That's the thing though - if you want to give each entrant its "best picture," it's almost impossible to be fair. To be fair to a year like 2001, you need to show that it has something like 15 awesome/historic games. To be fair to 1991, you need to highlight the SNES significantly.

It's just impossible to do it in a way that captures the importance of every year because every year is so different. I mean shit, 2006 should have rightfully had E3 somewhere in the spotlight.

I don't think it's unreasonable to ask that every year has the equivalent of what 1997 got.

It had the first line with it's top 2, the second line with it's third and fourth, the third having the fifth and probably it's best diversity pick avaiable, and two whatevers in the bottom.

Simpsons is alright - I'm guessing most people have put a couple quarters in that machine, but it's no Killer Instinct. And Lemmings is certainly no DKC. I think Turtles in Time would have been a better arcade choice for 1991, but maybe Simpsons was more popular back then. Not really sure.

Turtles probably gets more of its strength from the 92 SNES port than it does the 91 Arcade release.

Heh yep. The MMX snub is the biggest for either year, but 1991 also has some... oddities that make things a little more fair. Castlevania IV is absent, and FFIV is buried at the bottom.

This one feels balanced, at least.

1997 had to be hurt by the pic factor last round as it only had an unimpressive 70.98% on 2007 while it could come close to 70% on 1996 this round. And everyone would assume 1996 is much stronger than 2007.

1997 would have done better in the first 2 rounds if PaRappa got replaced for either Mario Kart 64 or Star Fox 64.

I think 97 did fine with it's first round pic. Having SOTN and FFVII as the first two slots was critical. That probably matters more than having it's fourth strongest game being Parappa or Star Fox.

Not a chance. 1996 is fairly strong, but I think we're seeing it's not too different from 1991 and 1994, strength-wise. It might even be weaker than those.

I still don't get his problem with SMRPG, because I was doing that stuff for SMRPG in BGE3 and getting it accepted with no problem. To say nothing of SMW2 and DKC2, which all had sprites at their exact size.
