rap started out as basically being party music, IIRC, but when it moved past that, to being about the experiences black people went through, it could be said that a lot of white listeners took notice because it gave them a perspective that they hadn't experienced.

but since then, rap has evolved to being whatever the artist wants it to be - alt-rap, nerd-rap, etc.
