Oh right, I need to mention how great AAI2's Pursuit theme is. It's already played a couple of times, and I love it. It took some time, but AAI2's OST is growing on me a little bit. That one's always been great though!

Eh, it looks fine. I don't have it set to fill the whole screen or anything! That would definitely look horrendous. I just used an HDMI cable to display my laptop screen on the TV. I mean, I guess it looks weird having the game only take up like a third of the screen, but whatever. I just wanted to fiddle around with it, but I'm not really good with tech stuff. It could be better, but I'm okay with it. Also, no pics.

Anyway, E2-1 Beginning finished! I guess I need to remember to use spoiler bars for a while now! I love the setup for this case because AAI2 definitely believes in the mantra, "Go big or go home." Right away, you know this is going to be big because it's a presidential assassination (supposedly). The game handholds you an awful lot during the early part of this case though, even more than it felt like AAI1 did, for some reason. You get mandatory tutorials on investigating, on talking to people, on using Logic, and, of course, Logic Chess, AAI2's new big thing, which is basically a Psyche-Lock with chess motifs. I wish the wrong answers were more rewarding instead of just some lame default dialogue because the options themselves tend to be pretty hilarious. It's usually obvious when you need to pick "Wait" instead of something like "Tell me or I'll have you arrested!"

There are a couple of unintuitive spots here though. There's supposed to be a section where you have to talk to the cameraman to prompt Kay to appear, but if you talk to him before you investigate, nothing happens. There's nothing to suggest you need to talk to him again, so I was a bit confused for a few minutes! I also forgot how incredibly stupid the whole "red mole" thing is and how the game dedicates several minutes to proving that it was, in fact, a laser pointer (this is after you've already found the gun with the laser pointer attached to it, mind you).

But other than that, it's pretty fun! Nicole is a cool new character with some fun animations, especially her damage animation. The fact that she was somehow in on the fake assassination plot was a pretty great twist because you never expect a character like Nicole to be anything more than a bystander who might have important testimony or evidence to give you. The De Killer cameo is great, too. I love how he's always stone-faced while his ice cream cone does all the emoting for him! Of course, his complete ownage of Knightley is fantastic, too, because it's always good to see an arrogant punk get humbled a bit! Knightley's good, too, don't get me wrong (although I don't love him quite as much as tranny does), but there's no denying he's an arrogant punk. It's part of the appeal, really!

In terms of stats, you have three testimonies: Two by De Killer and one by Nicole. They're simple testimonies, as you expect from the intro case, but seeing De Killer again is great and the swerve that he actually wasn't the guy in the red hood in Kay's photo (Kay immediately making herself useful this time around is rather nice, by the way!) is pretty good. This case loves playing with your expectations akin to how 4-1 does.

Anyway, that's all for now. I like to try to finish the intro case in one day if I can, but I need to take a break because everything in AAI2 is long! I'll finish up tonight.

5-4 is a fairly brisk case, yeah, but it'll probably still beat out 6-4. 5-5 is short for an epic case since it's a single-day case, but the trial is pretty beefy. 5-3 and 6-3 are probably fairly comparable lengths, but 6-6 felt like PW1 length to me when I played it. It's super simple and straightforward. 5-6 almost feels like a mini epic case.

I don't think longest game is a question. E2-5 is debatable though. the middle is s monster but the end is shockingly short. it's just Simon.

E2-5 is pretty massive all the way up to the end though. There's just so much stuff going on. You've got the murder, the kidnapping, the trial, the presidential assassination, and I don't think the showdown with Simon is anything to sneeze at in terms of length either. It mostly follows the same formula Alba does, except Simon's just a way better opponent.

DD and SoJ are tricky since they're six case games. I actually think DD will be longer than SoJ! SoJ has two trial-only cases and 6-2 is a single-day case. 6-5 will beat out 5-5, of course, but I think 5-2 stomps 6-2 and 5-6 stomps 6-6.

The two questions with AAI2 are "Can E2-5 beat out 3-5 for longest case?" and "Can AAI2 beat T&T for longest game?"

I feel pretty good about AAI2's chances of beating out T&T in total length because I think E2-1 and E2-4 will dwarf 3-1 and 3-4 and the other three cases will be comparable length. Heck, AAI2 might be longer at every turn!

