He's a genuine hero in the eight-part Occupation arc, proof positive that the end of Season 5 and beginning run of Season 6 can work miracles on anybody. I also find his dedication to his job rather amusing, as well as his growing commitment to doing what's right. He becomes a kind of dime-a-dozen village idiot hero savant, not just your garden variety idiot savant, and it works. He's also the recipient of occasionally insightful commentary that just can't be delivered half as humorously with any other character on the show. It's a little bit dumb that he becomes the Grand Nagus in the penultimate episode, but I don't hate it. The Ferengi arc only delves into anything meaningful a short handful of times, and I don't mind it wrapping on a silly note. Rom, a changed man over the course of his time on the station, will help usher in sweeping reform to Ferenginar. Quark will tend bar, draw a line, and... well, more on Quark later. What I do mind is the fact that Rom of all people is responsible for my first over-the-character-limit write-up. --- |

Best Episode: "Favor the Bold" Worst Episode: "Profit and Lace" So I've defended Rom against KBM's tachyon bursts for the better part of 2017. As she watched his show for the first time, she developed a tyrant's wrath toward the Ferengi idiot, and I've had to step in and stop her from ripping him apart. Once, during a blue moon, she admitted that even Rom has his moments. "They certainly aren't many," she quickly quipped. "But they exist." Today I'm here to talk to you about when Rom's moments exist. But first, let's address the elephant in our room that you probably don't even remember about: Rom began as a slimy, hard-knocks character suitably-named "Ferengi Pit Boss". He has a brief scene in the pilot which firmly establishes him as a seedy underworld Ferengi criminal kingpin. This is hilarious to anyone who's seen more than a few episodes of the show. Rom is very quickly rewritten into an idiot savant who doesn't necessarily agree with the extremes of his native society, and for all his alleged flaws, he definitely fulfills a better niche. It's not an entirely seamless transition; in the first season's spotlight Ferengi episode, "The Nagus", Rom willfully and deliberately attempts to assassinate his brother Quark. Quark who, for the remainder of the series, Rom will insist he loves dearly and would never do anything to harm. And we believe him, too, because again, his niche is fulfilled and whatever else you may think of the guy, you'd be hard-pressed to deny his sincerity. So why isn't this early-days character differentiation more frequently discussed? It's simple: the Rom we know for the remaining 165-odd hours of television is remarkably... memorable. He's a doofus, but a loving doofus. He's intended to be lovable. KBM contests this. Eddv contests this. I... have him ranked 59th out of 72, so while this may surprise them both, I contest this too. The problem with Rom is that too often he descends too far into "this one's for you, nerds!" territory. Star Trek has a stigma in certain circles; it's perceived as TV for the nerdiest of the nerdy. But there are so many truly deep characters involved, characters who make me proud to label myself a nerd if that's what it takes to be a Trek fan. Then there are characters like Rom. "Haha, he'll never have a girlfriend!" Followed of course by the wish fulfillment arc of him getting a girlfriend through Leeta. Last night, scarlet asked why Seska is on this year's list. "I am altering the deal," scarlet. "Pray I do not alter it further [and include Leeta]." Rom, uber-nerd, gets the busty ditzy chick at the bar. It's very, very obvious that this is supposed to be some kind of male basement-dweller fantasy themepark. The romance is also fairly insipid, not because it's overly melodramatic (although Rom's commitment to misogyny and Leeta's commitment to idiocy is trying) but because the deepest it ever gets is in nonsense like "Doctor Bashir, I Presume?" in which Leeta poses nude for Robert Picardo, thus transforming into the world's worst Seven of Nine. --- |
