This isn't all that shocking. Ever since Hubble discovered that the universe is expanding, rather than staying constant as Einstein hypothesized, there's been a bit of a hole in general relativity. It's been filled with dark matter, which is stuff made from something other than atoms that can't be directly observed and is instead inferred by matter around it. Now I'm not saying this is all a bunch of bs, but it does sorta remind me of all the hoops people jumped through to try to prove everything revolved around the earth in perfect circles. To find a gap here and there doesn't shock me at all.

Joost probably would have been great, but companies of that size (major networks) only look at the money. Hulu's model obviously made more. That's why a few Viacom properties (like the Daily Show and Colbert Report) even show up on Hulu. They could have revolutionized things but they didn't work hard enough to gain a solid audience and they didn't provide enough to incentive content providers.

Hate it if you must, but the alternative is one broken system or another (the later possibly being kept alive by Netflix).

The streaming and dvd by mail services will have their own websites now which will not be integrated together which seems like a step back to me. Two searches now to make sure the movie you want to add to your dvd queue isnt already available for instant streaming. You would hope that they would find a way fix that if they get enough complaints. The addition of games by mail is interesting and might be worth coming back for depending on the price.

This will be a set-back for Netflix in the transitionary period. However, they seem to be banking on the fact that one of those services will be in demand for years to come and one won't. Considering the fact that the Netflix name will be associated with the streaming side of the equation, it's obvious where they see things going.

They're adding games? Whoa, that's actually pretty cool. Hulu+ might not kill Netflix just yet!

I love Hulu and have Hulu+ and never once thought they were anywhere close to challenging, let alone killing, Netflix. If you're a movie lover Hulu is pretty hit-or-miss. Even if a movie you love gets on Hulu, it may not be there when you actually want to watch it.

If you're a TV-lover, you are limited to the three major networks and the cable channels they are associated with. Anything other than ABC/NBC/Fox and their close affiliates is unrepresented. No CBS/HBO/Showtime. And those last two, well, they are often the big dogs in dvd show rentals.

So right now Hulu is basically an alternative to a cable television subscription. On the other-hand, Netflix is the alternative to an old-school video store account. Disney (ABC) owns a huge chunk of Hulu but you can't get Toy Story off of Hulu. You might get at least one (or all) of them off of Netflix.

At this point, the different goals of each company involved with Hulu and their insistence of making as much now as possible keeps them from fully utilizing Hulu. There's a ton of content that could, even should, be on the service that isn't because it's really used as a promotional tool for the service (cable) that is dying hard right now. Hulu is really "well, you won't pay for our traditional delivery methods and we won't give them up, so here's a compromise of sorts." On the other hand Netflix has been "you'd pay for traditional delivery methods but more convenient ones exist too." And they are more consistent in what they can deliver.

This split may actually be bad for them. I think, honestly, it's a chance for them to create a forward-thinking company and a past-trends company. One that will take advantage of going forward and one that will eventually be destroyed by catering to people who resist change. In other words, they see loses coming in the future and refuse to take them on small gains today. Quickster is, in essence, a way to write off the loses Netflix would have to face when the day comes that people don't care about physical media for rental.

Meanwhile, Hulu doesn't care much about trends at all. They aren't worried that old revenue streams will dry up or that new ones will be opened. They exist to cater to what they believe is and will be a small segment of the market that is looking for an alternative venue. ABC, NBC, and Fox don't think that their cable broadcasts are going anywhere, but at the least they're willing to hedge their bets.

Gamefly is the only company to be impacted by this news. in the end. Netflix getting into video games is bad for them and they're already in a bad position.

Hm. Still trying to grok everything I read, but initial impressions.

There is definitely a left-leaning bias in Universities. It's really not that bad, though. There was only one class where I felt my personal opinions ever actually hurt me, and it was taught by someone who was mostly a women's studies teacher (though it was an English class). I simply wrote whatever I thought she wanted to hear after the first couple of assignments and aced it, yet I argued my own opinion in class (90% discussion-based) and had a lot of people agreeing with what I said. Good enough.

To say these institutions brain-wash people is to under-estimate your fellow man. They were brain-washed by their parents long before they could ever attend college/university.

@Metroid - Thanks for the clarification on liberal/conservative. The use of those words has been an issue throughout my life in many ways. That aside, I'd like to talk about two conspiracy theories from the 1960's. One was the assassination of JFK. The records being locked up for 75 years to protect the people involved, that sounds really bad. There's not a lot of evidence available to the public period, but the government hiding what they could have had looks pretty bad. Were top-level government or military personnel involved? Who knows?

