First of all I didn't say "same" character. I said "similar". Secondly Saitama is a direct satire and commentary on superhero characters like Superman, so yes actually there's an obvious comparison to be made.

Groot and The Iron Giant play the same role in their respective stories. They're a foil to a smaller, weaker but intelligent and boisterous character. They guardians, protectors, innocent as a child, constantly getting in trouble, heart in the right place, not quite human, feared by outsiders, etc. etc.

Do I need to go on? I mean I can literally find op-ed articles all over the internet drawing this same comparison and heaps of fan art made by people who clearly feel the same way.

It's a double edged sword I think. The fact that so many are trying at the same game suggests a fairly healthy industry with lots of competition, which is why you can get something as amazing as Netflix for $10 a month.

If there wasn't so many services, I imagine things being more like cable tv - $50 a month for a selection of channels you hate and shows you never watch.

I'm sick to death of superhero stories where nearly all the plot mechanics stem from the simple fact that the protagonist is unwilling to kill the ultra psycho villain. The Batman problem, in a nutshell.

Take Madame Gao in Iron Fist. Just an irredeemably awful person who is beyond any kind of normal justice system at this point. She's gone way off the deep end of "turn her into the police and give her a trial" and into the murky depths of "someone in the CIA needs to put a captive bolt in her brain, set her corpse on fire and bury her under the Mariana Trench". But no, of course our lukewarm protagonist is going to tie her up in a chair, fall victim to her transparent emotional manipulation and then let her get away. Once again an entirely predictable exchange between an egoistic 2D protagonist who wants to be the good guy and a cookie cutter villain who somehow never gets a bullet between the eyes despite really asking for it.

So what I want The Punisher to be about is someone subverting all these tropes. I just want him to go in and fucking kill every single one of these awful fucks straight out of the gate. That would be a fresh superhero story.

I know deep down it won't be this. The entire subtext will be about his tragic past and a whole lot of moralising and him struggling with his demons. Probably gonna have Daredevil (a guy who has achieved exactly nothing as a hero) giving him a peptalk about the right thing to do while continuing to do nothing.

A man can dream though.

TL:DW - There are some really smart people, the best people, believe me - who's entire job is to figure out the exact qualities of frozen water samples from the past million years and the mechanism that contributed to these samples' chemical properties.

These really smart people - the ones with postgrad chemistry degrees specializing in this particular thing who spend decades researching this hyper specific thing, which allows them to tell even the slightest differences in water (including being able to measure from the water if someone has been eating chips in a room nearby) - conclude without any doubt that humans have affected greenhouse gas emissions in an objectively measurable way. There's not even a measured consideration in their findings. Just a simple "this is what happened".

But even then, we have a strong objection to finding like this, by punters and politicians who have financial assets to lose and so therefore somehow have a stronger degree of rhetoric in deciding policy around findings like this.
