I'm part of the central planning committee for the No Kings 2 protest in my area. I was a lead organizer on the first one. The two experiences could not be more different. The conditions and demands that the city and the PD are putting on us are INSANE. They are telling us we need to have ALL of our 100+ volunteers to attend a De-escalation and safety training seminar on Zoom, that we need to hire a private security firm, that we need to pay for an ambulance to be on standby at the event (though the local ambulance agency graciously agreed to just donate that), and the PD is going to have dozens of uniformed officers onsite as well as we don't even know how many plainclothes officers mingling in the crowd.

They really are expecting the worst.

I mean, that's true, but at the same time, where I live is not a big city and is not an area that has seen much if any of politically motivated violent crime, by either side. I am in California. We have strong protections and safeguards from the worst of what the Trump regime is doing.

I went to a local university campus last week when their TPUSA chapter was having a huge Charlie Kirk memorial event in the university's performing arts center, to hand out leaflets outside about taking a critical look at TPUSA and how their actions and practices don't line up with their stated values. There were about a fucking dozen cop cars out in front in the loading/drop off zone, basically turning it into a motor pool. They had drones, they had a sniper on the roof. It was ridiculous. It was waaaaay over the top. And everyone on the central planning committee kind of feels the same way as to what the city is requiring for No Kings 2. They haven't been anywher NEAR this strict with the requirements at ANY of the prior big protests we've put on.

In an alternate timeline, the American public isnt completely brain dead and we have President Harris with a Democrat majority House and Senate. DOGE was never a thing. Bills are passing to make healthcare and education more affordable, there are no ridiculous tariffs, and people are able to buy homes. Illegal immigrants are being given a path to citizenship instead of being assaulted and deported. Life is good.

Thank you for taking the time to organize in your community. I'll be honest, I haven't gone to any protests. However, I do donate to a lot of different causes. Of course, I also vote "blue." I just don't feel safe going to any protests.

Thank you, but we only send out the volunteer recruitment call to vetted people on our volunteer lists. We've had nothing but good people so far, and there aren't actually any events or actions coming up between now and then that would be opportunities to drive more volunteer recruitment, i.e. tabling or community outreach or other protests.
