I think to start a social change in America so that most people oppose Israel's crimes, and then put pressure on politicians to stop defending those crimes, and maybe even push back on Israel and force the crimes to stop and prosecute war criminals.

And also maybe freedom for Palestinians

If voters all opposed Israel, no politician would dare defend them. Overnight, you would see the US government change policy and become unfriendly to the Israeli government
What a dishonest trolling.
It's been undeniable that US is actively taking part in Israel's crimes.
The fact that these people refuse the idea that US should stop backing the genocide really showing what kind of people they are.

The initial encampment was for the BDS movement which is about trying to stop the university from investing in companies that are involved in the war (defense companies) and companies that do business with Israel. I don't think I agree with that as the investments Columbia had with those companies were through index funds. Not any like direct investments, but whatever. Doesn't seem particularly impactful.

In general, I'd think the idea would be to just express discontent with the current policies we have with Israel, and hope to persuade politicians that those international policies will cause them domestic troubles and unrest here. Specifically with sending weapons.

My only comment is that, the actual issues between Israel and Palestinians is ultimately up to those two groups though and...well both leadership are unreasonable. So honestly, best case seems like we go back to the status quo of Hamas in charge of Gaza and Israel continuing settlements in West Bank.

From just like an optics point of view, I'm kind of surprised the hostages aren't referenced more in the protests.

For a lot of campus protests in particular, there are calls for their universities (which hold substantial financial resources through their endowments) to divest from companies, such as military contractors, that do business with the government of Israel. This mirrors similar tactics employed in student protests against apartheid South Africa.

I think they're more asking why these citizen protestors think their words/actions should have an effect on the conflict when they're not even of the majority opinion.

Oh wait, that's right. Americans are more supportive of Israel than the protestors would have you believe. It's a complicated issue and you can't really say a "majority support Israel" and supporting the conflict, but more support Israel than they do Palestine/Hamas, while still having sympathy for the Palestinian people and their desire for a state.

Crooked Joe Biden would say, constantly, that he ran because of Charlottesville. Well, if thats the case, hes done a really terrible job because Charlottesville is like a peanut compared to the riots and anti-Israel protests that are happening all over our Country, RIGHT NOW, Trump posted on Truth Social Wednesday night. Trump also accused Biden in the post of hating Israel and the Jewish people, but hating the Palestinian people even more.

So when this student tells the university that they feel they feel unsafe, the university is going to summon the police, the police are going to rough up those who issued the threat, and the media is going to talk about the threat around the clock, right? Right?

STOP THE PROTESTS NOW!!!

A week ago, he was bitching about the NYPD not allowing his supporters to protest outside the courtroom. Now he's ALL CAPS-levels of mad that students are being allowed to protest Israel's treatment of Palestinians. Free speech, but only for him and his.
As long as the protest isnt violent or impeding emergency services, there shouldnt be need for a heavy police response or stopping the protest (outside a few officers and paramedics on site in case something does happen)

https://dailybruin.com/2024/05/01/pro-israel-counter-protesters-attempt-to-storm-encampment-sparking-violence
Security and UCPD both retreated as pro-Israel counter-protesters and other groups attacked protesters in the encampment led by Students for Justice in Palestine and UC Divest Coalition at UCLA that followed similar ones across the country.

There has been a minimal police presence on campus despite multiple events of counter-protesters antagonizing the encampment since Thursday.

UC President Michael Drake released a statement Tuesday evening supporting the universitys decision to label the encampment as unlawful, adding that when it threatens the safety of students, or anyone else, we must act.

In an emailed statement sent at 12:40 a.m., Mary Osako the vice chancellor of strategic communications said the university had called law enforcement personnel for immediate support.

Horrific acts of violence occurred at the encampment tonight, she said in the statement. The fire department and medical personnel are on the scene. We are sickened by this senseless violence and it must end.

At around 10:50 p.m., counter-protesters who had been gathering around the encampment since that afternoon began wrestling with protesters inside and CSC security hired by UCLA over the metal barricades surrounding the Gaza solidarity encampment. The barriers came down shortly afterward, and counter-protesters wearing masks then began shoving the wooden boards surrounding the encampment, attempting to topple them onto the protesters inside.

If they can be there, so can we, a counter-protester shouted through a megaphone as they tore down the metal barriers. Just before the barriers came down, another yelled, You guys are going to want to get this. This is history being made.

CSC security officers hired by the university retreated into Kaplan Hall shortly after, refusing to allow entrance into the building to anyone, including Daily Bruin reporters. The Daily Bruin had previously been pledged 24-hour access to Haines Hall by UCLA Media Relations to protect the safety of its staff, but when reporters attempted to access the building, they found it locked. No immediate remedy was provided, and Media Relations only said that they were working on providing a solution.

You're using the same logic that Reagan used to defend apartheid South Africa, because the ANC would somehow lead to SA turning communist.

Could the Chinese or Russians convince the Israelis to accept Palestinian statehood and end the war? If they can they're doing a lot better than what the USA is currently doing.
