| LeonhartFour 03/10/17 5:42:51 PM #270 | Okay, I hit the first checkpoint of E1-5 Middle, and it's already been pretty lengthy, so I'll do an update here! This really is an excellent segment. The comedic writing is top notch. I love the double subversion and brick joke at the beginning with Lang, where everyone counts out as "1." Then you have Lang giving a birthday present to one of his men...only for him to say it's not his birthday...only for Lang to say it's not for him, but rather for his younger brother's wife's younger brother, which moves all his men to tears. It's a great moment. Anyway, the first part of this section is the investigation of the murder of DeMasque II, also known as Ka-Shi Nou (what's the pun supposed to be here anyway? Casino?), in the Allebahst Ambassador's office. Edgeworth, Franziska, Larry, and Lang all have really good chemistry with each other (it's weird how Edgeworth/Gumshoe and Edgeworth/Franziska as pairings are nothing special in E1-1 and E1-2 but they're both great here). I said that about the first three in 3-5, and that's largely why I think Larry's great in 3-5 (and here). He plays off of Edgeworth and Franziska really well, mostly because they don't pull their punches with him, unlike Phoenix. Edgeworth getting outraged when he realizes that the autograph he got came from Larry is fantastic, as well as his inner monologue that he was moved by THIS MAN's performance as something he may never be able to recover from (We also get another "THAT MAN" reference when Edgeworth and Franziska discuss Mask*DeMasque). In the "Edgeworth isn't good with names" department, he gets Larry's fake name wrong, as he calls him "Laurice Dounim" instead. He also writes down the name of passionflowers explicitly for the purpose of remembering their name. I think Franziska explaining the origin of their name might be the only reference to Christianity in the series, just as a weird little tidbit. In terms of stats, you've got four testimonies total: Two by Larry and two by Lang. Larry's whole "I wanted to be Santa Claus" thing is absurd, but again, the fact that everyone just gangs up on him for being so pathetic ends up being hilarious. Larry's complete defiance in the face of it is great, too. I love it when Edgeworth suggests doing a handwriting analysis to prove he wrote that letter, and Larry says, "I'll never write another thing as long as I live!" I also love the fact that Edgeworth mockingly calls him "Mr. Loving Knight" on multiple occasions. So good. Lang is really solid here, too, especially the more he gets to know Larry. "Tell me something: This guy has problems that run deeper than being a murder suspect, doesn't he?" I really like it when he gets angry at the MIB for arguing with Edgeworth about the Primidux Statue being the murder weapon and trying to get Alba's permission to examine it, and he goes, "Lang Zi says: .............Just go already!" Oldbag is probably the one strike against this part. Her whole pining after Edgeworth shtick does nothing for me (and her blushing animation is legitimately disturbing and the less I see of it the better). Edgeworth's reactions to all of it can be pretty good, but Oldbag herself, not so much. She does make a reference to the fact that her husband ran away and she can't find him, so apparently she actually is still married! Technically, Matt Ryan wasn't the best player on the best team this year for the Falcons. He was the QB on the best offense though. Heisman had a few that didn't go to the BCS Bowl that I can think of Well, you had Lamar Jackson this year, but he was so statistically insane that it was hard to ignore and no one else really stepped up to give him a fight. Manziel and RG3 won the Heisman in years they didn't go to BCS bowls, too. Maya is the definition of a damsel in distress.. what is it, four times now? Oh, no doubt, but I don't like Maya because she gets in trouble a lot. However, unlike Kay, she actually tends to be fairly resourceful when she does get in trouble. Being a spirit medium provides her with a decent advantage here though! And yes, I do think AAI2 Kay is better. I also don't get it because people are rather inconsistent on this. Someone like Rinoa in FFVIII gets a lot of hate for doing pretty much the exact same thing: Rushing headlong into trouble she's not prepared to deal with and needing to be rescued frequently. Now I like Rinoa, but this isn't a reason why. Of course, then someone like Dagger in FFIX essentially behaves the same way and suddenly everyone makes excuses for why it's okay and why it's different when it's not.
