Passing laws in the name of national safety is never authoritarian overreach.

Surely .

This will set a precedent. Any and all sites that have stuff America doesn't like will be banned.

I saw people unironically say they'd rather have authoritarian laws like this pass than see their kids on TikTok.

This is great news! Cant have adversarial foreign governments controlling our culture and political opinions.

This is the same thing as the not actually a ban right? The one where they just need to not be owned by a Chinese company that has to let China access all their data if China asks right?

Maybe fix that shit first and foremost, that would be awesome. But I'm not a millionaire that can lobby so

I'm glad Ukraine, Israel, and Taiwan are getting aid, but it's bs this got slipped in, too.
How does that happen, exactly? Do a majority of the House have to specifically vote to add it in, or is it really as simple as one dip shit slipping in whatever s/he wants to an existing bill and then the entire House has to accept it or scrap the whole thing?
Cause if the latter, Congress is seriously beyond fucked.
If the former, then at least you know a majority actually specifically wanted this included.

I just made a topic last night about Australia trying to be world internet police. Wouldn't be shocked at all if the US decided to do the same.
At least this is still only affecting the US, but countries are starting to push the idea that "geoblocking isn't enough!", you have to just remove it from the internet entirely.
Why are people against this? Its not going away

Its a politically smart move to package it with foreign aid. Now politicians wont have to take as much blame from their TikTok-addicted constituents who care more about their dumb 30 second videos than national security concerns.

tbh, it should've been a total ban, no workarounds, and also they should crack down massively on all tech companies shady algorithms and data collection.

but that won't happen, so

So when do we start banning all non American corporations from operating here?

I'm personally curious when they pass a bill forcing Elon, who got financing from Saudi Arabia, the country behind the September 11 attacks, to sell to an American entity.

No the problem they stated was that they cant stop the Chinese government from adding whatever they want to peoples algorithm.

As evidenced by the fact that Tiktok then used geolocation to push out videos to every user telling them to contact so an so member of congress. a bunch of small kids calling their congressional representative is NOT normal.

Congress acts quickly when a non-US based country is harvesting data. The discourse over the past six months regarding a certain region likely had something to do with the expedited process as well.

"Social media" is too broad a term.
I'm sick of going into paragraphs of detail on it, so the short version.

"Legacy" social media like message boards, char rooms, comments sections for articles... Are usually ok. Yes you have hives of scum and villainy like 4chan, but that's the point. You KNOW on some level you're consciously entering a hive of scum and villainy when you go there.

"Viral" social media like TikTok, Twitter, Instagram, Facebook is the problem. Their whole model is using algorithms to feed you related content and keep you on their platform and to interact with itself. You could start watching some stuff on woodworking and end up on some alt right pipeline thru "suggested" content all w/o leaving the website you were on. Also basically encourages cross-platform flame wars and drama b/c it generates clicks.

When people complain about "social media" they almost always mean viral social media, exclusively.

Those are my names for the two basic types. And it gets messy w/ stuff like reddit (mixes the two a lot) and youtube (started legacy, turned into viral gradually after google bought it).
Reminder that Microsoft was having discussions whether to acquire TikTok 4 years ago
Wrestling fans are the worst thing about being a wrestling fan.
With both iOS and Android allowing sideloading, I'm not sure how they're expecting to enforce this

this doesn't even make sense, cuz they can't control what goes up on Facebook, Twitter, or Youtube either, let alone all the other sites and apps.

Why the fuck does Israel need aid.
Biden is the greatest President ever.
Tik Tok was one of the most left leaning Social Media platforms. But because people didn't want Israel killing Civilians democrats signed off on stopping it . That is how much they care about Israel over America. And this is good for Republicans so it doesn't matter to them.

So I heard an explanation about this that makes sense as far as the basic why... Apparently Israel was about to lose the Yam Kippur war and the were threatening to use nukes to go out with a bang. We stepped in to help them to avoid a nuclear catastrophe and we've been supporting them ever since.

At some point, I'll have to read up on the details of that

So provide evidence that Tiktok is actually engaging in espionage. Oh wait you can't, you just blindly believe politicians who doesn't even know whether Tiktok works over wi-fi.
