I might be opening a bag of worms with this, but it irritated me when I heard it. Curious if people will agree that my former co-worker is wrong, or if I am in the wrong for questioning it.

So basically, my former co-worker and her husband were not originally from America, but were perfectly fluent in English. At home, they spoke on their native language exclusively, including with their young children. I asked her how the children did in school, if they did not speak English, and she said thats the teachers job - to teach them English. She said it worked that way for each of her kids.

That really rubbed me the wrong way. A teachers job is tough enough, maintaining a classroom of 20-30 children. If the school has a specific program in place to help young kids learn English, that is one thing. But this was not the case (I asked her specifically about it), she said that the kids just would learn English as the school year went along.

I dunno am I in the wrong for thinking that this was not ok, since the parents are fluent? That they shouldnt put this burden on the school and the teachers? Im perfectly open to criticism if you think I am in the wrong on this one. I feel like it could be a topic where there are arguments for
both sides, and im just ignorant on a few things.

Unless there's an ESL class at that school I wouldn't say it's the teacher's job to teach them English with zero foundation.

At the risk of sounding like a bad person, I think if you're in a customer facing job in most areas of the US, then you need to speak English. I went to Home Depot one time and asked a worker there where the paint is and he repeated the word "paint" back to me and looked at me like I had three heads.

Update: the meeting did not happen. He didn't want to have it until getting all the feedback from the other interviewers. I'm confused how that's the reason as my last interview was nearly a month ago and I would have thought he'd use feedback from the other interviewers to make his decision. Rescheduled to Thursday.

Leverage for a raise.

A raise? Nah, I need to go. I had one external job I thought I had a real good chance of getting and had several rounds. Then HR, never got back to me after promising they would and they reposted the exact same role with a lower title and presumably lower pay. HR reached out to me several times to interview for that role and never mentioned the previous one.

It would've required reporting to the boss of my boss. I had three rounds of interviews. Last Tuesday, I checked on workday the status and it said "Process Completed." That almost always means you didn't get the role if you weren't contacted prior. Also, it doesn't even send out an automated e-mail. You just keep checking until workday updates.

I held on to a very slim hope since I thought it'd be messed up if the boss of my boss didn't tell me anything prior since they talk a big game about wanting to develop people and best practices. Well, as of today someone external is taking over the role. I know since I checked the org structure.

Kinda super annoyed they wouldn't even tell me beforehand.

Talk to them, if they would tell you see why they did not hire you. Like it could be something easy you can change, it could be some bullshit that need to just forget and look else where. But if they are willing to speak with you listen to find out.

That'd be good advice if I had any faith in this place. Think it's time for me to look elsewhere. I applied for two other roles in the past year and those went horribly.

For the first one I don't think the hiring manager even read my one page resume. They didn't know my job title, which to me is the most important part. They also told me I lacked a certain skill and used that as part of the reason to deny me even though I 100% highlighted said skill on my resume.

For the second one, I matched every single qualification/responsibility and didn't even get an interview with the hiring manager. At most, two other people within the company could have said that and applied. I did get an interview with the initial hiring manager, but he quit, they backfilled that role before continuing the search for the job I applied for, and then the new hiring manager declined to interview me. That whole thing took five months with me flapping in the wind.

After those two incidents my boss' boss heard what happened and had me meet with HR. HR apologized for both of those debacles, saying neither of them should have went that way. While I appreciate the apology, what's done is done. This whole thing seems systemic so there's no use trying to fight it.

This past one was the best it's ever gone and it barely went anywhere. I can buy that I'm not the best fit for the role, but I don't buy that I wasn't good enough to get past the first round. I honestly think for this one the hiring manager most likely promoted one of his direct employees, which would be a good fit, but I have a very similar skill set to that person so if they got an offer, I should have at least got past round one.

It was a step up from what I'm essentially already doing. Internally, there was maybe one other person who had experience as good as mine. Didn't even make it past the first round. The hiring manager said we could talk about career progression if I wanted, but I'm pretty sure my career is not with this place if I can't even get past the first round for a role where I'm better suited than almost everyone else internally.
