Wealth should be but a means to an end. What use is a lot of money if you don't try to improve the life of the common man with it?
This is my general attitude, honestly. If I ever become rich, I see no reason to not try to use the money to help people somehow. I mean, I would definitely enjoy the money I made, and I have no problem with rich people living in luxury. I just think that helping people is simply the right thing to do if you're able to do so.

I also hate when people say "this is objectively ____" when it is entirely subjective. The same goes for "this is factually _____" when it is not a fact at all.
actually, "in my opinion" acknowledges that you consider your opinion to be just that, an opinion, rather than claiming whatever statement you've made to be fact.
However, if I say, "The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time is a good game," am I stating an opinion or a fact? It should be obvious that I am stating an opinion, unless I say that it is objectively or factually a good game. I don't see why someone should need to tack on "IMO" to a statement like that.

Few internet trends are more annoying than people who are somehow incapable of realizing that "X is good" is an opinion unless it's directly spelled out to them.
There have been so many times where I've been accused of stating opinions as facts because I did not tack on an "IMO" or "in my opinion."
Those people are silly.
IMO.

What I *don't* like (and I'm sure youll agree) is the kind of sanctimonious bull that spews from the mouths of most environmentalist extremists. same with vegetarians, and I used to be a vegetarian myself!
Yeah, that's what does bug me. There's plenty of videos that have been shown here of environmentalist ads showing such things as people's heads exploding because they didn't want to reduce their carbon footprint, and polar bears falling out of the sky because of air travel. That's the kind of stuff that makes me just say, "really?"
I also disagree with some of the things they want to ban, like plastic bags (I'd rather they focus the attention on making people recycle them, since they have some other uses).
I actually feel that hybrids are a great investment, if only because they save big bank on gas over the long haul (and many brands, like the Volt, look great). I also fully support efforts to clean up one's community etc. etc.
This is the type of thing I often tell people, as well. It makes economical sense to go green in many situations.

And then there's Co-Op City's very own 'beach' in the Bronx, where I grew up. It's a black soup of chemicals and debris and I kid you not, I watched poor families let their children bathe in it when I was a kid.
Oh yeah, and it's got such a great location too. Location is everything, you know? Well in this case you can find the lovely Orchard Beach beneath an overpass.
That is terrible :(
You'd think that there would be more laws against such water pollution. Even besides the environmental issues, it's just plain ugly and toxic (I'm sure) to humans.

that sounds more like option #2 to me! i take option 1 to mean something more like environmental fanaticism
Yeah, that's why I was so conflicted. I tend to do things like teaching elementary school students about recycling, college students how to save money while going green, etc. I don't like doing things like shunning private transportation or anything, and, in fact, I have a car. And it's not a Prius, or any other hybrid or electric car!

As am I, Zachnorn. Well met. And I spend a few hours a week too. I clean places up and whatnot. Volunteer work is all.
Very nice. I've done that type of stuff a long time ago, but lately, I have been working on raising awareness. I should help with cleaning places up more, though. Some beaches are just a mess.

Fingernails are made of keratin, which is made up of dead cells. Your hair is also made out of keratin. You wipe with those fingers. It's cleaner to lick toilet seats than chew fingernails. You could get worms.
If all of that is not disturbing enough for you, sadly, I don't think there's much else we can do.

Not exactly a good source, but hey, "Shayna" has this to say: "I'm a certified nail technician, and we were told in our very first class that it's better to lick the inside of your toilet rim than to bit your nails."
Therefore, licking the inside of toilet rims might be a cleaner habit to pick up.

Yes, he is. He's a white Hispanic, and that's one one side; IIRC one of his parents isn't Hispanic at all. Hispanic is not a race, it's an ethnicity. Most people with a Hispanic ethnicity are considered white in terms of their race, but it's possible for there to be Hispanics that are black, Asian, etc.

California is very expensive, with everything. Sales tax had been 8.25% since the 90s here. I actually wish it would go back to that, even though it seems high relative to taxes in other states.

Wow, where do you live that has such a high tax rate?
Pico Rivera, CA. South Gate also had that tax. It was a temporary tax hike, it is "only" 9.75% (EDIT: just checked, that's correct) since July 2011. What a bargain!

I used to pay double the sales tax for tips, which, when I started doing that, came out to 16.5%. Now that my sales tax went as high as 10.75%, I cut that out and keep it at 17%.

But I also wish we were like other countries, and were never expected to tip.
This. I remember being told specifically not to tip in Australia, because waiters/waitresses actually get paid a decent wage. I'm sure that wage is at least minimum wage, rather than being paid under minimum wage like in the United States.
Tipping is an amazing system. This is all that I know from topics about tipping and from the play Nickel and Dimed rather than actual research, but I've heard that the tips allow restaurants to pay people less than minimum wage. If they can't get the tips needed to make their hourly wage the minimum wage, then the restaurant needs to pay the difference. Of course, the employees will suffer because they just became more expensive. The other thing is that apparently, it's not even just the waiters and waitresses that need to get tipped - the cooks also need to get tipped by those waiters and waitresses. In theory, if all customers were to not tip, everyone would end up getting paid what they are supposed to get paid anyway. It's just so much part of the culture now that you have to tip. Worse, I have heard that tipping is starting to be expected for takeout.
I don't know how true all that is, but from what I understand, the restaurant industry is pretty screwed up.
