Haha holy crap this game is the best

I decided to hire Alex Wright as the third man to replace Schiavone because I was hoping for positive chemistry with Tenay or Disco because Disco and Alex Wright as 2/3 of the announce team is amazing, and Mike Tenay has great chemistry with Alex Wright as well! Shame Disco and Wright don't have chemistry for the chemistry trifecta but whatever, it's still great. (yes that means I have a show in the wings that just needs a write-up but I just thought that was too awesome to not say right now)

Yeah it's that way to me for most characters for me, but like, sometimes I'll do the Heroic Mario thing and like a character a lot right off and then after I reflect on the game or anime or book or whatever I'll "normalize" a bit and be a bit less high on em.

I mean Quistis is still decent she might even go on a list like this if I made one (though she'd be much lower than 19) but just sayin I used to like her more.

Yeah I used to like Quistis a good deal more for a lot of the same reasons you did-- mostly "by default" cause there aren't many good female (or any) characters in the game. Then I took a step back and said to myself why did you like her exactly? And I couldn't answer it, beyond her being my third party member due to Squall and Zell being the only 2 other good party members.

I mean I'm even a sucker for whips and to a lesser extent sexy librarian/teacher types but Quistis isn't sexy to me for reasons I can't explain. Well, it's probably a lot due to her personality, actually. The whip doesn't really fit her at all as a weapon if you get what I mean.

So almost like I flipped a switch, I just stopped liking her as much. Happens sometimes.

I think you can adjust their pushes to lower midcard to avoid those penalties to be fair. I think the only drawback is it makes them get more likely to whine about not being on the card (and prevents them from getting "well executed squash" bonuses). But since you'll have them on NXT every week that won't come up.

By the way Tom answer this it matters as I might change the bonus q answer

Old "family comedies" are the things that come to mind immediately when I think of this. Stuff like Full House, Family Matters, etc from the late 80s/early 90s.

I'm not sure if it's just because I've gotten older or not though. I'm also not sure they were "great" in the first place but they were at least things I watched back then that I find practically unwatchable now.

And if you want a good example of how to do that storytelling practice, Uncharted action sequences do it well, as they usually follow intense firefights with some sneaking around or plot progression before the next intense firefight.

The puzzles though? Not so much.

I mean sterile in the sense that the action abruptly stops as you're solving the puzzle, and nothing is really happening aside from focusing on the solving the puzzle, and then right when the puzzle is done stuff starts happenings again. You're saying that's "a common practice across all mediums" and while I know what you're saying-- you want to give the audience a cooldown point-- I must disagree.

There's a difference between slowing things down a bit for a while after a climax to give people a chance to catch their breath and all but stopping things cold. You want to slow it down a bit not make it night and day from one segment to the next. Very few games have the puzzles feel as tranquil compared to the rest of the game as Uncharted does, and that to me makes them feel shoehorned because they ruin the pacing.

They're also not all located after climaxes, to be honest. Most of them are actually crazy action->PUZZLE->crazy action, with the climax of said crazy action being in the latter crazy action segment not the former. You can stumble into "good storytelling practice" by putting abrupt stops in the flow of the game but that doesn't mean it's done correctly or even if that was necessarily intent.

I haven't played UC3 but all of UC2's puzzles are gimmicky.

They don't have "gimmicks" so to speak but they themselves are gimmicks in that they don't really feel natural-- they grind the pace of the game to a halt as you constantly look at your guidebook and push blocks around or climb on limbs of statues or whatever in a very sterile feeling room. They just seem like they're shoehorned in rather than part of the natural flow of the game.

One tangential question though.

From: Rad Link 5 | #081
Yup. She has a profile in all the original manuals released for the game, just like everyone else in the game.

Are you sure about this by the way? Are you sure she both had a profile in the manual and that if they both did they didn't both say newhalf? Most sources I'd read before this point had them both as transgendered, and the concept art has the "newhalf" under both of them not just Poison.

