Keighley interview with Jack Tretton:

Keighley: "what's up with the Vita?"
Tretton: "well, we only have an hour and fifteen minutes to show everything that we have and we have to cut the fat"

man.

yeah, what neon said. if they wanted to show that it isn't a cover shooter, they probably shouldn't have shown a section where you take cover and shoot.

but you are hanging out in cover and shooting people. that's the major emphasis of the action scenes. until they show me a section that isn't that, i'm going to assume that's what it is. if you're not shooting people, you're hanging out in cover to avoid being seen. you just aren't shooting as much.

anyway, I liked it. I just don't think it's a dramatic shift from what they've been doing.

I actually felt the other way. they are screwed when they're sighted thanks to the scarcity of ammo. you don't just unload clips onto guys.

I wish that ammo was scarce for the enemies as well and that one shot would kill you. I like Last of Us because it seems to have a lot of weight to its actions. the best way to do that would be to make it less video game-y. you're this regular dude who can somehow take a dozen shots before killed. blech.

anyway, minor nitpicking. the game looks good but not as good as everyone else is claiming. I don't get how it separates itself from Uncharted outside of the scarcity of ammo. the movement, the scenery, the cover mechanics -- all of it looks very close to Uncharted. the only difference is that it's different tonally, but take that away and you're playing Uncharted, basically.

you know, if you think about Sony rationally, they didn't really do that bad. Beyond looked cool (though zero gameplay shown), Last of Us is pretty much guaranteed to be good, God of War is God of War, Sony Smash Bros could be okay. four exclusives that MS doesn't have, whereas MS's top four were Halo 4, a Gears teaser, Forza and Fable Kinect.

but when you consider how much they dropped the ball on, and that damn book, it's hard not to call this a disaster for them. I expected them to really do something and they did absolutely nothing. they left a platform to die and they didn't show much for PS3 either.

2012 is going to be an off year for video games. come on Nintendo

even the Vita exclusive games are ending up on PS3. it's hard to find a reason to buy a Vita outside of downsized console spinoffs like Uncharted, COD and AC.

well, we'll see about the latter two. but I'm not expecting it to touch a console experience.

yeah I agree with Ubisoft > Microsoft > Sony > EA. Nintendo could announce 3 games in 15 minutes and have 45 minutes of Miyamoto dancing and would "win" e3. well, beat Microsoft and Sony anyway. Ubisoft was legit good.

also... where were the Vita games? they showed a COD they announced a year ago, and an Assassin's Creed. and that's it.

look at my recaps for Sony and for Microsoft. Microsoft had like 3x the stuff despite only having one system. sure, a lot of it was third party but damn. Sony's show was damn poor considering what it should have been.

- After ten minutes of nothing, here's Beyond. Lead actress in the game is Ellen Page, who Cage hypes up and then stays catatonic for the next five minutes. No gameplay shown, just some intiguing scenes. Given that they didn't show any gameplay, I assume it's another QTE game.
- Playstation All-Stars Battle Royale. Officially announced for Vita, cross-compatible with PS3. Game looks pretty much the same as before. Big Daddy and Nathan Drake officially announced.
- ps+ free games this month - infamous 2, lbp2, Saints Row 2.
- ps1 classics coming to Vita: Tomb Raider, FF7. Finally! Now we just need PS2 games.
- COD Vita finally gets announced. Black Ops: DECLASSIFIED coming this holiday.
- Assassin's Creed Vita shown. Just a teaser and some tie-ins with AC3 for PS3. AC Vita bundle announced.
- AC3 ship sequence shown: boat controls and battles. Exclusive dlc and bundles announced.
- Far Cry 3 multiplayer/co-op announced. They made it sound like the mode was exclusive to PS3 but it's just an exclusive map.
- They acknowledged that Move exists! And nothing else.
- WONDERBOOK. Uses the Playstation Eye! And a move controller! JK Rowling writing a book for it!
- This is unreal.
- Millions of dollars were spent on this.
- Playstation Suite ends the misery. Talking about being an open platform and allowing other devices to play I assume PS1 games. Renamed Playstation Mobile.
- God of War: Ascension. Goes on for about 8 minutes too long. March 12, 2013. February/March are looking to be killer.
- Last of Us. It's... Uncharted. With limited ammo and a bit more impactful. Also some AI interaction in pacing and in battles. Looks good, but also isn't the sea change that some people were trying to sell.