Operation Northwoods. A plan for false-flag attacks on the U.S. in order to justify a war with Cuba. Well, ya know, there's clearly documented evidence that no one denies anymore that says that **** was real. Top-level military personnel were planning to carry out terrorist attacks to justify a war against Cuba... "just in case." And one of those plans happened to be exactly the same as the scenario that justified out entry into Vietnam, BTW.

To say that elements of the government would never attack their own people to get what they want is naive. Extremely naive. When their plans go public and they stop denying the fact that they made those plans that's an admission of guilt, and if they thought about it once why couldn't they have done it once or more? I'm not saying I agree with every conspiracy theory, but I will say none of them are crazy until proven absolutely false. And since the 9/11 records are sealed up for so long I may never see them in my lifetime, that book isn't closed.

My psychology professor said that in our dreams, we do things we would do in real life under the same circumstances.

Either your psychology professor is incorrect, or I've simply forgotten all the times I've walked up off the ground and into the sky, as well as the times I've looked behind someone else's eyes, or even that one where I sawed the legs off of a horse to make my car go faster.

If your car could go faster if you cut off a horse's legs and you found one you could do that to with no repercussions and you were in a situation where the act wouldn't disgust you, wouldn't you do it? I would. Now, none of those things are true, so obviously I wouldn't. But if they were the only result would be a faster car. which would be awesome. His Psych professor isn't saying these are things you'd just do, or that they are even possible, they are things you'd do if the circumstances that make these actions possible existed. If you could just walk into the sky I sure as hell bet you would.

But you don't disagree. You just use different words to define the experience. I tried to be more diplomatic, saying that the movie didn't "resonate" (rather than "click" [haha]) with audiences. We both recognize it wasn't great. Or good, or whatever. But we both agree that the movie wasn't entirely unwatchable.

Bucky Larson is, though (admittedly from previews alone).

Which is why I pointed out the difference between him and Williams. He did his thing, realized it was played out after awhile (and that audiences weren't going to pay for the same thing over and over again), and tried some other roles. I'm not knocking him. I'm saying that this movie is from the alternate reality where he didn't realize these things and, also, had less charisma to begin with. Though there is "You Don't Mess With the Zohan"... so it's not like he abandoned that dry well altogether.

Regardless, he has branched out, while this current movie from his production company plays off of what he himself knows just wont work anymore. Now, "Click" didn't resonate with audiences because of its heavy-handed (dark) moralistic view, but that movie was at least considered watchable. This Bucky crap, just no. Basically you've got a production company with a star trying to find his place in the world after his one gimmick has become passe and at the same time trying to find someone who can carry that old gimmick for him because he doesn't believe in it any more..

You absolutely can put Adam Sandler in a different type of movie and get great results (punch drunk love, anyone?) and even his mediocre attempts aren't that bad in any way. But this attempt to clone the past him for current audiences? Nope. Just not going to work.

To be fair, she's from China. Their government hides so much from their people that even if there were men rearing children they wouldn't let anyone know. You could ask her "are there nukes in North Korea" and her answer would be the same - essentially "I don't know, I've never seen a news report about it."

Okay, MAYBE they have heard about that. Maybe. But if they did, it was probably blamed on America and Europe and treated as a national threat to China alone. I mean, you don't pay hundreds of thousands of people to create misinformation on the internet at a moments notice for nothing.

I miss mid 90's Sandler. Billy Madison and Happy Gilmore are among some of my favorite movies.

Well sure, that was before his shtick ran its course. But if he made those movies 15 years into his career with some other hypothetical greats under his belt, they probably would not hold up so well. And if you gave the lead to someone with half the talent and even less of the charisma, well, you'd get Bucky Larson.

Does this really surprise you? The first thing I thought when I saw the trailer for the first time was "this is really like a terribly bad Adam Sandler flick from the 90's, except without Adam Sandler." It's exactly the sort of movie he'd star in if, much like Robin Williams, he simply didn't get the fact that the shtick ran its course more than a decade ago.

Also, it probably would have gotten better than 0% on Rotten Tomatoes if he did star in it, for his sheer charisma alone (which is in comparison to the absolute zero charisma of the movie's actual star).

You would have in a much smaller world. If that were an option in The Legend of Zelda, I'd abuse the hell out of it. Especially in the second quest. But there's a difference between a dungeon you can navigate in 5-10 minutes in a world where it'd take longer to get that kind of cash and one where you can get as much or more from regular play while navigating a dungeon takes several times the effort.
