funded through its assistance programs be built between two and three feet above the 100-year flood elevation in an expanded flood plain, depending on whether they represented critical infrastructure. The second, at Housing and Urban Development, would have mandated new or substantially improved HUD-financed projects, such as multifamily housing complexes, be built two feet higher in an expanded flood plain area.

Earlier in his tenure, Trump eliminated other policies and institutions aimed at incorporating projected climate impacts such as sea level rise and more frequent, intense storms into infrastructure planning. The National Environmental Policy Act climate guidance, which instructed agencies to review climate impacts in the construction of bridges, roads, pipelines and other projects, was revoked in March.
...
Recent federal analyses have all projected an increase in heavy downpours and sea-level rise in the United States as a result of climate change. On Jan. 19, an interagency task force issued a report finding that the rate of relative sea-level rise is highest in Louisiana, Texas and along the northern East Coast starting in Virginia — all areas prone to hurricanes. And the latest draft of a scientific report underpinning the National Climate Assessment concluded with “high confidence” that “heavy precipitation events in most parts of the country have increased in both frequency and intensity since 1901.”

The president of a Pennsylvania police union responded to Black Lives Matter activists demanding accountability for the police killing of a black man by calling the group a “pack of rabid animals.”

Philadelphia Fraternal Order of Police President John McNesby made the statement Thursday during a rally held by and in support of police, according to NBC Philadelphia. The “Back the Blue” rally was in response to a protest the week before by members of Black Lives Matter held outside the house of Officer Ryan Pownall, who fatally shot David Jones in June.

Pownall, a 12-year veteran, shot Jones in the back as he fled from a traffic stop. Police said Jones was armed with a gun. This marks the second time Pownall has shot a black man in the back as he was fleeing. In 2010, he shot Carnell Williams-Carney who ran from cops while having an illegal gun on him.

“That was the day I took my last steps on my own,” Williams-Carney, the now 36-year-old shot by Pownall, told Philly.com from his wheelchair. “I’ve been in a chair ever since.”

At Thursday’s police rally, McNesby called BLM protesters “racist hate groups determined to instigate violence.”

“When you go to work each day, you shouldn’t have to worry that a pack of rabid animals will suddenly show up at your home and openly threaten your family,” McNesby said inside FOP headquarters, according to NewsWorks. “These are not activists, they are racist hate groups determined to instigate violence.”

An activist with the city’s Black Lives Matter chapter, Asa Khalif, told NBC Philadelphia she and other members were only exercising their First Amendment right.
...
McNesby also came under fire last year after defending an officer that appeared to be sporting a Nazi tattoo. Last September, Officer Ian Hans Lichtermann was seen on social media with what appeared to be part of the official insignia of Adolph Hitler’s Nazi Party on the left forearm: an eagle with outstretched wings, topped by the word “Fatherland.”

While Philadelphia Mayor Jim Kenney called the tattoo “incredibly offensive,” McNesby had other thoughts.

“I’ve seen [the tattoo photo]. It’s an Eagle. Not a big deal,” he told Philly.com by text at the time.

A dispute between two pairs of women over back-to-school supplies at a Walmart in Michigan intensified quickly with a shoving match and then ended when one of the women whipped a gun out of her purse.

A witness captured the incident by cellphone earlier this week at a Walmart in Novi, Mich.

Police said two women from Farmington Hills and a mother and daughter from South Lyon were shopping for school supplies when they reached for the last notebook on the shelf at the same time, according to local media reports. Video shows the South Lyon mother, 51, pulling a gun on the two Farmington Hills women after they began grabbing her daughter’s hair over the item.

Police said the South Lyon woman had a valid concealed pistol license and that the gun was loaded, but there was no round in the chamber. All four women could be facing potential charges of assault over the incident.

Quebec is offering to help Houston in the wake of Hurricane Harvey and is at the ready for when officials there say they need it, says Minister of International Relations Christine St-Pierre.

St-Pierre says she spoke with Texas Secretary of State Rolando Pablos Tuesday early afternoon, offering to send equipment and crews to help restore power and to provide blankets, beds, pillows and hygienic products.

Above all, St-Pierre said she called to voice Quebec's concern for Texans caught up in the disaster.

"It was a conversation about how devastating the situation is and we want to express our support to the people of Texas," she told CBC News.

Pablos declined the aid for now, instead asking for "prayers from the people of Quebec," the minister said. "He was very touched by the fact we called him."

St-Pierre also offered the help of Hydro-Québec crews, which are part of a mutual assistance group connecting electricity utilities in North America's Northeast region. The group also provides assistance in major events outside that territory.

"Our crews are well-equipped and they have good knowledge of the grid so they can help to restore and rebuild the distribution lines," said Hydro-Québec spokesperson Louis-Olivier Batty.

Whether they get there by plane or make the 30-hour drive with utility vehicles depends on the need if it comes, Batty said, adding that Hydro-Québec's trucks "can do a lot of different work."

St-Pierre said Hydro-Québec sent 250 technicians in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, which caused severe damage and more than 1,800 deaths in seven states in 2005.

Giving them the benefit of the doubt and assuming it's a matter of trying to coordinate efforts rather than having a bunch of different crews in what are still flooded areas, but

I should have been clearer: I oppose at will employment, and I believe that all workers should have a union and collectively bargained rights and protections. My point was more to suggest that these goals are the solution to the problem perceived by our conservative buddy Mr. Lennon, who I doubt supports unions and worker protections. I don't believe his distaste at capital's power over this worker is accompanied by the willingness to actually challenge that power.

In our current circumstances, I am not going to lose sleep of a Nazi losing his job, but he should have a union.

Also, Jesus, being a white supremacist is not the same as being gay

They're different games entirely, really. The FM series is about racing on real-world tracks, and it's more sim-like, whereas FH is an open world racing game with more arcadey handling. FH3 is set in Auustralia, on a good-sized map, and has more of a customization aspect to it, though still limited in comparison to say, Need for Speed.
