although, it could very well be something that I actually heard. Some chiptune song I might imagine as a shop or upgrade menu theme in an indie roguelite or something. Very punchy, sounds like people galumphing along. I have no way of being able to replicate it or search for it.

I'm constantly making music in my dreams, and the music is always really good. The couple times I managed to reproduce it, it actually came out really good.

A long time ago my sister had an old Nokia phone, and it has this surprisingly deep roguelike game that I used to play all the time. I don't remember the title and I've never seen it anywhere else since then, but the music for it is tattooed in my memory. I could replicate it perfectly right now if I wanted.

That's definitely the game that piqued my curiosity about roguelikes, since I hadn't heard of the genre before. Then several years later I blindly bought Izuna: Legend of the Unemployed Ninja on DS, and I was officially a fan of roguelikes/lites.

I haven't played Dragon Warrior for like 35 years, but I can still hum the overworld theme. Same with the original Donkey Kong, where I haven't played it for 40 years, but I can still hum the background music from the first board, and the song that played when you pick up the hammer.

On top of which, I'll occasionally hum the Final Fantasy victory fanfare music to myself if I've accomplished something relatively significant. In spite of the fact that I haven't played a Final Fantasy game at all since 2005 or so (and I'm mostly humming the fanfare from FFI/FFIV/FFVI, which, again, I haven't played for about 35-40 years).

This stuff carves deep grooves into the brain. I occasionally muse about just how much space in my memory is taken up by completely and utterly useless data like that. And if the fact that its in there is basically preventing me from learning other, more useful things. Like maybe this is why I never really learned how to speak French very well. Or why I suck at higher-level abstract math.

I like to believe the human brain has infinite "capacity". It just is really good at archiving, compressing and weaving connections. Which is why you can completely "forget" something until a trigger brings it back.

it's not infinite, but it's really really really big. It's estimated to be about 2.5 million gigs

I just went to clean something in my bathroom, and as I grabbed a bottle of Simple Green, I just spontaneously started singing Simple and Clean (Planitb mix).

All those people who say video games are bad for you were right. This is the sort of damage it causes! An irresistible and uncontrollable compulsion to sing video game soundtracks in inappropriate situations!

I do that shit all the time, too.

And when I'm making soup/stew/chili I always sing to myself "Do you have to let it simmer, do you have to, do you have to, do you have to let it simmeeeeeeer"
