For every else there's no wrong answer to how you might try to get to an area, but Mount Hylia only has one way to fight the cold. Cooking. And you have to wander around the mountain to even find a pot after you see spicy peppers in the log cabin. Plus it doesn't even have all the tutorials. You still have to find the battle tutorial after you leave the mountain.
Can you light a torch and use that for warmth? I can't remember.
You can get the coat from the old man though, although I know, I know, technically that requires cooking also.
