Some other Heavy topics:

On GRU: They have to be pulled out to move faster, which requires a bunch of time, and you still move slower than the 100% speed classes (sniper/engineer/spy/pyro). The GRU is not for pursuit - it is for covering the long distance from spawn to fighting quicker, and for covering some other shorter distances a little quicker, but its use in the middle of combat is somewhat limited honestly. It is good, but it is not the cure-all for heavy's slow speed that some are suggesting. Also, you cannot use both this and the Fists of Steel.

On Fists of Steel: You have to have them out to be protecting yourself from ranged attacks - same thing as the GRU applies, weapon switching means even longer before you can react to a threat. You can be defending yourself with them, or you can be shooting, but not both at once. It helps somewhat against snipers, but an experienced heavy just knows what areas to not stand in in the first place anyway. Also, when you have the FoS out, you are almost instantly murdered by any melee attack thrown your way. Also, they cannot be used with the GRU. So it's one or the other. Heavy can't cover all his glaring weaknesses at once.

On the learning curve: Yeah, again, when people are dumb and run into your line of fire without a care in the world, heavy's friggin' easy. I will admit that heavy has a higher floor than other classes - someone picking up heavy for the first time is going to be more effective than other classes. But I would assume that people don't stay s*** at the game forever, and when you actually need to get skilled with heavy it's not that easy. You have to learn to compensate for his incredible slowness, his inability to react quickly to unexpected threats, his weapon's inability to get past cover, and his inability to retreat once committed to a battle. You have to learn things like the best places to position yourself for offense and defense, watching the state of battle and knowing when to commit to a fight and when to stay away, things like that. Just because it doesn't require twitch aiming and jumping around doesn't mean it's easy to play.

On the fact that people are s*** at this game: Well yeah, maybe they should stop being stupid and running right into the heavy like idiots. Yes, I am suggesting that. Nerf heavy and he becomes worthless against people who are good, and that's no good either.

On being able to run away from heavy just about 100% of the time: Yes, it's true! Heavy is f***ing slow and cannot chase you! I would not lie. If you find this to be untrue, one of two things happened: you pushed up too far and walked into heavy's territory, which is your fault, or you ran around a blind corner and got surprised, which does happen, but it's just as bad to get surprised by a soldier or a demoman or even a scout or pyro. You're going to die either way if you're not aware of the situation. It happens sometimes.

On the Tomislav: It might be a little broken, yeah. I'll concede on this. Still, not as bad as before it was nerfed. That was really bad.

On stabbing heavies: Yes, it works, and it's terribly frustrating. Just don't cloak right behind me, I listen for that.

On the minimal effort for maximum input of Heavy in pubs: Demoman's easier. Heavy is my most played, Demoman is my least played. Demoman is still easier. You think people are bad about walking into heavy's line of fire? Try watching people run blindly into sticky traps. You'll be amazed.

Also, para, what are you talking about not making the transition well. Dubel said you're one of the scariest highlander heavies he's played against!

That's nice of him, but I never felt like I could quite grasp it properly, even if I did manage to rack up kills. I'd still end up putting myself in stupid spots, getting separated from the team, and not communicating properly, and wind up getting too stressed out. Engineer suits me better.

I dunno. Some fans are more easily riled up than others. Most don't really care though. I think it's because we all know that we were skeptics at one point, so we get it. I say there's only two kinds of people: people who like ponies and people who don't know they like ponies yet.

Jesus I can't say enough about how much I love Party of One. I just rewatched the whole series a couple of days ago (which is why I have so much to say about it), and where Owl's Well had me kind of paying attention to something else half the time, Po1 had me giggling like an idiot the whole time. Just about every joke is funny, the art direction is inspired (especially the scene where Pinkie goes nuts, and that one bit with Pinkie and Applejack where there's like 20 reaction images in 10 seconds), and it has Gummy on top of everything. Gummy is the best side character.

Also that Rainbow Dash/Fluttershy scene is like the funniest scene in the show that nobody ever talks about.

No, you got what I said wrong. I didn't say heavy takes a lot of work to play in a particular game mode. I said that heavy takes a lot of work to play against players who have even the slightest clue what they're doing. If people played the game better, they'd find that heavy isn't nearly as broken as they think.

Of course we're talking about pubs, get that highlander/6v6 s*** out of here

Haha.

