here in Portugal, most of us grew up watching the portuguese dub of Dragon Ball Z. and its fucking hilarious actually! lol

heck we grew so accustomed to it that it was hard to watch any other versions. >_>

I always hear about how awesome the DB manga was because he was always really good at choreographing the fight scenes to flow with where your eyes would naturally follow in the page. Is that true?

Yes.

Toriyama's manga paneling is still top of the game. Dude was legend at it. He had a way of making complicated actions and movements look clean, and flow effortlessly. Dragon ball is an extremely easy read because of it.

It's actually my one complaint about the current state of One Piece. Current One Piece is often cluttered and hard to tell what's going on, and Oda's action scenes can be very messy at times. That's like, never an issue in Dragon ball.

I mean its not romanized the way its pronounced, or even close to it. Its pretty normal to replace b with v, r with l, etc. during romanization, but Im struggling to think of another instance where they just changed the vowel. I dont think adhering to the pun scheme is a good enough reason, as casual viewers dont know that anyway.

I never was an anime guy, but you'd have to have lived under a rock not to recognize the impact that Dragon Ball, Dragon Quest, and everything else he worked on had on the world.

And he was so clever with being secretly "lazy" and making it work. Instead of just going full clutter like Oda or inexplicably barren like Kubo, he made it make sense. Check it out:

https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/a/forum/1/11873f19.jpg
He establishes the environment, the characters relative to the environment, and the characters relative to each other. Since we know Frieza's up there and Gohan's short, we can have Gohan hang up there and not need any background at all: we know he's "in the air" and the expanse in front of the camera is a flat plane. This continues with the next page:

Saves dealing with background for nearly two whole pages without breaking flow or making you question it. And he uses all that extra space to emphasize the impact of that last blow, to powerful effect.

Lol I remember hearing a story that he was sick of drawing this detailed statue at the World Martial Arts Tournament and just had Goku destroy it so he wouldnt have to draw it anymore lol

And apparently he made Super Saiyan hair yellow cuz he was tired of coloring Goku's hair full black every panel

The one thing I regret we'll nevere know for sure is wither or not Toriyama had a vore fetish. A lot of Dragonball villains had that as a gimmick Cell, Buu, Android 21, Moro, some of the most iconic scenes are characters getting eaten

Every single panel is consistently good looking, same quality, and the quality doesn't dip. Even when he doesn't feel like drawing something, he still makes it look good.

His mangas do an incredible job of portraying action within a still frame
aka TritochZERO
When I was in Japan, I picked up a Dragon Ball Z manga. They were sold out of all the big battles like Goku vs. Vegeta, Goku vs. Frieza, etc. But I did get Trunks vs. Mecha-Frieza, which was cool. The art is really good in it. I should read the whole series someday

I don't know about before super. It showed Shin in his normal body instead of the kibito Kai fusion.
You're right. I forgot about that. For some reason I was thinking that Shin and Kibito de-fused offscreen before Battle of Gods. So depending on whether Toriyama and Toyotaro cared about fitting it into a consistent continuity, Daima either takes place after Super entirely, or it takes place after the first 2 Super movies but before the Goku Black arc. Either way, Beerus is probably taking another nap to keep him out of it.

Better than what Kishimoto apparently did and never used Shino because he hates drawing all the bugs.

While that SJ cover sells it especially well, since at the time bodies were more distinct than faces, it still drives the point home just how hard AT shook things up.

And it's not that he was super duper hard working (that is literally all mangaka of the time) or had a special background or anything. He's just one of those one in a billion natural-born geniuses.

I wouldn't even call that laziness. That's efficiency. A pro who can keep scene continuity, with more or less background to fill in as needed for effect (as you said) as a nice bonus.

Good example you posted, too :)

It is NOT hyperbole to suggest that almost all Shonen manga of the past 40 years, and generations to come, will have at least some inspiration from Toriyama and his work.

Yes. Basically every major Shonen manga artist of the current era was hugely inspired by Toriyama specifically.

I write Naruto Fanfiction. But I am definitely not a furry.
I was a Dragon Warrior fan when it came out. It was offered a free game. Boy was that a smart move! (Excellent move!)

He made the art for that game, before I even saw/knew about Dragon Ball, which was new back in the day (1994 for me)

How do the Japanese get someone else to build a road without paying for it? Give everyone a brick. They will make it for you.

Dragon Warrior had an impact on my childhood, and sadly, that form of marketing simply does not seem to exist anymore. You get a demo for free, but a full game with no add-ons?

Met up with some friends for a game night, and we all toasted and took a shot in honor of Toriyama. Rest in peace. What a legend

His creations touched the lives of millions (billions, maybe?) around the globe. We should all aspire to contribute to society as he did, bringing happiness to as many people as possible
You don't have to even be a huge DBZ fan or a huge Dragon Quest/Warrior Fan. I only got through the 3 games. Everyone else evolved. I did not. Not since 1991!

Dragon Warrior 1 had a big impact in my childhood, and DW3 was huge before (?) JRPGs came to power (IE:FF4)

If it weren't for modern day BS and my waning interest, I would say that DW/DQ lit the spark for JRPGs in general. And that DBZ was the spark for the massive love of anime/manga that still is alight today.

Surely I'm not the only one who slips into that voice every now and then. Instead of saying "Dragonball z" I make it relevant to the situation. Like "find out next time on DESTROYING THE TOILET!" That's just an example. Never said that, but now that I have I'm totally gonna work it in somewhere.
