The lack of Tyrion/Bronn interaction here is sad. If they never interact again, it's tragic. Tyrion/Jaime is so good here though. Great delivery on the promise of more to come. I also love that Cersei secretly knew about this. Nikolaj is knocking it outta the park this ep. Dinklage's stuttering is so unusual to the character that it's fiercely memorable too. He's obviously shattered standing here knowing his brother largely despises him. He wouldn't have cared before, but his journey toward a renewed sense of purpose has brought this matter back into his brain

aaaand here's Gendry. This scene's great. Gendry's gung ho "let's go" attitude, Davos making a big meta fandom joke, it's pitch-perfect. The follow-up with the two Lannister guards is a mixed bag. It ends well, obviously, but it overstays its welcome. It kinda tries to be Tarantino but doesn't have the energy for it

Jon finds out Arya and Bran are both alive and also the Night King is almost here, all in one beat. Zoom zoom zoom. This plot to pilfer a wight is so hilarious. Davos wants to smuggle Jon in, which means I'm about to see MAH BOI GENDRY. I love how this team comes together though. It's very Western. Kit's "trust in a stranger" speech is well-delivered; good acting here.

These squabbling families up in Winterfell over Jon's absence can be cut some slack since it's probably been several months since he left lol

I see people dissing the dialogue in this Arya/Sansa scene. Maybe it's not the snappiest, but it's totally fine. It's better than their reunion stuff last week, at least, which was somewhat middling. Arya's a little creeper with some of her delivery, which suits her nicely

Stannis didn't have a kingly painted target on his head at the time though. His lack of ability to compromise (except that one time he did the worst imaginable thing ever and then died) would be his royal undoing

Anyway, pizza is here. Well-done cheese with breadsticks and LOTS of cheese sauce and special seasonings and Mist Twist, so I mean, don't king me, either, I don't know what I'm doing like MEAT LOVER XXX fellas

Unpausing

The Night King looks at the ravens and they scatter. It's like... a deconstruction of the ravens being the all-seeing eyes of the dark lords of epic fantasy

I love these maesters chuckling amongst themselves and telling tales. It's like a BioWare codex until Sam paragon interrupts because plotoverdriveplotplotplotplotpleaseplotwehavesevenepisodesffs. Also this is the scene my friend finally commented that he likes "the guy playing that maester dude" and I got to express that Jim Broadbent is a talented character actor. Now the maesters are chuckling again. "Ahh, Lodos." *all laugh* You can really tell this ep was written by Dave Hill, who was originally responsible for those lore special features on the Blu Rays.

Seeing Tyrion and Varys sitting down and drinking together in Westeros, albeit with rather... dwarven surroundings, is very nostalgic. All threads are bare; Tyrion knows (and is probably right) that he can trust Varys, so it's very third-season. "Did you read it?" "It's a sealed scroll from the King-in-the-North." "... ... ...what's it say?"

Anyway, pausing, because pizza's on its way~

Djawadi is on fire this episode. I hadn't really noticed it so much the first time but I'm using my headset now and hot damn. The music in this Jon/Drogon scene is outstanding, especially the first ten seconds of it. Love how abruptly this happens, too. Another example of the more blockbuster approach to the series working in its favor to some extent; suddenly Drogon is interested in Jon, and Daenerys is interested in Jon. No words in this scene for a solid 100 seconds; this always stands out to me (in a good way).

"You weren't gone long"
"No"
"And?"
"And I have fewer enemies today than I did yesterday"
Daenerys learned from Stannis' grammatical tutelage; no wonder Davos is playing matchmaker

So on the other hand, the swift pace of the season has Jorah's return to Daenerys in the same scene where Jon/Drogon happened, and that's a bit of a rush. Doesn't really detract for me, but might have been better as a later-in-the-episode thing. Sort of dilutes the purpose of the overall punch of this extended sequence

Suddenly, ravens. Thousands of them.

Peter Dinklage has this brief wince at young Dickon right before it happens. Good times. Love everyone bowing before Daenerys immediately after the burning. Feels earned. I genuinely enjoy Daenerys, but I can't deny mid-seasons fare sometimes felt somewhat unearned for her

The Jaime/Cersei scene has more weight to it than some of their mid-seasons affairs, too. I wish Jaime's arc had gone in a different direction, but Olenna's postmortem shadow has added a layer I didn't expect. This "Cersei's allegedly pregnant again" thing is kind of hokey, but whatever

Jaime and Bronn surface for air. The Sonic the Hedgehog timer was on its last 1/16th because they swam across the realm to elude Daenerys' eyes and Tyrion's logical deduction

these hills make me think of the Frostback Basin in Dragon Age: Inquisition. Very autumnal. I'm glad Game of Thrones remembered to make the South autumnal now that it's, you know, winter

Jaime's hair gets darker every season, much like mine own

"I have to tell Cersei"
"May as well jump back in that river"

Tyrion is scouring the battlefield like a prowler in heat. Man, he is not sure how to feel about all these dead people who were mostly probably not assholes. I got really tired of Rains of Castamere motif seeping into everything back in the day, but it's unworn its welcome and it's a pleasant piece again

Daenerys is dressed so wonderfully for this burning ceremony that's being disguised as an anti-Cersei speech

I really like this scene; shoutout to James Faulkner because he conveys Randyll's despair-turned-pride at Dickon's stubbornness super-well. Too bad ya never gave a rat's ass about your other son, ya dick[on-maker]

In the books, they're 14 and 13 respectively at the beginning. In the show, I tend to think he's about 18 and she's 19. I don't know, it just feels right to me somehow. Always has.

The bigger question is: how old are they now? How many years have passed in the show? So hard to say. I'm thinking maybe four, but the actors are clearly my age (almost to a tee, in fact; just a bit older).

According to the Wiki we started in 298 and we're now in 304.

They also retcon the Battle of the Trident to 281 (instead of 283) to age everyone up however. Which would make Jon 17 at the start of the series and 23 now.

Huh. I was pretty close. I wonder if maybe I'd read this before and forgotten about it, and that's why I was so close in my guesses.

Six years seems a bit much, but maybe I'm just kind of unaccustomed to so much time passing in 10-episode seasons. Ye olde Star Trek spinoffs tended toward 26 episodes per season, so it was easier for me to fathom. That and, well, with the exception of late DS9, they were also way, way, way less serialized.

I hope they make it dark and gritty, like Battlestar Galactica -- or Game of Thrones. Times have changed and it's important that our media reflects that. Make it about a war for the survival of the human race. Make the robots not just our creation, but our mistake. I think we're looking at 10-13 hour-long episodes per season, so let's capitalize on that with some 9/11-esques.
