It's almost bizarre that 97's picture from last round is really the outlier, when it really should be the standard.

It might very well be the only time in this contest any year gets the ideal games in the ideal order. That's almost sad.

I don't think Allen is rigging things, as some suggest.

I think he's bad at pic selection and has the wrong idea about diversity over strength.

Yeah, he's not rigging things intentionally (it would be highly illegal if he claimed any prize money), but I don't think he has quite the understanding of how bad a match pic can make or break things.

In the first two rounds it got FFVII, SotN and GoldenEye, it was already doing pretty well.

I was mostly talking about later rounds, but even in those early rounds, it had Parappa on the third slot before Goldeneye.

I think order is just as key as the selection, and that bottom rotation might as well not matter, especially in the early rounds when there was actually five rotations.

Losing it's third and fourth is a pretty big deficit from last round, as it cuts into its Nintendo support big time.

2000 missing Pokemon hurts it a lot more than 97 missing GoldenEye.

The sad thing is, 2000 making it to later rounds still doesn't guarantee it would get Gold/Silver.

then Halo, Goldeneye, Paper Mario, Star Fox etc are all basically equal to each other, all games that seem to get knocked out in the second round of game contests

Goldeneye is way closer to SotN than those other games. In fact, Goldeneye beat SotN in the first games contest. The result would likely flip today, but 007 is still well above the likes of Star Fox 64 and Halo.

I had Melee > CT for the longest time, but then I realized that CT was going to beast mode through the contest and changed it to CT > Melee.

And that's how you can be wrong for the right reasons.

97 looks damn good with that lineup, and maybe swap out Parappa for something for the sake of variety.

01, I'll second putting in DMC instead of SIlent Hill, again for variety's sake. I'd also like to see Paper Mario on the third line instead of Halo or GTA, because I feel like 2001 was all about the PS2/GC/Xbox, with the N64 kind of just there.

Also, going back to 2000's match picture, the ideal picture would have been GoldSilver/Majora/FF9/DiabloII, right? I think I understand why that wasn't the picture, and it goes back to why I didn't really think 2000 was going to win that match. 2000 was too reliant on it's big name sequels. That line up is essentially Pokemon 2, Ocarina of Time 2, Final Fantasy IX, and Diablo 2. Deus Ex was there because it was an original idea to come out of that year, while at least Perfect Dark is only Goldeneye 2 in spirit.

So, I was right about 2000's reliance on sequels being its undoing, but right for the wrong reasons is still right, I guess.

I felt like the order of both 91 and 94's pictures was really wonky, but it was balanced.

Simpsons, Lemmings, and Daytona USA should have been in the bottom. And they both had some serious snubs (the SNES console, Super Castlevania IV, Mega Man X). So, both sides had a case when it come to picture dickery.

And let's not ever mention the Turtles re-release. Reshelled was a disaster.

Listening to this analysis on 1997's depth, I have to mention something before we get too far on the 97 > 98 train.

97 had by far and away the best and advantageous picture of the contest. The 1-2 punch was so damn potent and definitely played a part in that dominating performance of 96. But, can we guarantee that it will have that same rotation or something similar as it makes as run at the finals?

Even if us picsmiths come through on our end, we could very well see 1997's games in a different order come the finals and I think 97 needs that, especially since I don't see 98 going without OoT or Pokemon in the first two lines of the pic.