And that's it! No new games to announce at all (Except for Beyond which is out there), just a book, some DLC and some new branding on their mobile stuff.

you know what gets me with Halo? that game looks really good but in the end i know it's going to be a multiplayer shooter. if I could somehow be assured that it would remain as an atmospheric, Metroid-y campaign then I would probably be all in. kinda sad how all I really want is another Metroid game in HD with good controls.

I wish it were a new IP and not Halo - not that Halo is bad, but with it comes certain expectations and I doubt they're looking to reinvent the wheel there.

yep. and the year before too.

I thought they did a fine job though. marketed to their core, almost no Kinect BS compared to other years, interesting smartglass stuff, Halo 4 looked great (especially in comparison to COD, jesus), etc. yeah it's not gonna be for this place but their presentation was top notch (if a bit all over the place) and their pacing was good.

anyway, Microsoft conference

- Halo 4 shown - looks straight up like Metroid Prime. Jungle environments, atmospheric, scan visors, you name it. I'm sure it won't stay that way but I thought it looked great.
- Splinter Cell: Blacklist shown. Looks very stereotypical military shooter/Call of Duty-ish - grey, deserts, focus on gunplay. Has Kinect voice support. Spring 2013.
- EA Sports - Madden/FIFA 13 - have Kinect voice support. Nobody will use this.
- Fable: The Journey. Holiday 2012. Graphics look pretty dated.
- Gears of War: Judgment. 2013. Just a teaser shown.
- Forza Horizon. Dubstep. That's about all I got out of this one.
- Apps time. You can now do voice commands by genre! Innovation. New channels: Nickelodeon, Machinima, nba league pass, nhl game center, all espn channels.
- Xbox Music announced for xbox 360 and windows 8 pcs. Not sure what this is and they weren't very clear.
- Nike+ for Kinect. God knows what it is since I zoned out.
- Xbox SmartGlass officially announced. Integrates xbox live between tablets/smartphones and Xbox 360. Seems to do most of the Wii U features that you could do on the touchscreen, only it can be done from any tablet. Games can integrate social elements into games or you can use the device as a way to use XBL on other devices (netflix, last.fm, etc). Looks cool, if a bit unnecessary. That said, having these features on a phone could be really cool.
- IE coming to Xbox (finally!). Can use Kinect for voice commands and SmartGlass as an input device so you don't need to use a controller.
- Tomb Raider. This is totally Uncharted. They show a big action scene with lots of jumping, shooting and a little qte. I think it looks good but it's totally Uncharted. DLC getting timed exclusive for 360.
- New game from the Toy Soldiers devs: Ascend: New Gods. 2013. Looks like a God of War type game, but they mentioned asynchronous multiplayer so I don't know.
- Teaser for the new Twisted Pixel game. 2013. No idea what it is. Called Lococycle. Didn't look or sound like anything else they'd done in the past.
- Kinect game called Matter announced. 2013.
- Resident Evil 6. Looks very scripted and linear.
- Wreckateer. This is in summer of xbla. Angry Birds - better with Kinect (tm)
- South Park: Stick of Truth. Cool trailer, no real details. Apparently it's March 2012 though.
- Dance Central 3. Harmonix is killing the fake dancing genre just like they killed the plastic instrument genre. Also, they brought Usher out. Okay!
- Black Ops 2. Yep, Call of Duty. I don't even think Call of Duty fans are enjoying this demo.

And that's it!
