Poll of the Day » Florida Teacher writes the N-WORD but she SWEARS it was an ACCIDENT!!!
Do you believe this teacher's story?

A FIRST Grade Heifer in Florida has caused outrage after she made a "typo" on a home assignment that spelled out a racial slur and then gave a pathetic apology for the "inconvenience"

It happened at Hamilton Elementary School in Sanford where she sent home an assignment that used the n-word instead of the word "bigger"

But when Terry Day's 6 y/o daughter, Rosa came home from school with it, she didn't know what to think and said "My daughter said to me, i know that word and i know what that word means, but is this supposed to be on my paper?"

She spoke with the teacher and wasn't impressed with the response and said "Well, you didn't spell check your word? You didn't proofread your word before you sent that out? And the teacher said, it is a word, and i didn't like the attitude behind that one"

The teacher explained that the "B" and "N" are right next to each other and she ACCIDENTALLY typed the latter when she meant to say bigger

A school spokesman, Michael Lawrence said "The district is aware of the unintentional and unfortunate mistake regarding the typo on the spelling words worksheet. The teacher involved has taught here for many eyars and is extremely remorseful about the situation. The school has already fixed and updated the spelling words and redistrubted to the students in that particular class"

The remorse however wasn't the reaction the teacher conveyed which she sent out a statement with "Dear Parents, please be advised there was a misspelled word on the blue spelling list i sent home yesterday. Please throw the blue list away and refer to this list for the next 6 weeks. I apologize for any inconvenience this may cause"

It didn't mention the word she misspelled and Terry was outraged who said "Inconvenience" means sorry for the obther. So i mean, it was not apologetic, it was not "sorry". Even when i met her in person, she wasn't sorry"

They don't want her punished as her daughter likes the teacher but felt an apology was due and was offended as she said racism is prevalent.

Given the context, it's unmistakably an accident.

The n and b keys are right next to each other. I suppose that's a relatively easy error to make, especially if you use your right hand to hit the b key. Not the proper way to type, no, but I'm not exactly perfect in the proper way to type, either. I don't know if I've ever touched the right shift key of my computer ^_^

It does not seem like the teacher handled this very well, though. Like she doesn't get the gravity of the word.
Who's your favorite character from "Bend It Like Beckham"? And you can't say Beckham.
The keys are next to each other and spellcheck isn't going to catch it because both are words. It's a simple mistake. People make them. Now, you should still own your mistakes and so the teacher could have handled this better. That's literally all the parent was asking for. Simultaneously, the parent probably didn't need to get so offended at what was, of course, a mistake.

considering the "victims" of the word use it more than anyone else, the gravity is already diminished greatly, doubly so when the mistake is so obvious

If this is the response from the school then no wonder the teacher made a spelling mistake.

I actually did this same thing the other day when I meant to type bigger in a text. I caught it before I sent the text though
I see nothing wrong with this.

yea the mom is being unreasonable. it was a typo and the teacher was mortified and already apologized. they are making it into a bigger thing than it really is. by saying in that quote that "racism is prevalent" it shows that the mom actually does think the teacher did it on purpose. that's why she won't drop it. but what's more realistic? a typo? or a teacher suddenly dropping the N word for no reason on a paper the whole class would see and knowing it would get her in trouble? I doubt the N word is even in context in what she wrote which just further proves it was a typo. if you are reading the sentence and it makes more sense if the word is bigger than the n word, than yea, it's a damn typo

If you're actually taking as much offense as you put on, perhaps it's you who doesn't get the gravity of the word.

As for the handling:

Sounds like she handled it perfectly. She explained the error and apologized. Judging from the reactions here, it sounds like people expected her to commit seppuku.

Once again they're giving racists even more power. As long as these words stir controversy, they'll continue being used as weapons. Shame to see people fall into the same trap over and over.
This sentence has five words. This sentence has eight words. Only one sentence in this signature is true.

The inconvenience was asking parents to throw away the homework. This is a perfectly fine reaction yet you want blood. If you're going to push pointless outrage, at least pick your battles better.

Not really. It's seems more like she just spelled one word ok a list wrong. Obviously, since it's an actual word, it wouldn't come up misspelled word. And it's easy to roll over one word accidentally while looking through the bunch.

Clearly you've never been to city council meetings in the deep south. One guy had to step down from public office for using the word "renege" in a speech (the outraged ignoramuses in his district who didn't know what the word actually meant thought it was a racial slur, and DEMANDED he be removed).

It's really believable as a mistake.

I can also understand the argument for the need to apologize for the mistake rather than just calling the dismissal of homework a mistake, but the demand for it? Especially as far as people are calling for it? Definitely seems overzealous. I get the impression that even if the teacher had apologized for it as people overtly expected, they would find another reason to be upset about it.

The teacher probably should've apologized a bit more directly, but given the situation, what was done really wasn't too bad. Unless you can prove she's a racist that did it on purpose and then reneged only because of the outcry, fuck off. Intent is very important in this sort of situation.
