I went into kinda blindly expecting it to be a GTA clone, but I ended up liking the fact that it very linear and right to the point.
It's a remaster of a game released in 2002. Not sure what you expected, exactly. The game is literally almost 22 years old.No, it's a remake. It's literally 3 years old.
The game is great. If you go in expecting an open world crime game a la GTA, then yes, you will be disappointed. The whole point of the game is the story and the game world is just a backdrop for the story. So either you love the story or you don't.I didn't expect GTA, and by linear I'm not complaining that it's not open world, I mean the mission structure itself: going from point A to point B engaging with generic cover-shooting and scripted cinematic sequences. There is just nothing remotely interesting or satisfying to it. I do like the driving well enough.

I want to see someone defend this game.
No, it's a remake. It's literally 3 years old.Sorry that wasn't meant to be an attack on you or anything. I just see a lot of people that go in expecting it to be like GTA. I enjoyed the linear structure, but I can see how it can get boring.

Mafia 3 setting looks really cool but yeah I heard about all the filler activities so that turned me off from ever trying it.I hope that at some point, they remake 3 and improve the gameplay loop. Because the story is really really good.
Mafia 3 has a much less linear story mission structure, but it's problem is that it gets really repetitive because you have to do the same activities over and over in order to unlock the next story segment.Mafia 3 has a fantastic main story (and DLC).
