"Aquarius/Let the Sunshine In" by the Fifth Dimension
https://youtu.be/06X5HYynP5E?si=Ajy2YrOi_5jkdd93

While their arrangement was possibly the first major label recording of the song (it was certainly the most successful), it's actually a medley of 2 songs ("Aquarius" and "The Flesh Failures" (Let the Sun Shine In)) from the musical Hair , which debuted Off-Broadway in 1967, two years before the Fifth Dimension's version.

Also

"Because the Night" by 10,000 Maniacs
https://youtu.be/_AQByCFr0gs?si=FSfsgy3ux5I1n1iN

A cover of the Patti Smith song from 1977 (co-written by her and Bruce Springsteen). I've always enjoyed both versions. Patti Smith and Natalie Merchant have two VERY different voices, but they're both very 'powerful' in distinctive ways. I like the arrangement of 10K Maniacs' version better, but the lyrical bits are equally poignant imo.

Both are great. I heard Nirvana's version when it came out. I like Bowie's version better. I became aware of both again when they used it in the final season of Fringe. When you compare the lyrics to the Walter/Peter releationship its fitting. Was a good choice

I thought Torn's status as a cover was somewhat well known. It just seems like one of those things that pops up on music trivia fairly frequently.

That said, if we're doing "gotcha" covers, then I present:

I have a couple of Ednaswap's albums. Good stuff. I've always preferred their version of Torn. Imbruglia's version is imo too peppy and upbeat for the content of the song. Ednaswap's version is slow and somber, which I think fits so much better.