Eh, I'm not sure if I agree about E1-5 End being the hard part. Alba's testimonies aren't that difficult. Now trying to figure out what the heck they want you to point out when you're trying to deduce how the statues got swapped, that can be a little tricky. I remember being a little perplexed the first time through when I was supposed to point out what item they used to get the sticks across, and I finally pointed to the crossbow, and Edgeworth is just like, "If you look closely, they're perfect arrows!"

E1-5 complete! There were five total Alba testimonies spanning about an hour and twenty minutes. The whole thing is rather repetitive and formulaic. Alba testifies; Edgeworth points out what he believes to be a decisive contradiction; Alba comes up with a flimsy excuse to weasel out of it and tries to leave; another character rushes in with just the piece of evidence Edgeworth needs to continue; repeat. Alba for the first couple of testimonies is pretty boring because all he does is talk about how all this is just a game to him. However, he does get serious once Lang strips his ambassador title from him because he can't hide behind it after that. The last three testimonies are actually pretty solid in terms of his reasoning and the battle between him and Edgeworth. However, it largely gets lost in the fact that they all pretty much play out the same way until Edgeworth starts thinking like THAT MAN and finally corners him. I do love the fact that Edgeworth ALMOST caught Alba because of the Steel Samurai stage show and Larry pointing out that Alba couldn't have known the name of a special move that was never used. Friggin' Larry almost caught the ringleader of a smuggling ring by accident.

Anyway, the final piece of evidence presented is the Yatagarasu's Key again, because you have to show what Coachen could have used to wound Alba during their fight. I think it's actually pretty cool how you have to use Alba's supposed reasoning for self-defense against DeMasque II against him to prove he was the killer. That was a neat turnaround there. I have no idea which pieces of evidence weren't used due to the sheer amount of them and the fact that Edgeworth reorganized his evidence three times (although the last time was simply to erase the passionflowers, for some reason). The last timestamp was after the final save point, so it's just a rough estimate, unfortunately.

The post-credits scene with Edgeworth, Kay, and Gumshoe is pretty nice. I think it'd be great if Kay somehow showed back up in the current timeline with her three-member team of the Yatagarasu that she plans to form here and that she's been helping Edgeworth behind the scenes ever since, especially once he became chief prosecutor.

All right, I hit the first checkpoint in E1-5 End! The investigation in Alba's office about how the statues got swapped and all that is pretty whatever, but Lang himself is great here. He pulls off a bluff worthy of Phoenix Wright himself when he accuses Franziska so Alba will let his guard down and allow the investigation to continue. Also, Lang catching Franziska's whip overhand is absurd, but that's also why I love it. So good.

There were three testimonies in that part: Two by Lang and one by Franziska. No real standout one-liners or anything here. It's rather straightforward until they finally get around to accusing Alba and he transforms. The whole thing where there's supposed to be Edgeworth facing a dilemma over whether or not to use the trump card and the video tape to pursue Alba completely loses its effectiveness because there's no real "choice" here. Even if you choose "No" here, Edgeworth just rationalizes away why he has to do it anyway. They should've at least made a bad ending or something! Oh well.

Now here's where the real "fun" begins! Should be interesting to see how long it takes from Alba's first testimony to the final contradiction and how many total testimonies he has!

She even explains exactly why she saved it, and she preserved it under the right conditions to keep the fingerprints intact because her father taught her that when she was a kid. It's almost like her dad gets a revenge of his own there.

Oh right, speaking of which, Shih-na's explanation about who she is and her role in the Yatagarasu is pretty fascinating. When she talks about how the order came down to kill Faraday, her face turns really sullen for a split second and she says, "It wasn't exactly a pleasant assignment." Perhaps a hint of humanity and regret on her part there? Then she concludes with, "Why? There is no why. I was destined to betray everyone from the very beginning," and she lives up to those words by giving Edgeworth a few hints he needs to take down Alba, so she essentially betrays him, too, on her way out the door.

I almost wish I could rank Shih-na and Yew as separate characters because I love Shih-na. Her design and her animations are awesome, and she's a fun opponent. Even when she starts laughing a lot again, it's much more tolerable this time because she's not saying dumb stuff like "YOUR WRINKLES ARE BACK" or just repeating something Edgeworth says and laughing about it. She just...laughs. I feel like she's laughing more at the situation or to be disarming than to mock/troll Edgeworth. I don't think it's really meant to be funny this time around either.

