3) Assassin's Creed Revelations (360/PS3/PC)
Developer: Ubisoft Montreal
Publisher: Ubisoft
Release Date: November 15, 2011

I probably jumped the gun talking about Revelations just now, but what I said holds true. Revelations was one of my most anticipated titles this year, from the moment it was revealed back in Game Informer. I loved the idea of Constantinople being the location, the hookblade looked amazing, and the details about bringing Ezio and Altair's story to a final conclusion hit a warm spot with me. Now, two months after its release, I look back on it and see a lot of problems but a mostly great experience that I don't regret playing. As strange as it might seem to say about a huge release, I feel like Revelations is underrated among both the public and the media. I'm pretty sure it's sitting under 80% on Game Rankings, and people are quick to talk about how bad everything in the game is.

I wasn't a big fan of the new Tower Defense minigame, or the Mediterranean defense sidequest, or collecting the data fragments, or the pages, or... you get the idea. I'm hesitant to say all of these were bad ideas, because I think with better execution and more time, they could be turned into something compelling. My bigger problem with all of it is that it's getting out of hand. Brotherhood started flirting with the line between fun extras and extraneous content, and Revelations takes that to an entirely different level. As soon as I finished ACR, I started playing AC1 again, and it was amazingly refreshing how simple that game was, how the concept of being an assassin in historical setting was so pure. AC has slowly turned into an entirely different monster than it started out as. My only hope is that Ubisoft realizes none of this stuff is necessary for AC3.

All that said, ACR's core experience -- the main narrative and everything surrounding it -- was great. Things as simple as Ezio's letters to his sister during loading screens were things that will stick with me years later. Old Ezio is my favorite incarnation of the character -- he's older, wiser, more mature, and all around more chill. It's amazing to look back at AC2 and then ACR, and see how much he's changed and all the development he's gone through. From young kid to Master Assassin, second only to Altair. Speaking of which, Altair was the star of the game, as far as I'm concerned. Assassin's Creed has always hinted at how great Altair was, how he knew seemingly everything, and Revelations shows us that in more ways than one. There will never be another character in the series who can live up to the legacy that Altair left behind, and his mark on the series is second to none. My absolute favorite scene in any game is his ending, in fact. I don't think any game character has seen such a fitting and impactful conclusion -- "Requiescat in pace, Altair."

The tombs deserve special mention here, too. I hesitate to call them "setpieces," but that's what they're more akin to than previous games. The Galata Tower is probably my favorite single area in any AC game. There were no enemies, no chase sequences, no other people, just Ezio climbing and jumping through this huge, expansive cave. There's one moment where the camera pans out and you see how small Ezio is, and it's a big 'whoa' moment. That's another part that will stick with me. Beyond that, I loved the Hookblade for traversal. Ziplines weren't that great, but being able to vault up buildings at a quicker pace, and make last minute grabs onto any place with an edge was nice. Flipping over guards didn't have any real use outside of the tutorial, though.

This writeup might make ACR seem like it should be lower than the top 3, but I thoroughly enjoyed the game. I'm into Assassin's Creed for the historical settings, the atmosphere, the wandering, the characters, and the story -- it's not about the super game-y sidequests and collectathons. I don't need a reason to explore a city, just let me do it. ACR delivers where it counts.

No, but you are in the smart people.

I don't get why this stuff bothers you now. There's stuff like collecting Borgia flags and Feathers in the first game, and its all completely optional. You don't have to do it, you can advance the storyline without touching any of it.

Personally, I love the stuff. If AC1 had more things to do other than the boring same three quests, I probably wouldn't have disliked it as much.

I'm fine with feathers and flags; it's everything else that has been thrown on top of those that rubs me the wrong way. Opening the map in ACR is a good example -- it is filled to the max with a million different icons. Optional though it may be, it's just a little crazy. For me, those things aren't why I like AC.

Yeah I'm kinda dreading trying a later AC game, considering I wasn't totally sold on the franchise to begin with. Collectathons are my bane and skippable or not I just have a feeling it might irk me to the point where it hurts my game experience just by being there. That's why I haven't played any games at all past AC2.

ACB flirts with the line without crossing it, while making some great gameplay additions to the series, so I would give that one a shot, at least. Brotherhood's gameplay, and everything it entails side quests included, is the best in the series, in my opinion. If you find that one to 'whatever,' then yeah, you probably won't be into Revelations.

I actually wish they had combined Brotherhood and Revelations into one game. The first half being a shortened Brotherhood, and then leading that into a more streamlined Revelations. As a single game, it would have made a much bigger leap from AC2.

Yeah. Well, the other thing preventing it is not having actually played through most of AC2 myself so I'd probably replay that first if I bothered. I have a decent idea of how the plot goes and all that due to playing a decent amount myself and watching a lot of it, but yeah, not too much motivation to really delve into it seeing the direction the franchise is taking (the story too to some extent-- just kinda more weird than it needs to be in some ways).

Just thought I'd comment cause it's the only game on your list I can really come close to commenting on except like Portal 2 which doesn't really compel me to do so. Not sure why I even read this topic given how little 2011 releases I bothered with but it's been interesting anyway.
