MSG's Snubs for Best Atmosphere
(can't wait for Icehawk, gotta mosey, but I'm PRETTY sure neither of these are on there anyway)

The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword

Looking back, I think I probably should've switched this with Arkham City in its placing on Best Visuals, because I think SS has the better visuals while Arkham City has the better atmosphere. Whatever, they're both pretty impressive in both categories so VOTE STANDS.
*touchdown signal*

Homefront

Yes, I played this abomination of a game, and I'm not particularly proud of it, but at least it was for free. I probably wouldn't have even tried it if not for the consistent egging on of my friend to do so by doing everything short of shoving his game in my console and handing me the controller. I have to give it credit, though, it sets up a hell of a mood by starting you off on a death camp bus, riding by while Koreans slaughter all of your friends and neighbors on the streets. While its story may be laughable, its ending may be anticlimactic, and its gameplay may be directly ripped out of Call of Duty, it really did its job of making me hate who I was killing.

and maybe Bastion, who knows

We'll see about this when Icehawk finally posts his, but I absolutely loved the way the entire game was set up. Having your environment fly up from out of nowhere isn't something I would think of when designing my own game, and I never thought it would work that well, but it really does. In a year of tons of good downloadable games, Bastion stands out to me as the only one that's truly great.

MSG's Snubs for Best Soundtrack

Ghost Trick: Phantom Detective

You'd think I'd get tired of name-dropping this game, but I really don't. I've already showcased a lot of why this game is impressive on so many levels, and a lot has already overlapped. You've heard Lynne's and Jowd's themes, and the Rewind Time theme in my last update. There's lots of great tracks throughout the game, and they fall in three different categories....

Those that are neat to listen to on their own:

Those that create a great mood for the scene:

And the one track that does both absolutely flawlessly:

This particular track plays when you're in the process of saving a person's life in real time. The mood this track conveys the perfect message of "well, I better start getting my **** together here." It almost gives me chills just listening to it.

Sonic Generations

ROLLING AROUND AT THE SPEED OF SOUND
GOT PLACES TO GO, GOTTA FOLLOW MY RAINBOW
Dat classic remix

And the Rooftop Run theme for both its classic and modern stage is superb. Great job with this one, Sega.

Saints Row 3 and NHL 12

For some reason, I thought this meant original soundtrack, or else both of these might have been on my list. Whoopsies.

Full List:
1. Ghost Trick: Phantom Detective
2. Sonic Generations
3. Bastion
4. The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim
5. Portal 2

MSG's Snubs for Best Visuals

Ghost Trick: Phantom Detective

If you were to see this pick of mine, and decide to look at some screenshots for this game, you'd probably be really confused. But if you were actually see this game in motion, you'd be surprised the DS is capable of such fluid animation. Here's a great example:
external image
Or for an even better example, watch one of the game's many death sequences play out:

Batman: Arkham City

I don't think a game about Batman wandering Arkham seems like that much fun on its own, but its the game's various characters, and stunning, dark visuals that really make you feel like you're in deep **** the entire time. That's where Arkham City truly shines.

Outland

I never really got very far in the game, but there's one thing about it that I really liked, and that was the art style. The playable character's animations are incredibly fluid, and the 3-color scheme does wonders for the game.

Full List:
1. Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception
2. LA Noire
3. Ghost Trick: Phantom Detective
4. Batman: Arkham City
5. Outland

MSG's Snubs

Saints Row The Third

Saints Row 3's absurdity is only magnified when a friend is brought into the equation. I haven't laughed while playing any game more than I have in SR3, and I ****ing love it.

Dead Island

The poor man's Borderlands. Actually, it's more expensive, so I guess it's the rich man's inferior Borderlands? In any case, Borderlands is my favorite co-op game of all-time, and it would take a whole lot of effort to ruin that formula. Any other year (besides 2009) and this probably takes #1 hands-down.

FIFA 12

Oh hey, this time I can actually comment on it! FIFA 12's Online Clubs mode is the most fun I've ever had playing soccer, and in my grade school days, playing real soccer yielded some of my most cherished memories. I couldn't count how many times one of us has sent in a perfect cross only for our recipient to head it straight into the ground, or how many times one of us has had a perfect breakaway, only to shoot the ball miles over the crossbar. And it never gets less hilarious each time it happens.

Sanctum

While I was able to pick up Dungeon Defender the other day, I still haven't been able to play it online, so this will have to fill in. The premise is the same. You have two different guns (machine gun and sniper), a plethora of turrets, and a home base to defend from hundreds of monsters. It's basically a glorified first-person tower defense. It barely gets the nudge over Trenched in my rankings for the fact that it was perfectly playable with more than 2 players.

1. Saints Row The Third
2. Dead Island
3. Portal 2
4. FIFA 12
5. Sanctum

MSG's Snubs

Battlefield 3

While almost everyone on my friend's list was playing Modern Warfare 2 2 this year, three friends and I have been playing Battlefield 3 together. If you enjoy playing online and doing whatever you want, Battlefield 3 is not the game for you at all. However, if, like me, you have a few friends to play with, and want to work together, no online experience will feel more rewarding for you this year.

SOCOM 4: U.S. Navy SEALs

This game was actually a pretty big disappointment, but somehow, it's still better for competitive multiplayer than all but 2 other games that came out this year. Go figure.

FIFA 12

I actually don't like competitive multiplayer all that much, so I just had to reach for some to finish my category out. I can't have a list of 5 in every single category but this one! In all fairness to FIFA 12, it's entirely because the game is as polished a sports game as I've ever played, and its community is top-notch.

