23. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles IV: Turtles in Time


Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles was a big part of my childhood growing up. The first Ninja Turtles movie is the first movie I remember going to the theater to watch (and it’s still pretty great today, in fact!). I watched the cartoon show all the time, and I had tons of TMNT toys. And of course, I loved the video games. The NES ones were pretty tough for me as a little kid, so I ended up using a Game Genie to help me beat them. Turtles in Time wasn’t so difficult to require a Game Genie. Plus, I used to play multiplayer with my cousins, which was a lot of fun. Of course, we had to argue over who got to be Leonardo (Yes, he was the favorite turtle for all of us, believe it or not), but hey, the rest are still cool, so it wasn’t all bad.

Turtles in Time just oozes Ninja Turtle charm. It’s hard not to like this game if you’re a fan of TMNT at all, or if you’re a fan of beat-em-ups. If you’re a fan of both, then this is the game for you! It’s got some classic stages and villains, and the levels are fun and varied. The enemy AI is a bit lacking at times, at least with Foot Soldiers, and there are a lot of those things. The combat is fun, of course. I love being able to throw enemies into the screen. That was a great touch. The bosses can be pretty difficult, despite having fairly predictable patterns. They usually attack frequently and fast, so it makes it pretty hard. Slash was always the boss I had the hardest time with, but I remember beating him without losing a single life the last time I played the game. It was a triumphant moment for me.

I think just about all the levels in Turtles in Time are pretty fun, and they’re pretty memorable, too. The graphics are very colorful and well done. I think my favorite level was the pirate ship, but there were several good ones. The little sound bytes (MY TOE TOE! PIZZA TIME!) as well as the announcer (BIG APPLE 3 A.M.) gave the game a little extra charm as well. It’s a shame that the Re-Shelled remake didn’t turn out so well. It would’ve been awesome to re-experience the game in a new generation, but alas, it was not meant to be. Probably the one downside to Turtles in Time was that it was so short, but at the same time, it probably contributed to its replayability because we could beat the game quickly, pick different turtles, and go at it again.

Before I conclude this writeup, I’d like to give a shoutout to Hyperstone Heist, which was basically the Genesis version of Turtles in Time. It had entirely different levels and bosses and stuff for the most part, but there were only like five levels total (although most of them were much longer than the average Turtles in Time level). It was also more difficult because the random enemy AI was more aggressive. Turtles in Time is better, but Hyperstone Heist is a good game in its own right and worth playing.

Jake Peril was the only character who went winless in NCAA Characters II. I think we had a couple of Dynasty Warriors go winless in the first one, but we would've finished with only one of those had I actually finished the season.

Yeah, I watched the cutscenes of MK9's story, and it was something else seeing Raiden failing at everything he did except for owning Motaro.

Also, Sonya is a respectable choice if only because Bridgette Wilson plays her in the first movie.

Oh right, and Sub-Zero was pretty awesome in the original Mortal Kombat movie, although that was the older brother in that one. Younger brother shows up for 2 seconds in Armageddon and is never seen again, like every character in that movie who isn't Liu Kang, Kitana, or Shao Kahn.

So yeah, that’s about it. Sub-Zero’s a pretty cool dude (LOL get it?). He has a great design, and some fun moves to use. Freezing people in their place and walking up to them to deal out some punishment while they’re completely helpless to do anything about it is a great feeling. Sub-Zero also has some interesting rivalries with other characters in the series, and he fights the good fight for change among his own culture. What a respectable fellow.

I’ve gotta say this up front. Fighting game stories can sometimes be amazing for all the wrong reasons, and Mortal Kombat might be the king in that department. Mortal Kombat comes up with crazy (krazy?) stuff like Raiden sending a message to himself in the past to try to change history so it doesn’t end up with Shao Kahn winning, and the plot of the most recent MK game is Raiden failing spectacularly at every turn trying to change history. One of the things that was changed in this alternate storyline was Sub-Zero being the one who was captured and turned into a cyborg by the Lin Kuei instead of Smoke like it was originally, which was actually kinda cool as long as the change isn’t permanent. I’m not even sure what Midway’s going to do with the series after that.

Anyway, back on topic, Sub-Zero’s always been my favorite Mortal Kombat character (kharakter?). When you’re a kid, it’s for simplistic reasons like he’s a blue ninja and freezing people is cool (literally). When you’re an adult…the reasons really aren’t that much more complex. I still think he has an awesome design. Sub-Zero’s still fun to play as with all of his ice moves. Granted, I haven’t actually played a Mortal Kombat game since MK4 because of how bad every game since then supposedly has been, but I’d like to check out the most recent one sometime because I hear it’s much better. I still enjoy playing around with MK2 every once in a great while, and Sub-Zero is my character of choice there.

I also enjoy Sub-Zero’s rivalry with Scorpion. Well, I suppose I need to clarify here because there are two men named Sub-Zero in the series, both are brothers. The older one was killed by Scorpion in the original Mortal Kombat and became Noob Saibot. The younger one is the guy who’s been known as Sub-Zero ever since, and he’s the one I’m referring to here. The original plot line was supposed to be Scorpion agrees to be the younger Sub-Zero’s protector as penance for killing his brother, but that detail was dropped over time. Now they simply agree not to go after each other, although they have occasionally worked together for common goals, kinda like Spider-Man and Venom were for a long time. I do like how Subby and Scorpion were willing to put aside their clan rivalries for the sake of the greater good though. It’s an interesting dynamic.

