To be fair, it's Ash's own damn fault. He's encountered just about every single legendary Pokemon ever, yet he never attempted to capture any of them. Just because other characters who meet legendaries do something smart doesn't mean Ash can't do the same

Movies aren't canon to the animated series. Through I do think he should have been allowed to keep Meloletta, it liked him, it had no where to go, it was powerful but not unbeatable, it had Giovanni himself after it. But oh well, Ash's role has to follow certain rules no matter how stupid they are. they didn't want to let him have a mega so they let him have a form on par with a mega then made him give it away at the end, his Lycanroc is nothing more than an alternative form, it's not any stronger than the other two by much, I consider it on par with his shiny Noctowl, he'll be able to keep it but he won't be able to keep any Z-moves for the next region.

The same reason Case Closed has lasted for 20 plus years and not even a year has passed despite going through multiple birthdays, christmas and other holidays. The show is the same as stuff like Spongebob Squarepants and The Simpsons and Family Guy.

Prime example being the simpons episode with Bart and Lisa grown up in a future that's long since passed and our technology has not advanced nearly as well as depicted in that episode
