I drove my 2001 Cavalier till 2019. It had 345k miles on it when it finally died.

It's not because I want to keep my current car, it's because I can't afford a new one.

The mustang I got is over 11 years old and still runs great. If it still runs, then what's the problem?

I drive a 2006 Honda Pilot. Its fucking weird to me that some people vehicle shame others. The people doing so usually havent had to struggle in their lives.

My newest car is my Ferrari, which is 9 years old.

I rarely buy newer cars, what's the point? Best to let them depreciate to the point where you can get fun cars for reasonable money, and you can pick the best maintained ones.

In my experience I've found that people who buy new cars generally tend to be those who want the shiny shiny, and are in constant debt to fund their "look at me" lifestyle.

Meanwhile my Ferrari costs about the same as a brand new X5. I don't see a single reason to buy an X5 over a Cali T.
No, I'm not that one.
These days I usually keep my cars for around 5 years. I used to keep them for longer, but I had a Jeep that I kept for 7 that was literally falling apart as it moved. Not making that mistake again.

I do usually buy new, but that's mainly because I want a warranty on my daily because I'm terrible at working on my own shit.

I drive a 2002 Envoy that I bought from my mom for $500 around 8 years ago. I'll drive it until it won't move anymore.

I can afford a new one easily I just dont see the point in needlessly upgrading. I dont have a super long commute. Its 20 miles round trip for me to work and back a day. 100 miles a week with a trip to the grocery store on the weekends. Thats pretty much the extent of my driving most of the time. 110 miles a week.

My truck is in great shape at 10 years old and 75,000 miles. I just put new tires on it in the fall. Outside of that the only thing I have had to do besides normal oil changes was threw a new battery in it a couple years ago.

Absolutely no reason to get a new one. Unless something major changes Ill keep this about another 10 years and then upgrade to what will be most likely my final truck. In 10 years Ill be 58 and probably retired. Ill barely be driving at that point. Plain and simple I really like my truck. I dont need a new one.

Ive never upgraded vehicles needlessly. Im only on my 3rd vehicle at almost 50 years old. I only got rid of my first vehicle because I needed 4 wheel drive after buying my house. My 2nd vehicle was ruined in an accident after 10 years. Now Im on my current truck which is 10 years old.

L&T is super successful though. He's owned lots of high end sports cars.

The people he's referring to are the girls who roll up to the BMW dealership with a Louis Vuitton purse, Yeezy's and no credit rating to speak of and finance an X1 for 96 months at 20 % because it has a propeller on the front and comes in bright orange.

I get that, but anyone who owns a Ferrari is still doing the look at me lifestyle. Its a status symbol.

I'd honestly be terrified to drive something like a Ferrari around here. I don't think I've ever seen one in person.

Makes sense, as cars are being made to last 200-300k miles now, as long as the computers inside them dont crap out
You gotta laugh. That is the one thing at the end of your life you will not wish you did less of.

Cars have been made to last 300k miles for several years now. Like at least since the 80s.

Your cars paid off and you now have the choice to start all over again, or just rolling in the same whip. The only reason I'd upgrade is for better gas mileage, but while you'll save on gas it still cost car payments.
I have my dream car and Im hoping to keep it for at least another 10 years.

Yeah my car's a gas hog but I only put like $60 in it once a month since I don't have to drive far. $60 vs a $500 car payment plus more for insurance is a no-brainer.

Edit: The average car payment is now over $700. It's been so long since I've had a payment.

Woe betide someone who grew up loving cars, and is in a position to drive one, actually goes out and buys one.

I talk about my cars on here because, well, it's nice to chat. However most people I meet in person don't know what I do for a living, nor what cars I drive.

I consider my cars as much a status symbol as someone who buys a house. Mr Bugs knows me, and is someone I'd love to have a drink with. People who judge me just because of what's on my driveway, though, are people I'd rather not be friends with. No offence.

[edit: No offence]
No, I'm not that one.
I have a Jeep I bought when I was in like last year of college, and it's still kicking it to this day. It hit its 10 years old mark and still runs smooth as hell.

I haven't crashed it once, but my dad did twice... Honestly I don't even do that much maintenance for it.

ITs insane how expensive cars have gotten, especially with the used market

I've found that once a car hits 10+ years, the plastic parts start to deteriorate, regardless of mileage. At that point, things stop being fun.
I generally buy cars that are 2-3 years old and keep them for about 8 years. Much of depreciation has already happened and the car is still under the factory warranty. For a little extra protection, I'll also buy an extended warranty to cover myself. I don't buy new cars as a practice.

I just bought a 2021 certified car last month and I'll keep her for a while.

That vehicle price explosion during covid was insane.

I had a friend who bought a new truck around Jan 2020, shit hits the fan, the dealership calls him in May or June offering like 20 or 30k more than he paid to buy it back.

After 15 years driving in a state that uses rock salt your vehicle will be rusted out anyway.

After four years of truck payments Im driving that bitch until the wheels fall off.
