I've been to like five different places and so far it's all average as hell. The NY style pizza in Charleston SC is bigger and waaaay better than the stuff here. Is pizza just another bullshit NY brag?

I always thought long island pizza was better than in the city.

If you can't find good pizza in New York, then you aren't really trying. Same thing here.
This rant was brought to you by your local random thinker.

You need to look up the big name pizza places. Don't expect every pizza joint you see to have amazing pizza. It's not like that anywhere in the world.
This is where cool people write stuff.
Famous Ray's Pizza

What places have you gone to? As a native New Yorker I will say that a lot of the famous spots are overrated actually. Two of my favorite spots I've never even heard anyone mention.
How quaint.

That's literally how NY pizza is advertised. Like go into any hole in the wall and it'll be the best pizza you've ever had.

The reason NYC pizza is so celebrated is literally just because a lot of people live there.

They're just cheering for the home team.

That first one looks way better than any of the stuff I've seen so far.

Oh? Cause I was in NYC riding the subway and a lady was in a hospital gown, cackling, and smoking a big cigar. Does that happen everywhere?

you have to ask the locals

but yes, it will literally be found in a nondescript hole in the wall, probably without any advertising

It's a cycle. Katz's was great until it became nationally famous, then the quality worsened and the prices rose. Then some other place is a hidden gem until it's not hidden anymore.

Always found it hit or miss there. Locals just eat garbage dollar pizza. A lot of the good pizza makers moved to the burbs or to places like Florida. So much good NYC style pizza in Florida.

Where in New York are you? Manhattan? Queens? Somewhere else?

Its the same over here for a lot of the local foods. Without meaning to sound like a hipster, once a great place gets discovered and becomes really popular, it tends to go downhill shortly afterwards.

Its often because the owners sell up when its at the maximum perceived value.
New York doesn't make good pizza.

If you're used to shitty Carolina pizza, then it's no wonder you don't think actual good pizza is good.

It's like growing up on McNuggets and then being served actual chicken cutlets and thinking they are gross.
It takes zero effort to be a good person.

Manhattan

Just hit a $1.50 Fresh Pizza (formerly 99c Fresh Pizza). There's a few scattered around. Certainly can't compete with anything wood-fired, but still better than nearly anything outside the area, and you can't beat the price-to-performance ratio. Ideally, eat it folded while you're walking to get someplace important.

This is the best pizza spot in Queens: https://maps.app.goo.gl/BrQzShuKPDXoJa8Y7

This is widely considered by some to be one of the best in Brooklyn: https://maps.app.goo.gl/zVcyunf86d93mgjx6

I dunno about any other places, I'm not a big pizza guy myself, but I can appreciate a good slice.
I'm from Queens and never heard of that first one in my life. Spumoni is pretty famous, but haven't had it.

I don't know if I've had any of the really famous spots except Johns of Bleeker and I thought it was mid.

If you're in Manhattan I would recommend Artichoke pizza. (But not the artichoke slice, it's a wet, disgusting mess.)
How quaint.

I was in NYC last year and had Lombardi's in Little Italy.

When I was in Charleston there was like 1 pizza joint open late and the line was out the building. But it was delicious. This was years ago not sure if more are open late now.

Anyway Im not in nyc, Im outside the city. But the pizza is definitely hit and miss. For every decent place theres 10 shitty ones.
