sequels can definitely *undermine* originals, simply by virtue of existing sometimes. but yeah when i think thats going to happen i just dont play the sequel. It can be difficult to ignore sequels when they surpass the originals in popularity. Good luck trying to reminisce about or introduce anyone to Baldur's Gate - this was possible a few years ago, but now Baldur's Gate is that game by Larian and the Bioware titles may as well not exist to anyone who hasn't played them by now. Before that there were a sizable number of people to whom Baldur's Gate = that PS2 action/RPG hybrid and trying to explain to them that Baldur's Gate is actually a completely different game was a futile endeavor. --- http://thecrankyhermit.shoutwiki.com Year-by-year analysis of the finest gaming has to offer, and (eventually) more! ... Dunno if they're really hot takes, but the Sequel Trilogy and Disney Star Wars in general ended my interest in anything new related to Star Wars, though to be fair, it had already started waning after New Jedi Order; they just fully killed my interest and I've never felt the desire to go back (though I do admit I like to sometimes browse subreddits like Maw Installation and read some in-depth discussions of PT/OT stuff). I heard Andor was actually really good, but after giving shows like Obi-Wan a shot (man, I hated that show, which was really frustrating because I love Obi-Wan), I didn't want to bother. Now that I think about it, literally the only post-Disney Star Wars merchandise I've bought have been a few of the Zahn books. The Legend of Korra did this to a lesser extent for me, too, though I will say Season 3 was amazing and salvaged it for me (though Season 4 was mediocre and the ending wasn't built up nearly well enough for me to like it). I'm still interested in seeing what the new series will be like, though, so it's not quite as bad for me as Star Wars. --- PTCGP Friend Code: 4495150926799691 (Goose) ... Copied to Clipboard!

Nah, they absolutely can. People aren't robots. "Just ignore it" doesn't just delete it from memory. If you're a really story-focused person, knowing the sequel takes the story in a really shitty direction can and will absolutely sour the experience for you, even if just a little. I see stories as a cohesive unit. I can't separate Chrono Trigger from Chrono Cross any more than I can separate the ending of Mass Effect 3 from the rest of Mass Effect 3. And for me, my absolute biggest pet peeve is when a sequel decides to completely throw out an earned happy ending just to be edgy. I hated when Dark Fate did it, I hated it when Chrono Cross did it, and I refuse to watch Scott Pilgrim Takes Off because dammit, they did it there, too. --- Doesn't take a lot of brains to be a good fighter. ... Im curious if Terminator will be nextI mean, we got Dark Fate which wasn't as good as the first two but was way better than the other sequels we've had. Isn't that basically the same as Alien: Romulus? I wouldn't put Predator in that category either. The first movie was very good but I wouldn't call it a masterpiece like the other two. ReturnOfDevsman posted... I guess that's at least a better perspective than I've seen before.I think ghe analogy holds. Irs about whether the experience itself is meant to be standalone or continuous. If a meal is designed to be enjoyed in three parts, as many often are, they can impact each other, and make each of them better or worse than the sum of their parts. On a small scale, it's easy to see this with wines, where they can often be paired with certain cheeses or desserts to enhance the flavor of both. On a bigger scale, restaurants often will design an appetizer-entree-desert structure, and they often curate those choices to make sure they all create a cohesive meal. I don't know what your tastes are but I'm sure you can imagine some food combinations that, when paired in that structure, woupd make the meal worse. And any single one of those three parts being outright bad may put you off your meal entirely. The three parts of the meal create the single experience. People like me view the entire story as that single experience, and each puplblished work in that story as the "course." And just like a bad entree might spoil an overall meal, a bad act 2 might spoil the overall story. If that's not how you see things, that's fine; plenty of people can go to red lobster and just enjoy the biscuits and leave it at that. Easy to argue it's the best part, anyway. Others, like me, intrinsically see the story as a continuous, collective, overarching piece, and there's nothing wrong with that, either. --- Doesn't take a lot of brains to be a good fighter. ...
