There are plenty of benchmarking sites, here's an example:

http://www.videocardbenchmark.net/high_end_gpus.html

From that chart, I'd definitely pick GTX 480 if 580 is out of your price range.

Good decision. PC is BY FAR the best game system, especially if you keep emulation in mind. $1200 (without a monitor in the calculations) should be sufficient for a great machine that can run everything on high settings. RAM and hard drive aren't very expensive, so get as much as you can afford after you subtract the other stuff. Your choices seem to be fine there. Probably even go for 16 GB of RAM. The GPU should be "second best" of what's currently available - their prices aren't unreasonable and they are only marginally weaker than the best stuff that costs much more. I haven't built a PC lately, but those have always been the rules of thumb.

First, I'd like to thank you for this idea, man, you've noticed I used it to make a similar list on my blog that people enjoyed quite a bit (I gave you credit there, too, of course). :)

This is a really great idea. It's also nice to keep the entries one-per-franchise!

Here's my list:

Top Tier (5):
Super Mario Bros. (NES, 1985)
Tetris (PC, 1986)
Final Fantasy VII (PS1, 1997)
Metal Gear Solid (PS1, 1998)
The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time (N64, 1998)

2nd Tier (15):
Pong (ARC, 1972)
Pac-Man (ARC, 1980)
Rockman/Mega Man (NES, 1987)
Street Fighter II (ARC, 1991)
Mortal Kombat (ARC, 1992)
Sonic the Hedgehog 2 (SMD, 1992)
Pokemon Red/Blue (GB, 1996)
Tomb Raider (PC/SAT, 1996)
Castlevania: Symphony of the Night (PS1, 1997)
StarCraft (PC, 1998)
Diablo II (PC, 2000)
Grand Theft Auto III (PS2, 2001)
Half-Life 2 (PC, 2004)
World of Warcraft (PC, 2004)
Mass Effect 2 (PC/360, 2010)

Others (30):
Space Invaders (ARC, 1979)
Duck Hunt (NES, 1984)
Arkanoid (ARC, 1986)
Dragon Quest (NES, 1986)
Double Dragon (ARC, 1987)
Prince of Persia (PC, 1989)
Contra (NES, 1988)
Dune II (PC, 1992)

Donkey Kong Country (SNES, 1994)
Chrono Trigger (SNES, 1995)
Duke Nukem 3D (PC, 1996)
Gran Turismo (PS1, 1997)
The King of Fighters '98: The Slugfest (ARC, 1998)
Dance Dance Revolution (ARC, 1998)
The Sims (PC, 2000)
Counter-Strike (PC, 2000)
Halo: Combat Evolved (XBOX, 2001)
Super Smash Bros. Melee (GC, 2001)

Separating Mario Kart and the RPGs from Mario platformers is okay, but would I separate Metal Gear from Metal Gear Solid? No. Same for Mario.

It's true handhelds didn't get many games... It just so happens that, aside from Pokemon, there's not much handhelds offer that really competes with stuff on consoles, PC or in the arcades (although arcades are mostly a thing of the past now, sadly).

Phoenix Wright is awesome, but too niche to qualify here. Warcraft and Street Fighter had other representatives. Counter-Strike has got pretty much nothing to do with Half-Life, it just uses the same engine. Yes, Quake and Unreal could've made it, but Duke Nukem 3D's got the charm and legacy they lack.

Thank you! :)

From the N64 suggestions, Goldeneye could've really made it (Mario already had a representative and I kept it one-per-franchise). There were plenty of FPS games already, though, so it missed the cut. But there were other notable exclusions like The Elder Scrolls, Fallout, Civilization and Call of Duty. They could've replaced more subjectively picked entries such as Earthworm Jim or Ratchet & Clank, but, at the end, such a list should have at least a bit of personal touch in it.

Ulti I know you have trouble expressing yourself sometimes but to me, a person who knows you pretty damn well, it seemed like you were just choosing to cut FD down which I have told you in the past I don't appreciate. You don't like it when people cut you down and you should have enough common respect for others not to do it to them.