And E1-5 Middle is finally complete! That section by itself would be a top 5 total "day" for the series in terms of length if we counted it that way! I suppose I need to prepare myself for more of this once I start AAI2! Anyway, this part is pretty fantastic. The presentation and atmosphere is top notch. As I said before, this is the one part of AAI1 that you can actually compare favorably to great stuff from the OT. It's too bad they tease you that this is the finale, and then you've still got a few hours left to go (presumably) after this! You get two Shih-na testimonies, including the Presto theme for the last one, to further make you believe this is the end.

Let's see...How to break this down...Well, let's just hit the high notes. I don't know if you were supposed to figure out that Shih-na was Calisto Yew before you got to this point, but as I've said before, I'm bad at figuring this stuff out beforehand. My first time through, I felt like I was at the end of the case, and we'd seen neither hide nor hair of Calisto Yew, which made me very confused. Then I pointed out the first contradiction, and Shih-na starts laughing, and it was just a big "holy crap no way" moment for me, especially with "Announce the Truth" playing in the background when they have the sprites of Shih-na and Yew side by side. It's enough to give me chills even replaying it now. It's a legitimate top ten moment for the series. As an aside, I remember seeing someone say they immediately figured out Shih-na was Yew because they have the exact same face shape, which blew my mind. Who the heck is studying the face shapes of all the characters like that? For what it's worth, I looked at their profiles after he said it, and he's right, but still!

After the second testimony, you've got the reveal that the Yatagarasu wasn't actually any one person. Once again, the presentation is outstanding here. They do the callback to Badd's three reasons why the Yatagarasu never gets caught, Edgeworth putting the pieces together as to which reason pertains to which member, and that one image of the three members of the group fills in one by one as he points it out. It's super good. Then you've got Badd showing up at the end to point the gun at Yew's back as she holds Kay hostage (again). Lang sliding in to take the bullet for Shih-na is a fantastic moment, too.

Speaking of Lang, he's great here, too, even if he's not front and center most of the time. I think this is the part of the game that really won me over to him. I can't help but feel bad for him as he desperately wants to believe in Shih-na and you know how it's going to turn out for him. He sticks up for her all along the way, and he tries to be as transparent as possible because he feels like if she's innocent, they have nothing to hide. Speaking of which, for AA7, maybe we can have a new assistant and have them turn out to be the big bad! We haven't had that happen yet, right? Anyway, I like Shih-na's farewell line to Lang: "You're an extremely strong, nice, kindhearted...idiot of a man." That about sums it up!

Kay proves to be useful here, too, because she kept the trump card to prove Shih-na is Yew with the perfume bottle. She even sort of pulled a Maya, I guess, because she finds the "hair sticks" Shih-na dropped when Lang grabbed her, and those turn out to be fairly important! She found the "guitar pick" earlier, too!

Anyway, only one section to go. E1-5's still got a shot to rank near the top in total length if E1-5 End is comparable to E1-5 Middle, but I honestly think it won't be!

Reached E1-5 Mid's second save point! That one was a bit simpler and more straightforward. We spend a little bit of time in the Allebahst Rose Garden figuring out what made the Yatagarasu shadow, Larry pops out of the pool, and Detective Badd gives us Lotta's photo. We also get a fun exchange between Edgeworth and Franziska, where he tries to guess what one of the statues is supposed to be. He guesses the statue of the woman is supposed to be pouring water, but the title is something akin to "The Queen Extends Her Love to King Primidux" or something. This prompts Franziska to say, "It appears you understand nothing of a woman's heart," which leaves Edgeworth wondering how she made that leap. They also had a great exchange in the last investigation I forgot about, where Franziska talks about how she'll need to evaluate Edgeworth's salary and him saying he's thankful she has no control over that.

Anyway, next it's back to Babahl and the Little Thief recreation of the fire in Coachen's office (As an aside, Edgeworth calls it "Mr. Thief" here). It's a short sequence, but it's pretty important because you learn about the counterfeit bills being burned, the Yatagarasu using the revolving fireplace door, and everything points you to Shih-na as the prime suspect. It's actually kind of sweet before the recreation here when Edgeworth asks Gumshoe if he got what he asked for, and it turned out what he asked for were the floor plans for the office so Kay could recreate them with Little Thief. It's a nice understated moment of kindness from him, as well as a trust in her abilities.

Okay, now for the climax! Shih-na, here we come!
