Every single ghost story boils down to wind, shadows, or someones overactive imagination. No ghouls under the bed, no vampires in Transylvania, no swamp creature lurking behind the shed. Just people freaking themselves out for fun. Change my mind.

Partly that, and partly the natural human inclination to grift.

Personally I don't see any reasonable basis for believing in ghosts. It seems to be purely an emotional thing, like the hope for an afterlife or existence of the soul. So it doesn't seem unreasonable to me to dismiss the possibility unless/until there is some actual factuals.

For the record I wish I could believe in that stuff still. I used to be into Wicca until I realized that for me it was indeed just for fun. Wished I could have actually believed. I've also resorted to praying to "God" at certain desperate moments. It's impossible for me to believe.

As arrogant as it is to completely dismiss that people can fly with psychic powers if only they believe enough.

I mean there are videos of what people claim to be ghosts but since that shit can be staged or manipulated they wouldn't be taken as proof anyhow.

I don't believe in ghosts mind you.

This is misguided, in the same vein as the "prove a negative" fallacy that isn't actually a fallacy. It isn't always impossible to prove a negative, and burden of proof exists upon assertion. Internet forums really like to use burden of proof to implicitly assert an opposing statement while dodging burden of proof for themselves.

You'll note in the very quote you use that @sariana21 is not technically asserting that ghosts exist in the same way you are not technically asserting that they definitely do not.

Legends about monsters probably originated when human ancestors encountered huge animals (megafauna) like Megatherium, Megalania, the moa etc.

The stories were probably passed down to future generations as monsters all the way to the present day even though most of those huge animals are already extinct.

On the other hand, there have been at least three instances in my life that I cannot rationally explain.
First time I wasn't feeling well and had stayed home from school. I was in the family room laying on the couch watching The Price Is Right. (This was probably back around 1984) I looked up at the ceiling fan in the room and there was a small white figure about 2-3 inches tall that looked to be lifting each leg up and down rapidly, then it looked straight down at me, even though it had no visible facial features, and jumped up to the ceiling and simply disappeared.
The second time, I was living in an apartment with a roommate. My room was opposite the kitchen, and I had gotten up during the night to get something to drink. I turned the light off in the kitchen, so that the only light on was a nightlight in the living room beside my bedroom and opposite the kitchen. A ball of light suddenly appeared in front of my bedroom door, and swung in a downwards arc towards the living room, then stopped and did a 90 degree turn and sped at high speed directly towards the nightlight in the living room and vanished.
The third time, I was at work, alone in the backroom mopping, when I felt something like a fork gently poke me three times in the back on the right side. Several other people that work in that area also have had encounters with something.

That one, at least, could have a natural explanation in that you may have encountered ball lightning.