There might be some jackasses who "bring it upon themselves", but none of them are regulars on board 8 and it certainly isn't FD. Secondly the sample size you've given people on board 8 would paint a very bad picture of you at times and we've discussed this. Taking instances of FD in Vent as "real life" is just plain stupid. As an example I will completely go off on a person in Vent when I am frustrated over a game but I just don't get frustrated like that about things I do on a day to day basis. Games are a stress relief for me, as they are for many people.

You didn't stick up for anyone but yourself and your own board image Ulti, and that was beneath what I have come to expect from you.

As an aside, Ulti I am guessing you are either going through a rough time in your life or you are just super stressed because school is having you crammed. I get it, life can be hard and stressful and taking a lot of tests really sucks. Don't take it out on other people though just because you are stressed yourself. FD is maybe online two hours a day now which is a lot less than most of us can claim, so don't go around telling people they have no life because that is crap.

This corresponds with my observations. Not so sure about the last paragraph - there may be countless reasons why Ulti's been acting that way in the last couple of weeks or so, but that is one possibility. Ulti certainly didn't "stick up" for FD in that thread, that's for sure.

Hey, Vlado, instead of posting meaningless links like an idiot, how about you demonstrate how any of those indicate that Sweden is a socialist country. For example, your link for education in Sweden reveals that Sweden has incredibly open laws for the establishment of charter and for-profit schools.

Grasping at straws, are we now? Of course Sweden isn't completely socialist (no extreme works in the real world), but the government there takes great care of its citizens and redistributes wealth, helping make the average person's quality of life much better than anywhere else.

The point is that certain socialist policies can benefit a society greatly - something republicans would hate to admit. :)

Newsflash: socialism hasn't failed, quite the opposite. Example: Scandinavian countries.

Scandinavian countries are hardly socialist in the strict sense of the word though; they are open, free-market, capitalist societies before anything else. They just have a big state that redistributes wealth heavily, mostly because they are so rich.

And what is the "strict sense of the word"? I know many Americans use "socialist" as an insult, but that's because they don't know any better.

The strict sense of the word would be full equality -- that is redistribution of wealth to the point where everybody is equally rich/poor. Exact socialism is very different from the system in the Scandinavian countries because, much like communism, it essentially takes away all incentives to work hard or to work in a demanding environment.

That's total bulls***. Socialism and communism are quite different. Read more books.

It's not sad. Working extra hours is not necessarily bad, we're just saying that it doesn't give you much room for personal life. You make your choice, if you need that extra money, more power to you. We're just discussing about whether the limitations are worth it, and in what cases.

I never said that shouldn't happen. We were talking, like, massive wealth, not merely having enough money to send your kids to great schools. There are certain prerequisites, you need a certain amount of money to provide yourself and your family with a quality life, but that only amounts to so much. Everything on top? Should go towards actually leaving a mark on this planet.

Do you recognize that you are being dogmatic and one-sided about this? Everything on top "should" go to wherever the hell you want it to go to. And you define leaving a mark on the planet as by having helped the common man. Again, a narrow definition.

...no, it's not narrow at all. There are countless ways to achieve that.

How about being able to care for your family? Being able to send your kids to the best schools? Being able to live in a nice house or drive a nice car? Being able to take your girlfriend/wife to a restaurant occasionally, and to be able to buy her a pretty engagement ring?

Now personally I plan to donate a percentage of my salary to 2 charities and to the Catholic church. But the bigger portion, by far, is for my family and my progeny. And I don't think there's anything wrong with that.

My answer to this is more "try to be wealthy"

they're systematically breaking down social mobility, this works now to some extent, it won't work in 100 years(maybe a lot earlier than that)

Very true, and we'd better not sit on our asses while this happens.

That's sad.
Why?

Wealth should be but a means to an end. What use is a lot of money if you don't try to improve the life of the common man with it?

the only real problem with the situation right now is that we're moving in reverse back towards the days of our ancestors because the wealthy elite want everyone beneath them to literally be slaves, but at least we're no where near there yet
My answer to this is more "try to be wealthy"

I'm not so kind a person I would care for the state of the common man if my life was luxurious.

That's sad.

I see your point, but I doubt many people refused to vote because of that.

Perhaps Luster can help with some stats at the end of the day, comparing the vote totals with other polls.
