I watch these, BTW.

Shows with disgraced main actors/actresses, like The Cosby Show and Roseanne, could count for some.

Young Sheldon is just a really, really annoying and stupid show but I don't think somebody is a bad person for watching it.
Honestly the only thing bad about Young Sheldon is that Sheldon is as annoying as ever. Everything else about it is decent, but people like to hate on it. Even if they've clearly never watched it; I've heard complaints about it having a laugh track, which it never did.

I sometimes wonder if I'm a bad person when watching true crime docs is all I want to do.
Today for example, I don't feel like playing any video games, no anime, tv shows or films, don't feel interested in any of that.
But I DO feel like true crime. I'm happy to look at any disturbing real life stuff rn. Why am I like this?

Ancient Aliens, Oak Island, shows about cryptids, ghosts, the Bermuda Triangle, and basically any similar "THE TRUTH IS OUT THERE!!!!!!!!~!!" type shows.

Being a credulous idiot is bad. Believing stupid things because you watch crap shows and are incapable of doing your own research or thinking for yourself is bad. Allowing those shows to influence your worldview is bad. The mere existence of those shows causes a net negative effect on the collective IQ of the world - and there's barely enough IQ to go around as-is.

Stupid people suck.

You're gonna hate on Ancient Aliens? Really?

It's obvious that the Bermuda Triangle is nothing special as there is plenty of evidence showing otherwise (planes flying through it, being tracked inside it and not disappearing etc). Ancient Aliens...doesn't seem inaccurate to me. A lot of it is mostly just speculation though.

I mean I think part of the fun is wondering whether or not it could possibly be true at all. If it's just blatantly obvious that it isn't true (Bermuda Triangle), then no. I don't see why anyone would find that interesting otherwise.

Most reality tv imo. I watched Survivor occasionally when I was young, and the most recent thing I watched was Love is Blind (just the first season).

I think the problem is simply schadenfreude. Your entertainment and enjoyment is coming from a negative source. You're not a bad person for watching but if it's a heavy habit, I feel like that could warp your brain.

Anyway, 45 mins in Ancient Aliens rn, LOL I instantly recognized the guy with the goofy hair and suit from the memes.
PO was right though. Aliens visited the Ancient Egyptians and gave them advanced aircraft, are you kidding me. WTF is this?
Apparently there's a South Park episode making fun of this show and now I wanna see that.

Edit: season 15 episode 13 of South Park is what makes fun of Ancient Aliens, if anyone else is interested.

It's much different from the American version tbh. For example when all the couples meet each other in the American version for the first time they immediately hug and kiss each other. Pretty much none of the contestants in the Japanese version did that at all. A lot less drama too. The Japanese are respectful AF.

Ancient Aliens...doesn't seem inaccurate to me.

And that is precisely the problem.

Most of the time, if I see the show in passing, I will hear them present inaccurate or misleading information within the first minute or two of when I start listening. And when they're not straight up misrepresenting facts to support their distorted world-view, they're relying almost entirely on "weasel words" - phrases like "alien theorists suggest" or "is it possible that?" are used constantly (make it a drinking game and you'll be dead by the end of the show). Which is a rhetorical trick to suggest and imply things while still maintaining plausible deniability ("Well, I never said that, I just asked if it was possible ."). The show is almost entirely constructed from outright lies and deliberately false implications. The few true facts they actually include are usually only part of a framework to make a later lie seem more plausible.

The problem is that the average viewer doesn't have the skill, experience, or body of knowledge to parse out what is factual and what is complete and utter bullshit (ie, most of it), so are completely incapable of differentiating between truth and lies. Which means they'll generally accept what they're told at face value, because they lack the context to perceive the misinformation.

It's the same issue with "documentaries" which are heavily biased or deliberately manipulative - people hear the word "documentary" and assume what they're being told must be true, when it's either deliberately deceptive or inaccurate by virtue of incompetence. Which means they accept what they're told as being factual when it isn't. Which leads to them to construct worldviews and assumptions which are blatantly incorrect, which in turn can affect any number of possible decisions or choices they make in their future lives.

And science has proven that humans tend to believe the first things they hear on a given subject, and actively become resistant to facts that contradict those assumptions even when they're presented with definitive and objective proof that the first thing they learned was wrong. And attempting to disprove a mistaken assumption actually tends to make people believe those things even more .

In other words, shows like Ancient Aliens actively make people more ignorant. Because it's metaphorically building a shell around your brain that keeps facts and accurate history from getting in, while marinading your brain in nonsense that changes how you see the world and your place in it for the worse.

It's basically the social media of the TV world.

Bonus points where the central concept of the show revolves around perpetuating the idea that civilizations other than ours were primitive savages who couldn't possibly have figured out the things we have, which is an attitude that gets dangerously close to white supremacy at times.

Ok but let's be real. How much of it did you *actually* watch to jump to this conclusion? I won't doubt there's some bs but to claim it's all bs... especially when I'm guessing you probably haven't seen it all to judge it fully....just seems a little silly.

That does tie into what I said though. Sheldon himself is a pretty unlikable person, and if you don't like him that's fine. He's not always the focus despite being the namesake, and the rest of the show is all right; the characters and their dynamics, the plotlines, etc.

Possibly. But I know from trying -- and failing -- to get into BBT , that I can't seperate the rest of the cast from him when he's the central character. Oh well.

There's no such thing as a show that makes you a bad person for liking/watching.

This is all just media folks... It doesn't have that much sway over who you are as a person... Or at least it shouldnt
