Honestly he didnt have a lot of chances to be. I mean up until Raditz he was doing fine, but then other things kept getting in the way.
Spoilers
first he gave his life to save his son from Raditz, but then had to train with a kai to save the earth from vegeta. Then was badly hurt doing that so Gohan had to go get new dragon balls to revive others, but once he was better he rushed to help his son, and had to fight Frieza, and stalled Frieza long enough for them to get away. This got him stuck on an exploding planet, but he found away off only to end up on a planet of telporters so he took the opportunity to learn such a useful skill, and master his new ssj powers. Once he came back he found out about the androids so he and piccolo trained Gohan together, then Cell happened and they spent a few months training even more together, then he died again.
So other than yardrat or however it is spelled and after a Cell he spent a bunch of time with his son, and gave his life multiple times for them.
Maybe not the greatest dad, but honestly I can think of worse.

sure Goku might be a shit dad but its mostly cause he doesnt know any better...This whole "he's too busy fighting bad guys" doesn't really work when other superhero fathers are able to balance both their fatherly and superhero duties quite well.

thinking back to dragonball, I believe king piccolo was his only kill (and only when pushed into a deep corner did he do that),His first kill was in chapter 1.
Goku isnt a bad dad, but is horrible at making decisions. With Gohan, he honestly did good as an earlier post showed. He was fine till Raditz showed up......Which makes him a bad dad..... dude was a terrible father a majority of the series.
