Board 8 > Mega Man X v. Mega Man Zero

Was gonna play through both, but a lot of the Xs haven't been hitting. If the only MMX I like wind up being 1 and maybe 4, is Zero even worth trying? Or is it just kinda more of the same?

Id say go for it. The Zero games are pretty different imo.

The Mega Man X series sucks; in my opinion, only X, X2, and X4 are any good at all. All of the Zero games are playable and I'd say are probably overall better.

The Mega Man Z series sucks; in my opinion, only Z2, Z3 and Z4 are only good at all. All of the X games are playable and I'd say are probably overall better.

Most people aren't that into the post-X4 MMX games, so maybe don't play those.

The MMZ games are pretty different. I didn't care for them at all, though I only played 1-3.

You can't fool me, not even the most ardent fan of the X series thinks every X game is playable

MMX 1, 2, and 3 are all more or less great.

The Z series is much more consistent, but only one of them really knocks it out of the park (Z3). It's pretty distinct from the X games as well.

X1-4 are all varying levels of good. X5 is decent. I couldn't finish X6, so I didn't even get to experience X7. I've heard X8 is decent though.

I've only played the first MMZ game and I liked it well enough. It felt different enough from MMX that it's still worth a shot even if you bounced off of the X series.

the Zero games are more DMC/character action game ish than like the classic/X games.

Getting high grades on level can be a pain if you try to get them.

Zero games are amazing, top tier 2D megaman easily.

I played X1-X4 and enjoyed all of them.

I tried Zero 2 and found it so incredibly difficult I stopped playing it.

That's about all I can say.

This. Like someone else said, they're 2D Devil May Cry. Get the Zero/ZX Collection and take advantage of the modernized save system.

I know you're mocking the poster above you, but there should be laws against suggesting that X7 is playable.

I played X1-X4 and enjoyed all of them.

I tried Zero 2 and found it so incredibly difficult I stopped playing it.

The DS collection added an easy mode if you ever want to try again (Id guess it got carried into Legacy as well but dont know for sure)

I didn't really get Zero when I first played it. Maybe I expected it to be more like MMX

I feel like I died but instead of getting to retry the level the game continued and I felt like I messed up

The modern consoles legacy collection has both an easy mode (which sort of drastically changes the experience because it just unlocks everything for you already) and a mode with substantially more save points in the stages (better way to play).

They have save states and rewind, too, so it's basically like playing on an emulator

Zero 1 is kinda rough, but Z2-Z4 are all great. I like Z2 the most of those

X1 and X4 are for sure the best games. I dunno I never really cared for X2 or X3? X2 is fine, but I don't think X3 is a good game. X5 is also fine, but the whole time limit thing makes it kinda weird to play through the first time. X6 and X7 are all time bad, but sometimes i feel X7 loops around to so bad it's good territory. X8 is a nice return to form and my 3rd favorite X game.

Secretly Command Mission is one of the best X games because it's just Final Fantasy X, but Mega Man X. That needs an HD remaster or something.

X1 to X4 is the best consecutive run of games in the Mega Man series.

7 was so bad I still have never played 8. Mind you I actually did finish 7, but it was possibly the worst game I have ever completed.

8 suffered for 7's sins.

As someone who played through the entire Zero series (And even S ranked the original), it's something I don't really see myself going back to. No form of MegaMan requires perfection more than the Zero series. Many things in Zero/ZX are locked behind your ranking or the way you kill the boss, so if you actually want everything, be prepared to do the stages many times over until you have them down.

You'll naturally have to do that with some of the bosses just to clear stages anyway. They have several times more life than you do and many require precise patterns of movements/attacks from you to fight against. This is especially bad in the first game, as you don't even get subtanks without permanently ruining your save file.

My greatest gaming achievement is probably beating Zero without any elves. Not as some sort of self imposed challenge, but just because I didn't bother learning what they did and thought they were just some sort of collectible.
I think it might have been my first 2D Mega Man game that I really played through and was just like 'damn yeah people always said Mega Man was hard I guess they weren't kidding'

Yeah, Zero 1 is definitely one of those games where you can easily miss out on things and not even realize it because the game never really explains anything to you
