Technically speaking the RNC and DNC dates are not set in stone despite tradition, and no party will ever want to go first again. It is no secret at this point that the specific timing of Biden's drop out was, if not intentionally, the most unpredictabley incredible timing possible. Just imagine a reverse where the DNC spends 4 days attacking Trump and he just drops out that weekend.I don't think the convention order is going to be a big deal. The presumptive nominee dropping out of the race just isn't going to happen enough for it to matter. The more interesting thing to me is whether this leads to a shorter campaign season in general. The current multi-year long presidential campaign just kills enthusiasm; we wouldn't be seeing this excitement for Harris if she'd had to start her campaign last year. The Republicans long term prospects are very bad with Arizona and Georgia trending the way they are, and a host of former swing or even red states now solid blue. Arizona and Georgia are trending towards the Democrats long-term, but Nevada/Wisconsin/Pennsylvania are doing the opposite. This is actually a good trade for the GOP; the latter group has more Electoral College votes and Senate seats. The maps look pretty good for the GOP going forward, and all five of those states currently lean slightly red. The only reason it seems like they might need to win new states is because Trump is so unpopular that even a favorable map might not be enough to save them. --- Congrats to 2020 GotD Guru champ azuarc! |