The point is that in pub servers, people simply don't know how to fight heavy, which is why he's so easy to play. When people understand how to fight the heavy, he suddenly becomes maddeningly difficult to play, because everyone knows you're the most dangerous person to be in the same room as, so the entire team will absolutely refuse to fight you on your own terms, because everyone else is capable of outrunning you and staying out of your range until they have an advantage. But nobody does this on pub servers, so heavy is easy.

It's not an inherent game imbalance with the heavy, people are just bad at the game. Simple as that.

Another thing I'll say about uber in pubs - heavy's a lot more effective than soldier or demomen there because there are fewer concerns about timing. Communication and purpose is important for a soldier or demoman uber, you have to make sure they've got their ammo loaded and all that. Heavy's just uber, hold down mouse, and fire away. It's effective in most situations, but it's at a particular advantage in unplanned and uncoordinated situations. Even pyro ubers in pubs oftentimes seem a lot better than soldier or demoman ubers. A team that has good coordination can make a lot out of soldier and demoman ubers though, oftentimes more than heavy because they're faster, their weaponry is harder to escape, and they're less easy to shut down.

Heavy's candidacy for uber is highly dependent on the situation. If there's a pyro ready to airblast you, he's likely going to waste most of your time if not all of it, which is where soldiers and demomen are better uber candidates. Heavy is also not always the best choice if you're trying to take down a sentry, although it sometimes works. If you can catch people around a blind corner, though, or you're in a fire-fight in a somewhat close quarter situation, heavy uber can be horrifying. Same goes for kritzkrieg.

You guys are all speaking like true pubbers right now. Yeah, heavy is easy to play in pubs where people don't know not to walk straight into your line of fire and die. If you're playing, say, competitive highlander, heavy takes a lot of discipline to play well. I was an amazing pub heavy that could never quite make the transition when we started playing highlander.

Heavy is fine as he is.

It's not completely negligible. The firing rate does make a difference. It didn't make enough of a difference before when the Tomislav had no spinup time at all, but now that it's been increased I think it's a proper tradeoff.

Also, the heavy minicrit thing hasn't been patched. I still see people using it. Really annoying.

I saw a Heavy running around with his minigun out with a minicrit boost up and was wondering what was going on. I guess that must be it.

That's no fun though. That's just doing more damage with a class that doesn't need it.

A Bird in the Hoof and Owl's Well That Ends Well were the two episodes I was referring to as my least favorites. ABitH starts out good with the party and then spends the rest of the episode doing boring jokes with Philamena and then caps it off with the return of the painfully unfunny Benny Hill chase scene. OWtEW just friggin' bores me to death, almost nothing Spike does is either logical or funny, and they start the episode playing up Owlowiscious as some kind of sneaky, treacherous character which goes absolutely nowhere. Would've been a much funnier episode if it turned out all along that Owlowiscious actually was trying to replace Spike.

At this point I was worried FiM was starting to suck a little and the end of the season wouldn't be very good. Then they followed up my least favorite episode of the season (OWtEW) with my favorite episode of the season by far and all was right with the world.

I think it's funny that everyone tries to come up with psychological reasons for why grown men like MLP, as if there has to be a complicated reason. I think the reason is just that the show is just really well put together, from the animation to the musical score to the voice acting, but in particular I think it's the characters. The show just has a really likeable cast of characters that people get attached to easily. I think that's what keeps people coming back.

I'm confused, since when has "only" 100k copies of a game not been good enough to warrant a release? Nintendo's published far less successful games with far smaller prospects before, and this game's already freakin' made, all they need to do is localize and distribute the thing. I'm certainly no expert, but the idea that this isn't likely to be a successful business venture just doesn't stack up for me.

Yeah it's the fact that Applejack seems a bit out of character in Applebuck Season that bothers me too. But I still don't think that doesn't mean you can't have fun with her. At least for the stability thing, I think that Twilight shares Applejack's duty as the voice of reason in the show, yet she still has plenty of room to be quirky.

The thing for me is that Applejack kind of comes off as sort of a mary sue. Unlike the other characters, she doesn't really show any fatal flaw that puts her in a really funny situation. She's stubborn in Applebuck Season, I guess, but I don't really buy it, and I'm in sort of a minority in finding that episode boring. She just needs a really funny episode revolving around her before I can really get behind her at all.
