Scissors. pulling the top apart can cause it to tear and split the bag down the sides. cutting with scissors make a nice crisp slice that isn't likely to split.

Maybe at first. But it seems to save on effort over the long term. Less geometry to navigate between you and the chips.

I carefully open it across the top, making sure not let it rip down the side. My girlfriend opens shit all willy nilly and doesn't care if she rips it down the side. So I make sure to open any bags that I plan to be eating from. It bugs me when they aren't opened neatly. I have a specific way that I fold and reseal the bag to keep the contents fresh and rips down the side make that difficult, if not impossible. I won't make a claim of O.C.D., I just have a very strong preference. >_>

Yeah, it's the smart thing to do and I'm surprised so many comments are saying they don't. They're probably also the type of people who reach into a Pringles canister instead of steadily pouring them out when the stack is lower.

Pull apart.

If it is the snack sized bags you'll eat for a meal, I pull apart, tear down one side, tear the bottom and use the bag as a makeshift plate.
