It's not good. It's terrible. But caving is going to do far more harm than good.
The thing is there's a longer delay in losing healthcare to death than there is in losing food to death. As bad as losing healthcare is, there's a hope that Democrats can retake the government and bring it back healthcare. I don't think the number to die in the next year without healthcare is as high as the number to die without food support in the next year. If Democrats can't retake the government then there is no scenario in which ACA is still in place in 5 years even if they hold strong now, so we have to plan on a strategy where we can retake the government.
