Yeah I agree. One of my favorites that come to mind is the guy that stole a bridge several years back. Or the scuba guy swimming away after robbing that Disney restaurant in Florida recently.

Or they could take the pieces apart and probably make good money from selling the gems seperately. Those pieces have a buttload of gems on them.

Melting what they can down and recutting gems is likely the only way. Also as old as they are they probably have noticeable rough cuts. Im no expert though.

Yes, you could melt down the metal, and sell the gems separately; but if that's the plan why not just knock over a high street jeweler?

Seems more logical that this was theft to order by an extremely rich collector.

Not that illogical things don't happen of course.

There's no way someone would go through the effort of doing a museum heist just to destroy the pieces.

The most likely outcome is that the haul will go to some underworld figure who will enjoy the status they give him among his peers.

They will also get used for security in illegal deals, and eventually to bargain for a reduced sentence ('remember those crown jewels that were stolen? What if someone happened to know the location?).

That's what happens with stolen art anyway. There's no way they can be sold, either intact or taken apart. They would have been stolen to order.

I think the same, but to provide a counterpoint, I remembered the theft of the Jules Rimet trophy (original football World Cup).

Obviously worth far more than the gold it was made of, but still believed to have been melted down.

Sometimes thieves don't have a plan beyond the theft.

It's a common practice for stolen jewelery, especially high profile stuff like this. And they didn't go through much effort for their museum heist. There weren't any Mission Impossible level antics going on. No Hollywood style super thief/spy equipment. They climbed through a window, threatened some guards, took the items and walked out in under 10 minutes. They were only inside for 4 of those.

Damn. In the movies they have to go through underground tunnels and weave their way through lasers and shit to steal from museums. IRL just pull a big old basket lift up to the window and walk out in 7 minutes.
