I remember that it basically killed the character contests for good. So, you know, win-win in that sense.

I missed most of the salt but I do remember wondering why tf some random league chracter was so high up in the rankings. It was worth it to see the Zelda fans mald.

Oh yeah I figured that out quickly, it was just weird because back then I really only used the site for the FAQs and walkthroughs so I was shocked when said character was beating the iconic game characters that always swept the contest normally.

It was Reddit. 4chan helped with the earlier push on L-Block.

Reddit also helped Tumblr in the later contest where Undertale swept Best Game Ever.

I remember the L Block one but I don't even know who Draven is at all.

Probably because as soon as Character Battles started I'd just avoid the poll for the month or whatever that it lasted. I appreciated the effort the site put in to make something engaging but those contests would drag on for way too long.

L-Block was fun, and it at least started out as a joke from actual people on GameFAQs.

Draven and Undertale is what basically led to the contests dying. That was the point where the backlash got bad and Allen just gave up on it.
