Honestly, it's probably still a step up from her predecessors who believe the same but are part of the majority. At least this is a bit of a change. And definitely better then what the US has with Trump and the GOP that are even worse.

Might not happen now. Koumeitou just officially left coalition with the LDP over Takaichi (she is currently the head of LDP, not Prime Minister). They already didn't have enough seats together to elect her (it was assumed she would appeal to other right wing parties, likely center-right, to get enough votes) and now they have even less. Could still end up with her, could get someone else, or they could call a new election. Uncharted territory.

When is the election?

Depends on what you mean by election. If you mean when does the Diet vote on the next Prime Minister then it's currently the 21st (it was the 15th, but the LDP delayed it in hopes of securing a majority of votes before the actual election). If she doesn't get elected prime minister (which is looking likely) then the current PM stays on until April next year. It's possible they desolve the Diet and have an actual election, but the LDP has to know that's suicide (they will certainly lose even more seats). There's also the possibility the opposition center left and center right parties elect a PM (they have enough votes to do it), but this is pretty unlikely because their priorities are very divergent. The far right and far left parties don't have enough seats to be relevant for anything.

Hearing a lot of yammering about the Komeito not supporting the LDP over Takaichi being a 'China Hawk' now. People in some Japanese subreddits talking about a lettuce head run for Takaichi.

Yeah, I don't know too much, that's why I said I have seem a lot of yammering about that. Still would be interesting if there's a lettuce situation here though.

She's almost certainly going to be PM now because Ishin no Kai has sold out the opposition and agreed to vote for her as PM in exchange for vague promises to enact one of their pet policies (reduce Diet members by 10%). Hopefully the next election has their voters returning the favor. They aren't even planning to form a coalition government like Koumeitou did, just vote for her. They still need some more votes to get there, but the idea is that it is likely that some other random members will vote for her in the second round if no one defects during the first vote.

That said, once she becomes PM she could end up getting no confidence vote if Ishin no Kai realizes they got played (the members who aren't bought anyway). PMs rarely last long here and she will be starting out in a precarious position.

When Liz Truss was first voted PM, some deli ran a thing saying "who will last longer, Liz Truss or Lettuce" and then they just put a head of iceberg lettuce out on display and left it there.
