I'd certainly be wary of trying to predict the machinations of the conclave, but your response doesn't seem well reasoned.

I'll play along.

Calling himself Pope might be a mistake?
Note how Henry VIII used the "Defender of the Faith" title previously bestowed on him by Rome for legitimacy.

The exciting alternative might be to declare the new Pope illegitimate, and try to install his own. Not new of course, multiple Popes is a historical good time, and plays into that good old American self obsession. Half of them would believe the US President can appoint the Pope.

With a bit of luck we could get a rerun of Henry IV (Holy Roman Emperor) vs Hildebrand, America excommunicated, religious rebellion, all kinds of interesting times.

HOWEVER: Trump could do what the Church of England did and just declare America no longer recognizes the authority of the Catholic Church, and declare the leader of America is the head of the Church.

The difficulty he would face is that he isn't trying to replace a single unified church in the way Henry the Eighth did.

Christianity in America encompasses an enormous number of denominations.

I'd almost encourage him to try (mostly because it would be hilarious). I would need so much popcorn.

If he was baptised a Catholic, technically yes.

Real answer, of course not.

Two thirds of the Cardinals who will be voting on the next pope (ie those Cardinals under 80), were appointed by Pope Francis. Likely giving a strong bias towards a progressive (by aging Catholic Priest standards) candidate.

The conclave will no doubt see a lot of hard-nosed politicking of course, so we'll see.

It's a smart move, likely the strategy Zelensky has agreed with European leaders in his recent whirlwind diplomacy tour.

Think it through, the Europeans have refrained from saying what they really think, because that would cause Trump to double down, he always does (also avoids immediate tariffs, diplomacy has many angles).

US shipments and intelligence resume at a time they are sorely needed.

Trump gets something he wants, but it's only useful if the Russians agree to a ceasefire (something they are unlikely to do at a time they are making gains on the battlefield).

It's a potential wedge to drive between Putin and Trump, if Putin won't agree, Trump looks foolish.

A lot of this is likely attractive to Rubio too, he's no Russia fan, even if he's eating a lot of shit at the moment to keep his job.

Now, this may all be for naught, if the hold Putin has over Trump is too strong, but at least we'll all know where we stand at that point, and time will have been bought.

What do you want people to do? He's been elected by the democratic systems your country employs. A majority of the votes cast were for him, much as we might hate that.

Resistance, such as it is, probably consists of dragging his legislation attempts and executive orders through the courts, and galvanising the Democrat vote to deprive him of majorities in Congress and the Senate as soon as possible.

No one is pretending that this isn't a disaster for America, the planet, and a rules based international order, but it's where we are.

Joe can pardon all he wants, he's earned that privilege. Every president has done it, it can right many wrongs.
My personal issue with this particular pardon is that he emphatically proclaimed a number of times that he would not pardon his son, then he does. It will most likely be the thing he is remembered for.

He hasn't though, most states have a pardon power yes, but not at the behest of one man (not even most monarchies), that's a US thing.

It's open to abuse, and has been abused repeatedly over the years.

That it is about to get a serious workout in a few weeks is slightly irrelevant to just how silly this medieval concept is in the first place.