I tried googling the manual to no help but yeah... you sure the Roxy thing wasn't just a retcon for the fighting classics version?

I just told you a reason they wouldn't remove the female sprites, though. You assume that the devs all have unlimited foresight or unlimited development time. Neither one was close to the case especially for late 80s games, which commonly were released with nasty glitches or things that just didn't work right.

It's a hell of a lot easier to slap "newhalf" onto concept art and into the manual than redraw an entire spriteset because you realize "hey maybe we shouldn't have a woman getting beat up" close to the release date

Well no the point is you have a character concept to explain all the female sprites in the game but you don't need to make both of them because the only reason the newhalf is in there is as a failsafe.

Like if there was an American release from back then that had them both in the game, or if Roxy had a different sprite, I'd buy it as ironclad, but it's very easy to just replace the yellow haired sprites with more pink haired sprites and only have one "female" character if that was good enough a solution. It makes even more sense if you think that the gender change was a (relatively) last minute thing.

I'm not sure I buy this as likely but it's silly to say it's not a possibility, at least.

That's actually the best argument.

The best theory I can think of there is because you could easily just palette swap Poisons over all the Roxys if you thought it'd be a good enough solution for America since the sprite is the same.

It's kind of a stretch though.

That doesn't necessarily matter. It's possible they changed it on the Japanese release in anticipation of a possible US release, then realize "hey we didn't think our brilliant plan all the way through this is going to offend silly americans just as much" later after it already came out in Japan and went more extreme later with the complete change.

Or they thought of it in development but it was so late they just wanted a product out there, so they slap on a "newhalf" tag on it in the instruction manual and hope that'll be enough, then realize by the time it's time to port it that that's not gonna cut it. Keep in mind that video games back then were a lot less lucrative so pushing back deadlines for trifling things was not done often.

It could also be that hitting women was offensive to Japanese as well at the time so they were trying to use the whole newhalf thing to cover them there too.

Lot of reasons possible, there.

Well it's not about relative to the US's release, because it's obvious that from the point of the Japanese release they'd already planned that because it's in the instruction manual too. The question is whether the original intent pre-release (which could be pre-late development concept art as well)

Not that that even necessarily makes her biologically female or anything, but I'm just saying. If the original original idea was for that, then it becomes more feasible that that's the direction she's taken now outside the first Final Fight game (which is where all the concrete stuff is from)

Not that it matters because "intention" right now is for her to be "ambiguous" anyway, and I don't really care either-- I'm just playing devil's advocate for her being a woman at this point because the controversy is what makes her interesting after all.

I was assuming that the other story was just a wives tale and that was being used to debunk it, but if the other story actually has sourcing I don't really think the sketch is strong enough to toss it-- especially since the sketch looks almost exactly like the in game model meaning it was probably the latest concept art they had

Well "she looks like a finely curved woman, but looks can be deceiving" doesn't necessarily mean "she has a dick guyz" it could also just mean "she's brutal like a man" or some crap. Or it could just mean "she's transgendered" because uh, a lot of people won't see a transgendered woman as a "finely curved woman" no matter how convincing she looks.

Point is it fits the "intentionally ambiguous" schtick Capcom has been doing pretty well. The fact that they took that line down to make it more ambiguous helps that too.

Yeah. I was actually arguing that she was actually biologically female that has a rumor that she might be a dickgirl or a tranny, personally.

That video kinda says that that's an irrational viewpoint to have, though. I wasn't aware it was so unambiguous with the early release stuff.

They've got her correctly ambiguous now but it's kinda hard to argue that way when there's a lot of early stuff pointing the other way now. The one argument you could make is that final fight Poison, being a generic, isn't the same one as street fighter Poison (who has a strong majority of her evidence pointing to "ambiguous"), and that she just has that rep because it was a common look among trannies in Metro City, but it's a stretch. It's the argument I'm going to go with because the other side needs more arguments at this point.

Clearly Capcom needs to make an official statement that says she's a straight up female just to give the other side some ammo. Convincing traps that you know are traps are no fun.