Full list:
1. Battlefield 3
2. Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception
3. SOCOM 4: U.S. Navy SEALs
4. You Don't Know Jack
5. FIFA 12

MSG's Snubs

Ghost Trick: Phantom Detective

I do plan on spoiling the game a tad in this write-up, but nothing specific, just a general insight about the game as a whole. It should go without saying, considering my list for best new characters, but Ghost Trick has crafted a story that plays to its character's strong points... maybe better than any other game I've ever played. Throughout the game, there seem to be a good 4 or 5 characters that are the antagonist, and you and Lynne have to work your way to the truth through all these obstacles. By the end of the game, you find out that...... none of them are evil. Not a single one of them. It's amazing how everything just seems to work out, but it does. And it does it fantastically.

Dynasty Warriors 7

I never in my life thought I would be praising a Dynasty Warriors game as having a tremendous story, but here we are! Finally, everything from the names to the actual occurrences stay true to its roots, and the stories of each of the three kingdoms are beautifully told. Dynasty Warriors 7 is the best entry in its series, and its Story Mode takes nearly all the credit, in my book.

MSG's anti-snubs

LA Noire

There are a lot of things that I will give LA Noire a decent amount of credit for. In fact, at one point in the game, I was more determined to play the game than I was for any other game that came out this year. It's just that by the end of the game, LA Noire seems to get terribly confused as to what it was trying to accomplish. Nothing that happens from the final desk onwards seems to do anything that compliments the three desks before it, eventually ending in a complete crash. Honestly, if the game just ended after Vice, I might be inclined to put this in second place, and be waiting ever-so-patiently for that sequel, but now? Meh.

Full list:
1. Ghost Trick: Phantom Detective
2. Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception
3. Bastion
4. Portal 2
5. Dynasty Warriors 7

Inspector Cabanela - Ghost Trick

external image
external image

Cooler than the other side of the pillow, baaaaaaby!

Detective Lynne - Ghost Trick

I don't think any one character has made me laugh quite as much this year as Lynne has. For being killed an extraordinary number of times in a single night, she has quite the upbeat attitude.

Come now, who can dislike that face of optimism?
(also the music is quite good)

Detective Jowd - Ghost Trick

(DAT MUSIC)
This one in particular is just because I felt bad snubbing him from my own personal list. God damn, Ghost Trick had some ****ing fantastic characters, but it feels wrong to have an entire category taken up by two whole games. >__>

Rucks - Bastion

I don't feel bad for anyone else leaving him off, considering the fact that I did as well. It's more an issue of having to snub him when he's only technically a character in the game. His character was more awesome for the writing and delivery than it was his own character. Besides, his obsession with going back in time was actually a little off-putting. I simply felt Rucks deserves props in areas other than Best New Character, and it appears the others agree.

MSG's Snubs
Because I took my submission seriously, god dammit (and apparently, Icehawk planned to do this anyway, but I wasn't here lawl).

You Don't Know Jack

I've never played a trivia game so hell bent on making you destroy your friendships before. And yet this does it, while demeaning all of you in the process by making you all pizza toppings. Just imagine running into this as a question:

Imagine that the makers of I Can't Believe It's Not Butter went on to create a whole line of 5 Stages of Grief products. After their existing product, which would come next in line?
1. I'm Very Angry That It's Not Butter
2. I've Lost All Hope Because It's Not Butter
3. I've Come To Terms With It Not Being Butter
4. I'll Do Anything To Turn It Into Butter

Or....

Let's say, for whatever reason, the AMA declares that all penises should have a second hole. What medical procedure would accomplish this?
1. penisectomy
2. penistropy
3. penisostomy
4. penisotomy

All the while, you're looking to screw your friends over, and take the top prize. Best trivia game ever.

Puzzle Agent 2

In this and the first game, you're an FBI agent (Puzzle Division) sent to Scoggins, Minnesota to investigate the recent closing of its eraser factory that supplies the White House with all its erasers. Over the course of both games, you: learn that there are forest gnomes working behind the scenes, investigate a cult of Nords who worship them, fall in love with a lady who turns out to believe that Kennedy faked the space race with the Russians to hide the fact that the government was working on a human/bigfoot hybrid to fight in the war, and scream at the top of your lungs in a crowded diner, "THE ASTRONAUTS IN THE FOREST ARE KILLING PEOPLE". Trust me when I say I haven't even really delved into the absolute lunacy this game portrays.

This is one of the game's puzzles, for God's sakes:
external image

Furthermore, if you mess up on that puzzle, it will give you a humorous depiction of what the respective meal would look like, of which the snake's is a nice picture of him with a huge ****ing bear being digested.

I mean, it's a whole five bucks for each of them, go play them.

Well, he lost, like, 45 seconds on Rainbow Ride alone, with his death, and the dumb hit detection. Then he had that 10 second lapse with the troll piano, and a bunch of small hiccups elsewhere. I'd say there's easily a few minutes of improvements to be had.

Hell yeah Big XII! Unfortunate that I didn't have faith in Texas, but I had their game pretty low on my confidence, I think, and I did call Iowa State's loss. Hopefully, K-State continues the Big XII trend.

It's especially weird, knowing that I've completely finished Super Meat Boy. Outland is just harder to me for some reason.

Outland was a little too difficult for me to really enjoy. It's neat and I can see why people like it, but it's not for me.

This exactly. I knew I was in trouble when I was starting to have trouble before I even got one of the achievements for it. There's just a bit too much going on for me to handle. I can tell it's a great game, but I just can't handle it. =\

As much as I liked DW7, this year was way too good for it to make my top 10 list as well. It's sad, because it really is the best entry in the series, and I'm a huge DW fan.

You have to get a certain ending next, so would you like us to just tell you which doors to go through next? I would highly advise it, but if you really want to go trial and error and risk getting the coffin ending (that does absolutely nothing but cliffhang you), then that's your call.

ProtonJon actually put it up before NCS did, which is really odd, considering ProtonJon's upload rate.
