Target will lay off 1,000 corporate employees and close 800 open roles affecting roughly 8% of its global corporate workforce the company said Thursday. The layoffs and changes set the course for our company to be stronger, faster and better positioned for the future, incoming Target CEO Michael Fiddelke said in an email to employees.

Fiddelke will take over from veteran CEO Brian Cornell next year, the company announced in August. The layoffs, which come ahead of the critical holiday shopping season, are the latest sign of struggles at the Minneapolis-based company. It has been been reeling from slumping sales and fierce blowback to its retreat on DEI programs. Its decision to end some of those initiatives angered supporters of diversity and inclusion policies, who felt blindsided. Target had staked out a reputation as a strong corporate supporter of DEI.

Target said its move weighed on sales, which have fallen for three straight quarters. Economic conditions and competition from Walmart, Amazon and Costco have also taken a toll on Target. Customers have shifted their buying patterns, purchasing less of the companys home goods and clothing. The companys (TGT) stock has dropped 30% in 2025, putting it among the worst-performing companies in the S&P 500 this year. A Target spokesperson said the company did not lay off employees to cut costs. Instead, it was a step to rewire its organization to make decisions more swiftly.

lmao

It's what they get. They basically went "BUAHAHAHA WE ACTUALLY HATED GAY PEOPLE ALL ALONG!" at the first possible opportunity and then everyone told them to fuck off. I'm just going to sit back and watch them continue to crash and burn.

(For what it's worth, though, I do feel bad for the employees. I just like seeing the shitty corporation go up in flames)

It is wild that corporations still expect the public to be this stupid in 2025then again, America did re-elect Trump so

But my wife and I did stop shopping there as much as we used to after they bent the knee and walked back their DEI policies.

How about they fire the CEO responsible for pissing off so many former customers?

Oh right, gotta pay for those golden parachutes.

Restructuring to be more agile is precisely laying off to cut costs and bolster your stock portfolio. God, Target is dumb.

The shopping experience at Target has gotten awful ever since they started focusing so hard on their shitty drive up service. There's never anyone around to get help and they barely have any registers open, even during busy hours.

I honestly thought they were bigger. I mean I know they aren't the juggernaut Wal-Mart is but I'm still surprised 1,000 people would be 8% of their workforce. So you're telling me they have 12,500 total people in the workforce? Without googling I simply can't believe that to be true. I must be missing something here.

Even if you take the 1,000 layoffs and the 800 open positions if they are combining these which I think they are that would be 1,800 positions and if that is 8% that would be 22,500 people. I still have to be missing something. I think even Kmart has over 22,500 employees and they are virtually all gone.

I have to be missing something obvious. Are they only talking about upper management when they say "corporate workforce"? That would make more sense.

Target had a more liberal costumer base to begin with and then bowing to the rights culture war nonsense just turned people off.

Yeah that is what I started to suspect. I mean I know what corporate means but I was influenced by the topic title. The article does in fact say corporate global workforce which is different than total workforce. And they are counting the 1,800 positions, not 1,000.

More believable now. Also it is refreshing to see a company that actually eliminates some of the upper tier positions rather than just the true workforce. Too many places are already top heavy with redundant management and too often they still end up cutting the workforce to save money which is so dumb.

I rather just go to Wal-Mart to be honest. Its not pretending to be anything but a poor and middle class "all-in-one" shopping destination. Its convenient and they have halfway decent groceries compared to what Target carries.