Sub-Zero also has a pretty good rivalry with his older brother after he becomes Noob Saibot. The two of them hold different ideals, so Noob has no problems becoming a servant of the Netherrealm to suit his own purposes and continue to roam about freely. He holds to the more traditional ideals of the Lin Kuei, wanting to use their power to destroy their foes. The younger Sub-Zero is more of an idealist, who believes the clan should use their power to help and protect people, which Noob Saibot scoffs at and says he’s not worthy to bear the name or uniform of Sub-Zero for believing such nonsense. At that point, they have a neat exchange, where Noob tells him, “We share blood. We are not brothers,” and Sub-Zero responds with, “Then I will not regret your defeat.” It’s nothing deep or profound, but I do like how he tries to stand against the long-held traditions of his clan to bring about a good, lasting change. He ends up being branded as a traitor at first, but he’s eventually able to reclaim his honor and become Grandmaster, which is cool.

Whats your most depressing sporting event that you witnessed live?
I actually haven't gone to many live sporting events, and I certainly haven't been to one where there was a lot at stake, like a playoff game or something. I did see the Braves get killed like 17-0 against the Expos once, so I guess that.

When the Ducks lost Game 7 of the Stanley Cup to the Devils back in 2002-2003. Giguere was so awesome that postseason that he actually got me following Anaheim that year in the playoffs and rooting for him to pull it off. They ended up winning the Cup a few years after that, so I guess it was okay.

I dunno, I'm one of those sports fans who tries to convince himself to take nothing for granted, even when the opponent seems easy. I suppose the closest thing I can think of is when Tennessee lost their homecoming game to Wyoming a few years back, which essentially sealed Fulmer's fate as coach, because seriously, who loses to Wyoming? Apparently, we do.

Haha, lots of Tennessee/Florida games fall under this category, especially in the '90s. Probably Peyton Manning's last game as a Vol against Nebraska in '97 as well.

I never get complimented on anything ever. I only receive mockery, mostly from children.

Well, that's not entirely true. I occasionally get "I can't believe you're 26! You look so young!" when people ask me how old I am. But I suppose I've now reached that point where people telling me I look younger than my actual age is a compliment, which in turn still makes me feel old.

Shadow Hearts spoilers below

24. Shadow Hearts – Overcoming Fox-Face


We discussed a Shadow Hearts moment earlier on the list which leads into this one. When Yuri tried to fuse with the Seraphic Radiance and failed, he essentially lost his sense of identity and became a broken man. He flew off to a castle in Europe, where he was eventually found by Alice and Zhuzhen, but he didn’t recognize them because his soul had retreated within himself and was trying to disappear, fearful of what would happen if the Seraphic Radiance was unleashed again.

After Alice and company manage to tame Yuri in the castle, she decides to venture into his soul to see if she can’t find some way to save him. She encounters the four masks in the graveyard, and I was honestly pretty surprised when she said that she loved Yuri when they asked her. It seems like in most RPGs, the characters can’t admit they love each other until the end of the game! So it was kind of nice to see Alice being so honest about her feelings for him.

Once Alice goes inside, she finds Yuri digging his own grave under the orders of Fox-Face, who had tormented him mentally at different points in the game. Yuri is clearly unstable, as he seems to think Fox-Face is his father and Alice is his mother, and he’s oblivious to the conversation the two of them have as he continues to dig. Fox-Face basically tells Alice all the stuff I mentioned about Yuri in the first paragraph about his fears, but she refuses to accept it. She believes he can overcome it, and her faith eventually frustrates Fox-Face so much that he punches her, which is another thing I was pretty surprised to see depicted in a video game: A grown man punching a woman in the face.

When Yuri sees that, he slowly begins coming back to reality, with Alice’s help motivating him along the way. I love it when Fox-Face goes in to punch him and Yuri just sort of casually kicks him and knocks him for a loop. He’s such a boss when he wants to be. I love this scene to see him face his fear of being a Harmonixer and finally standing up to Fox-Face, which was really a representation of his fear and self-doubt. And that’s what makes Yuri so great. Sometimes he gets knocked down, but he always gets back up better than ever and owns faces along the way. Even his Harmonixer transformation animation changes after this scene. Before this scene, Yuri screams in agony as if fighting the transformation, like he’s afraid of it (which Fox-Face alludes to during the scene). Afterward, Yuri simply swings his arm down, says, “Hmph,” and transforms like it’s nothing. I know it sounds silly when it comes to something small like this, but I totally marked out the first time I saw that new transformation scene. I knew I was a Yuri Hyuga fanboy from that moment on.

Bonus Question: What is your favorite “Character overcomes his inner demons” moment in a game?

Kind of a strange question, maybe, but it was the first thing that came to mind. Just be careful about spoilers!
